Yes, you will regret the gravel! I hate my gravel and want concrete! I do have some but I ran out of money and went with the gravel. I will be replacing it with concrete! Big mistake!! The weeds are ridiculous! They will grow between your concrete and gravel.

Wow! What a difference a year makes. When you replace the fence consider replacing the poles with metal. I replaced all my wood posts with metal and don’t regret it. There are brackets that clamp on the post that the panel attaches to. Y’all have accomplished so much this year.

Janie, your silkies probably won’t lay until they are at least 6 months old or older……and because egg laying is regulated by sunlight hours, you might not get eggs until spring. But don’t despair, it will happen and it will be worth it!! And of all of my chickens, my silkies have been the sweetest and most friendly.

You may want to reconsider the type of grass you would like to put in. I'm sure Monty is going to be using it to do his Poo and that is extremely hard to clean off of the longer grass and because of that it will smell and attract flys. A shorter lawn cleans much easier and mowing will remove the stuck on debris. I'm just saying...

To encourage egg laying for your chickens - make sure access to oyster shell, start transitioning them from your starter feed to layer feed. You can put a few fake ceramic eggs in your nesting boxes to (they look super real so mark with tiny dot so you don’t pick up by accident, my kids and I did that a few times)

Congratulations Janey and Jason on making it through the first year on your new property! A move is stressful enough without throwing in a landscape makeover. It’s great to see your still talking to each other and got Jason to come over to the “Green” side. (Gardening). Enjoy your successes and good luck with your future projects! Looking forward to you accomplishing some more of your plans!

In your secret shade garden where it’s more sunny you could put ivory halo dogwood shrubs on both sides of fountain. They have the white & green variegated leaves. They are so pretty! Another option could be a shorter sun loving grass. Then move the hostas to a more shadier location in that area.

This might help you buy time for your fence: I used 2 long metal spikes driven into the ground at an angle several feet in front of our fence posts where it leaned away. I had a helper pull the panel upright and then we attached 1/8-inch coated cable wire (airplane wire) and wrapped the wire around and behind the top of the two posts and the fence panel. Then we secured the wire to the spikes with a crimper that crushed down on the metal clamps and turnbuckles. It pulled the panels back into an upright position. I did that for every other panel that needed it.

Oh Janey! As much as I LOVE my Crepe Myrtle’s - keep in mind how messy they are. I imagine that would be perfectly fine in that spot for now, but if the plan is to eventually have a pool back there, you might regret putting them there. You’ve done a beautiful job with your property! You’ve made all those changes in just one year - a big hunk of that year you were down and out with your foot injury! Really impressive. Exciting to see what the next year will bring!

it's looking great!! Hey, for your water tank, you should do what Kevin from Epic Garden did and plant some Passion fruit vine - it will cover your entire tank with a little help of some trellising, the flowers are gorgeous, you get lots of delicious passion fruit, AND that's what Gulf Fritillary butterflies lay their eggs on so you'll be helping them as well!

Hi Janey! If you do Crepe Myrtle’s near your greenhouse, I’m not sure what you were planning for the sizing, may I suggest cultivars that won’t overhang the greenhouse- You would be cleaning it constantly as the crepe Myrtle’s can be pretty messy. ❤

It's probably too hot for the chickens to lay. they also stop in winter. next year should be better. the silkers are good layers and sitters. are little hen sat on all the other chickens eggs. I had americanas that layed the most beautiful colored eggs.they stopped laying when it got too hot, usually in august. Your gardens are coming along especially since your didn't improve your soil. Wow so pretty!

I have a little plan, update, saving for awaiting approval, cooler work weather, in that waiting time I changed my layout, to what will be much better, but in the planning months ago I didn’t see. So patience will pay off to perfection lol or close to it. Keep up the good work Janey and Jason and it’s ok to take a break girl!!! We will still be here!!

What an amazing change in just one year. You two are such hard workers! I would suggest you reconsider gravel around the raised beds; plant debris and soil will constantly be falling onto the gravel and needing to be cleaned off, where that all blends into the mulch. Then again, I suppose you need to consider fire concerns, so perhaps there's a non flammable organic mulch option.

The soil in our former vineyard is good, but hadn't been worked for a while. So, when we started planting, amending, mulching and watering there was an explosion of very aggressive weeds. Bind weed is the worst! We've spread acres of arborist wood chips but the weeds just keep coming. It doesn't seem to matter whether or not we layer cardboard first or how we water (overhead sprinklers, perforated drip tubes, targeted drip emitters, or no summer water at all.) So I really admire how weed-free your acre appears and wonder how you do it!?!. Your garden is looking great.
