Just so you know, there is a purpose for the Kansbol's compound grind. The front half of the blade is supposed to be better for food prep, while the scandi portion is meant to be used for bushcraft.

Seems like a sensible compromise for a camp knife, especially in combination with a small axe or hatchet, make some feathersticks with the scandi part, then slice some food with the tip portion.

Also easier in the sharpening point of view. With the Kansbols thinner portion you dont have to remove as much metal compared to the Garberg in shaping another bevel once the original has worn out.

Garberg is a mountain top in Dalarna, the county in Sweden where the town Mora is located (after which the company is named obviously). Eldris is a station along a ski trail outside Mora. Kansbol is a tiny village outside of Mora, it used to be a farm where people brought their cattle in the summers, but nowadays it's just summer houses. So yeah, pretty much an elf in lord of the rings.

Perhaps the chaps in Sweden could make a special US version, with names particularly suited for you market. Here are a few suggestions. In stead of Garberg (a place in Sweden) a more appropriate name could be " The Ultra-tac GTX annihilator pro. The stainless version could be the "Bald Eagle liberty edition" and the carbon version could be " Black-Ops Patriot Enforcer"

The grind of the Kansbol works wonderfully removing the backstraps and generally butchering medium and large game. I also like the light weight and feel in the hand making it easy to use and manipulate for prolonged work.

Here is how I view the Garberg: it's my main, multi purpose belt knife. It is rather light, even with the sheath it's very compact and both knife and sheath are pretty much impervious to to elements (water, rain, snow, heat cold,...). I put a Skandivex edge on my which is rather robust so it will handle pretty much everything I throw at it. So for me the Garberg is the one knife I will always have on me since it so light, compact, impervious and unobtrusive and it still is able to handle pretty much everything if done with thought. Of course I love my ESEE 6 but it is just too big and heavy and threatening looking to have on you all the time (JMHO, I like to be light and fast). Also I don't like the retention strap that comes with the multimount since it slides of to the side way to easily making it useless... So I added my own more traditional retention strap made with a snap, a rivet and some mil spec webbing. Great video, I very much agree on your point of the Garberg being one hell of a great deal.

Thanks for the review, Aaron. I personally preferred (and purchased) the Kansbol with the molle-compatible sheath system. I prefer the lighter weight (like you say, less than most folders) for hiking, and I love the compound grind for hunting/cooking/camp tasks. The thinner tip makes the knife superb for things like fileting fish, while still having the ability to do light batoning and carving. It didn't hurt that I caught a sale and got the whole package for $36.

I believe blade on the Kansbol is the same as the old Mora 2000. The knife is more of a camp, hunting and fishing knife than a typical Mora scandi for bushcraft tasks.

I was sharpening my Garberg yesterday and I was pondering my own long-term thoughts on it. I've been using it exclusively since the launch. My overall take is the same as yours - the Garberg is a great value, if you need the 'bombproof' version. The upgraded steel and full tang are worth the extra money for a knife that will be used for decades. The retention strap on the modular sheath can be accidentally bumped to the side, as mentioned by others. That's a design flaw I'm surprised Mora made. Otherwise, the modular sheath concept is great.

+John Campbell. Maybe the price is way different in the USA on these Garberg knives but over here they are around 100 euro so probably some 118 usd. For that money I have many other options. Even for half that money I have many other options. Is the Mora the new fashion thing in the USA??

While these two knives are without a doubt great quality blades, as all Mora's are, I see nothing that they will do better that the Mora Companion H.D. will do except for lightening up your wallet. I understand Mora's marketing strategy by trying to cash in on another group of outdoorsman that always has to have the "latest and greatest", but let's face it, people started buying Morakniv's for the VALUE they bring to the table. I ALWAYS have two Mora Companion H.D. knives in my pack. Not because I think one will break, but because over the years I have given so many away as gifts. I have seen that these knives stand up to every task a camper, prospector, or hunter could ask of them. I have never broken one, but then again I don't abuse ANY knife. From a VALUE standpoint, there is no better knife on the market today than the Mora Companion series. I buy knives to cut, chop, and slice, not for all the bells and whistles of a fancy sheath. With that being said, I know Mora has a LOT of great knives in their stable, I just hope they continue to produce the knives that any youngster can afford, and knives that guys like me are proud to give away to those just starting out in their outdoor journey.

I've been using a Companion for years as an all-around hunting and camping knife and I agree with your points about the value and versatility of the Companion. I've bought many as gifts as well, and both my kids carry them in their packs. The thing that is drawing me to the Garberg is the sheath (and better quality steel). I want something I can mount to PALS webbing on my packs/vests without fiddle-dinking around with some jerry-rigged contraption using the Companion sheath. Yes, I could buy a custom Kydex sheath for the Companion, but then I'm up into Garberg territory in terms of the total $ investment. That is my reason for considering the Garberg (still shopping).

I love my companion HD but I also have to Mora 2000 (same blade as the Kansbol but with a slightly different handle, I bought it because it’s sheath is ambidextrous and I’m a lefty) - and I love the extra length of the 2009/Kansbol. My only complaint with my companion HD is it’s a little bit short for my liking/food prep around camp, etc.

Great review, I'm still not quite sure how you don't have more subscribers; your reviews are at the top of the line. When I see a knife I like, the first thing I do is check KZbin to see if you have made a video on it. Also, are you planning on getting your hands on that new "Tactical Sliver" Gerber Strongarm? I've never heard of the new steel being used (BDZ-1), but the silver handle and stuff looks sick.

Finally a commentator with knowledge about the intended use of a knife. I see all this stupid huge channels with ignorant fat couch potatoes batoning Helle knives and calling them poor quality because they broke them while batoning. The knife they broke was the Viking knife made by Helle. It's a replica of a knife found in the grave of a Viking warrior from the 10th-11th century. I am sure Viking carry axes for the job but this assholes just want to hammer the shit out of a piece of history. Thank your for your review I enjoyed it and will be getting my first Mora soon and your review helped with my decision.

Actually, there is a very good reason for the Garberg's full tang contruction: Because people kept asking for a full tang Mora. Plus it competes with other similar knives (full tang, molded handle, ~4'' blade) like the Fällkniven F1, Cold Steel Master Hunter, Steel Will Druid series, Terävä Jääkäripuukko, Linder Super Edge 1&2 and many more. Having just that slightly angled part of the front grip instead of a pronounced finger guard the Garberg also brings a different flavor to those knives. It's like the bigger brother of the legendary Mora 510. After the price came down from >120 EUR to ~70 EUR there is not much to complain about the Garberg anymore. Would I chose it over a Terävä Jääkäripuukko? No, not at all. Those are my preferred choice for hard tasks. But the Garberg is a nice secondary blade or camp knife between your big main knife (BK7/9, Terävä Skrama) and the small blade for fine tasks (Mora 510/511, Companion or a folding knife). I think the 3.2mm blade thickness puts the Garberg in a nice spot between thinner Companions and those overbuilt chunks of metal like the BK2 or F1. It is a nice alternative to typical Bushcraft knife designs like the Spyderco Bushcraft, Real Steel Bushcraft or Condor Bushlore. The cool thing about knives is you don't have to pick just one. You can have as many of them as you can afford. I would not pick the Garberg as my only knife if I had to chose one. But I find myself throwing it into my pack quite often.

I removed the leather loop from my Kansbol and replaced it with a belt clip. The knife, sheath and firestarter kit are so light I can clip it onto sweatpants or swim trunks no problems. I prefer my camp knife to have a clip so I can add or remove it when sitting or sleeping.

I just received my first Mora Garberg... This knife is EPIC !!! Build quality is superior. The one thing I really like about this knife that no other knife has is that it has a short drop at the point allowing this knife to be extra strong. Other knife makers tend to make a false blade on top in taper it an inch back. This knife does not. The taper is less than 5 mm, which gives the knife a whole lot of strength up front. For 70 bucks this is the best knife there is... Morakniv needs to make a longer knife blade with five to six millimeter thickness on the spine. Like a Morakniv Garberg Pro+ Series.

I love my Terävä Jääkäripuukkos - all of them. Still, I also own a Mora Garberg and find myself quite often using it as a secondary knife for those tasks the JP 140 is a little too big and my smaller camp knife (Companion, 510/511 or folding knife) is a little too "weak" for. Just like all the other 4'' full tang Bushcraft knives (Condor Bushlore, Real Steel Bushcraft, Spyderco Bushcraft).

However, I have both and definitely prefer the Garberg for wood/campcraft, etc. I'd use my Companion over the Kansbol for food prep. I am definitely amazed at the Kansbol advocates out there, but many people like thinner blades. My mind always considers the "what-if" scenario. If they didn't change the grind in the Kansbol then you have the Companion with a different sheath. As for the sheath retention on the Garberg the belt carry option seems good but after using it for 5 days in the Boundary Waters it lost a lot of retention. I love the knife itself but now the belt carry option is pretty much gone for me unless I get a different sheath.

@NorseAlpine 7 жыл бұрын
Doug Lloyd You can add your own retention strap to the belt loop or just simply put some tape inside the sheath over the two knobs holding onto the knife.

Say Heah Aaron, no comparison, two different knives, Yup, I have both. The Garberg I use in a Basic Trio, or with my Buffalo Black Horn M-43 H. I. Khukuri or my Bokor Aparro Hollow Handle Survival Knife. The Kansbol I permimently attached it to my Fox Parang Bushcraft Jungle Knife, A lovely piece of kit, Yup a much lighter combo, but the two really compliment eachother. Infact I even sometimes use my Eldris as a Neck Knife. I feel fortunate to own both, But if I was only able to choose one, The Garberg is hands down my choice. I find the Kansbol and the Mora 2000 to be very similar, only different handles, But the Garber has a better steel and more of a perfect Bushcraft Knife. Dilly, Dilly, ( I stole the Dilly, Dilly from a Budweiser commercial), heh heh heh.,,.p

I'll take the kansbol over the garberg any day . The thin design is meant for skinning and gutting, the thicker side is meant for bushcraftimg. I love the plastic sheath with mora no maintenance required , with leather you have to maintain and the plastic sheath has two drain holes, it's a no brainer. Kansbol rules in my opinion. In less your your planning on using the back of your knife to hammer on, who the hell needs who full tang knife

I'm not sure why some people think you're supposed to be able to chop down trees and baton huge logs with a "survival knife". A knife doesn't have to be huge to be able to survive and emergency type situation with it.

Golly, I wonder if that goofy part of the blade has a purpose. Too bad Mora doesn't have a website otherwise we could have learned more about why they made it. And those goofy names! Must be a goofy marketing ploy too! So Swedish!

Why didn't you show/mention that with the gansbol the upper end/tip of the blade is quite thin, so when you use it for prying, it bends waaaaaaaaaay too easily , which is damn annoying. That's what I hate about that knife

They retain perfectly..... for be about 5 minutes. LOL OK, a bit sarcastic, but essentially true. If you use the knife frequently, the sheath will stop retaining the knife. You can turn the sheath upside down, and the knife will fall out. For the price, they're about the best knives around. I don't mind the sheath, either. But, those who criticize it are not (ALL) being knife snobs. Their criticisms are valid.
@Minsang1st
@Minsang1st 3 жыл бұрын
@@shadowx8405 lol I agree. They’re functional, but they surely lose their retention pretty fast after you use it a few times. You either have to use heat and reshape the sheath regularly or get a new sheath that’ll properly keep the knife in.

There jas been no change in retention that I have perceived at all and I always carry it horizontal on my belt.

Garberg One of these ‘fäbodar’ is called Garberg. It originally belonged to the village outside of Mora where our factory’s located today and all our knives are made. Garberg lies at the shore of a large lake, created by a nearby hydroelectric dam in the great river of Dalarna. Here, people have been working hard for centuries, facing the challenges of nature and the demanding self-sufficient life. To name our full tang knife Garberg after the place and the people who lived there is our way of paying tribute to our roots. Our ancestors and the surroundings of Mora are all parts of who we at Morakniv are today. The Garberg knife - the proud, strong and hard working tool that gladly faces every challenge - is our interpretation of the life once lived at the ’fäbod’ of Garberg

Think I'm with the Kansbol. Light weight yet performs way above what you would expect. It's a solid all rounder and it looks less conspicuous. It looks like what it is, a Bushcraft or camping knife. No skulls, no zombie guts, no glass breaker or bottle opener in sight. Not going to frighten the neighbours with this (unless you're doing something stupid). Plus what I love about mora is that it's not chinese mystery steel yet still at an affordable price. The edge is also wickedly sharp, I'd say easily amongst the sharpest knives I own.

Greatest feature of the Kansbol - it is ridiculously light weight! I have smaller knives that way 3 to 4 times as much! It is not small. It's extremely handy for carving and food prep, also works excellent with a ferro rod. AND - even if you have a "do it all" knife, I always have one attached to my GHB for in case you have somebody with you can use a good knife and because of the almost non-existing weight there is no excuse not to have it with you.

Moras sheaths are awesome and the kansbol is a fantastic design. I’m guess this guy doesn’t do much hunting because the grind at the tip is designed to make processing game easier. And then the blade transitions to a scandi grind for carving firemaking etc

As a lot of you already claims the Kansbol shares the blade shape with the older model Mora 2000. From what I heard, back in the day Norway was a big export market for Mora. The Norwegians love outdoor life and wanted a blade for making sandwiches. So the odd shape of the front is made for the purpose of being a butter knife.

Just my thoughts. I have about 10 Mora's and I love them. But the scandi grind is no good for food prep. Can't slice thin meat and vegetables. I thought that is why the konsbol put the flat grind on the tip, for food. But I have not heard that from anyone.

The Garberg is amazing. The sheath is out of this world in terms of function. I personally love the full tang. It’ll definitely be more durable than a partial when batoning over the long term. You also get the pommel on the back and at this point, you can get one for under $80 bucks. Cannot beat it. It will be the next one I get. No doubt. I already have an Enzo trapper which I use all the time and a mora black but no stainless steel blades for wetter conditions, this is the best choice. Bar none. Love your content! Keep posting stuff dude!
