Hi,
It’s rather shocking to realise that it’s a year since I bought my Astrohaus Freewrite. At the time, it was a temptation because I had been writing plenty on it, but how do I feel about it now, a year later?
Now - if you think you would like one, you can get a discount of 5% from the purchase of your Freewrite or Traveller. Just hit the link here: getfreewrite.com/?rstr=MJecks When you go from there to the payment page, you should see the discount applied. Apparently I’ll get a small sum, which will help keep this channel going as well!
If you enjoy my videos and would like to support the channel so that I can buy more inks and other items to review, please join my Patreon project at / mj150520 - you’ll also find more films and blogs about writing, about my work, even about my dogs!
Disclaimer - I bought this machine with my own money!
Don’t forget: if you have your own specific ideas for videos, do please leave them in the comments section below, or message me on one of the links. I'm often on Twitter and the other social media, so you should be able to track me down!

I just bought the limited edition Hemingwrite and it’s absolutely beautiful, including the leather case. Retro 50’s and very inspiring, I’ve increased my daily word count 2,5 times. Prior to this I used the Traveler and find the cursor keys a distraction. Writing forward for first draft is essential and rewrite in the edit. But get it on paper. I love my Hemingwrite and it travels well to. Thanks for your videos, keep it up.

Thanks for sharing that, Tom. I am particularly glad because you have confirmed my own impressions, having used my Freewrite for years, and having tested and tried the Traveller. It's a nice little machine, and a good package, but the Freewrite is a different level completely.

Yes - and every author before about 1900 did too. Nowadays it's rare, though, with only a few like Neil Gaiman using a fountain pen for all his writing. Cheers, Cap'n, and happy reading!

@@writerlywitterings Actually, I have a comment on the video's subject matter, and that's the Freewrite itself. Believe it or not, it's a fairly inferior device especially for the price they're charging. Before the Freewrite there was the AlphaSmart Neo2 which could do everything the Freewrite could, but better and with expanded functionality (such as spellcheck). And before even that, there was the Word Processor that started the trend in the first place: the Tandy WP-2! I'd say that this market needs more competition, because it's outrageous that Astrohaus is charging such prices for such an inferior device.
@writerlywitterings
@writerlywitterings 3 жыл бұрын
@@SergeantExtreme Interesting that you say that. However I would hazard a guess that you haven't used a Freewrite and compared it with the Tandy or Alphasmart. The Freewrite is greatly superior to the devices you mention - I've used them all and this is simply brilliant. Let's just make the point again: I don't get paid for my videos, and this wasn't a free gift. I had it on trial for two weeks. I extended that to four weeks so that I could review it fairly, and after three I bought it from Astrohaus. With my income I wouldn't do that unless there was a significant benefit. This gives major benefits. This is not a machine intended for the general market. It is specifically aimed at professional writers. That's why it has the keyboard it has with individually sprung keys. And it's also why there is no editing. The writer is forced to continue writing without interruption. However, the ergonomics are what make it fly for me. The screen, the keyboard, the machine's weight as it sits on your lap - all of them make it perfect for professional writers, perfect no matter whether you're typing on a table, desk, or out and about on your lap. This is a premium quality machine for extended periods of typing. The Aphasmarts and Tandys are not in the same league. Typing on them was frankly horrible - as was typing on my Apple MacBook Air. A lovely machine, but awful for typing. Now, you could say that the Freewrite is too expensive because other devices do more. Many people say that. Some point out that the average phone will edit; others that for only double to triple the money you could buy a laptop with lots of software. Yes, you could, and you would miss the whole point of the Freewrite. It is built from the ground up, software and hardware, to be the best writing experience for professional writers who want to create. It won't suit everyone. Neil Gaiman wouldn't look at it - because he creates and writes all his books using fountain pens - but that doesn't detract from the Freewrite's advantages for its target market. As to competition - it's not exactly a huge market. There aren't all that many professional writers. However the Freewrite has to survive in a market that is awash with pcs, laptops, Chrome machines - and pens and paper. It has pretty much recreated the idea of a specialist's typing machine for creative writers. And I'm not selling mine. However, I am selling my MacBook Air!

@@writerlywitterings "However I would hazard a guess that you haven't used a Freewrite..." Correct. I'll admit I've never used a Freewrite. However, I do own an Alphasmart. "That's why it has the keyboard it has with individually sprung keys." Oh, you don't have to tell me! I'm currently typing this comment on a Unicomp Model M Classic buckling spring keyboard! The one thing I'll admit they did right was the Cherry Browns. "And it's also why there is no editing. The writer is forced to continue writing without interruption." This is both a pro and a con. Many writers actually view this as a con. You're video is actually the first one on KZbin that I've seen that views this as a pro (most other reviews of the Freewrite view the lack of the ability to even scroll up and look at previous text quite negatively). I personally find this to be a con, but that's just my opinion. "Now, you could say that the Freewrite is too expensive because...." I mean, it is too expensive, and not just because other devices do more; but because it is indeed severely overpriced! Might I point out that the Tandy WP-2 was made entirely in Japan, and the Alphasmart Neo2 was made in the USA (of 75% US components no less!). The fact that they were able to manufacture the device here in America (the majority of it being US made parts) yet still costing less than the Freewrite shows you just how overpriced the Freewrite really is! I'm guessing $60 to make, so a 10x markup. That's crazy! "However the Freewrite has to survive in a market that is awash with pcs, laptops, Chrome machines" Ironic given the price they are charging. In conclusion, I fully understand WHY you like this device. I really do: convenient, portable, distraction free typing. You could literally drive out to a park, and bang out a novel under the shade of an oak tree, and that's fantastic. However, it just has too many shortcomings to justify that outrageous price!
@writerlywitterings
@writerlywitterings 3 жыл бұрын
@@SergeantExtreme Again, I don't think the price is outrageous, but that's entirely subjective. The fact that it does precisely what I want is the reason why. You mention the lack of editing and add "the lack of ability to even scroll up and look at previous text" as a con. If it was true, it would be a con. But you can page up and page down to view your work. You aren't permanently stuck on the next line. You cannot edit past text, but you certainly can go back and reread what you've already typed. I do it all the time. As to the cost of production - I have no idea how much it costs to make. In the same way, I am very sure that any Apple is sold with a very high markup. It's the way of things - people charge what they think they can get away with. Which is why when Dr Wang was supposedly told he could make a 100% profit on the first Wang Wordprocessors if he charged them at $1,500, his engineering and design manager burst out in a rage, saying they could charge $25,000 for the system. They did and Dr Wang became even richer. I don't care about the cost. Of course I'd love things to be cheaper, but the fact that this does the job I want makes it worthwhile. The keyboard, the size, the weight, the balance, the screen, all make this infinitely better for me than any of the competition, and a huge amount better than an Alphasmart or other lightweight devices. They may well suit people who only want the lightest device. The benefits of the Freewrite, for me, far outweigh such considerations. It's a machine for specific purpose. It achieves that purpose perfectly. It won't suit everyone. It won't even suit the majority of writers who have grown up with word processors, or those who feel multi-tasking machines are more suitable for them. But this video is all about my impressions and my feelings about the machine. For me it's perfect.

if you don't like the keys on a traditional laptop, you could always just buy a mechanical keyboard with the same switches as the freewrite! on top of that, you can get the same 60% form factor (qwerty layout + top num row) and should you ever want to change the feel of the keys, you have the option to do so as well (should you build one yourself, which is pretty easy, i promise!). i personally love my mechanical keyboard and love typing, but its a shame that i never have any ideas to write about lol!
@writerlywitterings
@writerlywitterings 5 жыл бұрын
This is quite true - but my immediate thoughts are: - I'd have to learn some new skills to put the keyboard together; - it would almost certainly work out to be more expensive than buying a new Filco; - it would cost me a lot more as a project because I would have to buy a laptop, which is a great deal more expensive than the Freewrite; - when I went out and about, I would have to carry an external keyboard and laptop instead of one device; - I would not be able to type on my lap (my lap ain't big enough for a laptop and a separate keyboard; - I would have the distractions of a full computer again, so wouldn't be so productive! So, all things considered, it wouldn't work as an approach compared with my buying the Freewrite! Thanks for the thoughts, though. It's really interesting to see people's views on the Freewrite. Most seem to think it's just a yuppy toy - but my own experience proves it's a brilliant tool for professional writers: much lower cost than any alternative laptop computer system, and much more effective for those who write large amounts.

Thank you for another great video about the Freewrite. Mine hasnt' arrived yet but as I wait and wonder if I made the right decision, you're helping me answer that question. Your reasons for disliking a laptop for writing are exactly the same as mine, and you answered another question I had - tired eyes as they relate to the Freewrite. I ordered one with the hope that the e-paper screen would provide some relief in that department, which you've described nicely. We appear to be about the same age, and I don't know about you but that whole "tired eyes" thing is relatively new to me, compared to the first 35 or 40 years of my life. Looking forward to my Freewrite getting here!

Hi, Tusk - yes, I get tired eyes a lot while sitting at the iMac, but the e-ink feels much more restful. However that could just be psychosomatic due to the lack of distraction. It is only letters on a white background, after all, so it's easy from that point of view - no variable fonts or anything. Anyway, as you can see, I love it!

I'm here in New Zealand and typing this on my Apple. All I can say is, I wish it was the Freewrite. The ergonomics are infinitely better, the screen too, and the Freewrite allows me to type at twice the speed of any laptop. The keyboard is superb, the fact that it's one unit means I can type extensively for long periods on my lap, on a plane and on trains. A hacked tablet with a separate keyboard would be impossible in any of those conditions!

Great review of a very interesting device. You are spot on when you say most modern laptops, especially given their chiclet keyboards and glarey screens are not really suited for writing. I can see the real benefits of the Astrohaus, especially given its superior keyboard and screen, in getting that first draft out - and if you can write 3,000 words on a train journey - well the proof is in the pudding! It is interesting to ponder longhand v astrohaus / laptop tools in getting that first draft out. The old pen and paper is super convenient and has a lovely feel to it, with its slower rhythm enforcing a more disciplined style of writing. On the flip side, I can type much faster than I can write freehand, so I'm inclined to think typing on a device is much more conducive to the creative process - if I can find the right device! The search continues......
@writerlywitterings
@writerlywitterings 2 жыл бұрын
That's the same conclusion I was forced to - I tried - I really, really tried - to write longhand, but it was so slow compared to typing. And then, at the end of the day, I didn't know how I was progressing. With the computer, it'll tell me when I hit 5,000 words, for example. But when handwriting, I wouldn't know whether I had written 200 words per page or more - or fewer. In the end, it cost me a book in a year when I really couldn't afford not to be productive. On the other hand, the Astrohaus has really increased my typing, and in an hour I can get a lot of words down, just because of the lack of interruptions.

Thank you for this video! Always nice to have a year after review when the honeymoon phase wares off and any issues actually show up. This seems like a great device for the type of writing I need to do. I enjoy writing with fountain pen, but its much slower than typing. Typing is great for when I get into that "flow" state - unless there are distractions. Question: Is there lag between keystroke and when the letter shows up on screen? I've seen this as a complaint with the freewrite traveler... haven't been able to deduce yet if that is an issue with the gen 3. While seemingly not a big deal for some that lag would drive me nuts.
@writerlywitterings
@writerlywitterings Жыл бұрын
There can be a small lag, yes. But ... well, what does that matter is my view. I type faster on the Freewrite (still using it and was demonstrating it to a friend yesterday), and my typing speed is not related to how quickly the words actually appear, it's much more due to the keyboard, the ergonomics of the machine's design, and the lack of any distraction. The keyboard is just wonderful. I don't know anyone (including my 18 year old son) who would move from this type of keyboard to a flat laptop type. It's just infinitely better. Second, the fact that it'll sit on your lap solidly, without rocking or moving, makes it a true "laptop". Not other "laptop" comes close, because they are inherently unstable due to the weight of the screen. Finally the lack of distraction is ... mind bogglingly good. Would I say you can ditch all other computers to get a Freewrite? No. You still need a decent machine with Word, Nisus Writer or Scrivener for edits and final copy. However I find (and it is a personal thing) that the Freewrite is the best device for when I'm travelling (word count on my old Apple MacBook was 300-500 words on the train to London; Freewrite was 3,500 words), when I'm stuck in a blocked story (I pick up the Freewrite and go and sit somewhere else, which always frees up my mind); when I just want to have a different perspective, or to start a new story. The Freewrite is ideal. As to the time lag - it's the speed, I think, of an e-ink screen. It takes a moment for the crystals to align with the electrical current. Yes, occasionally there is a minor delay, but you're looking at fractions of a second, and I find that's actually a benefit - yes, sounds daft - but when you're typing a new scene, it's those moments of pause that allow the story to solidify in your mind, rather than being some kind of problem that slows you down. Hope that helps!

If the Freewrite had been an Alphasmart Neo with e-ink that could be accessed as a USB storage device, it would have been amazing. What about a Raspberry Pi system without graphics for distraction free writing? Vim will let you edit, but encourages forward motion, and you can split the screen into 2 or more regions, each looking at the same file, different files, or any combination. You can further create tabs, each one a separate collection of regions with separate views of one or more files. The keyboard would, of course, need to be comparable. Great video and insights. I subscribed!

@writerlywitterings 3 жыл бұрын
Cheers, Johnny, and thanks for the comments. Well, if the Alphasmart Neo had an e-ink screen, working keyboard, and could be used as a USB storage device, as well has being more solid and built from metal - it would have been a Freewrite! There are lots of cheaper options, of course. Raspberry Pi would work with Vim - but then you're getting away from the freedom to work distraction free. I wouldn't want to edit on such a device, for example. I wouldn't want tabs and the ability to view different files simultaneously - that would take away from the key aspect of being able to just type without distraction or interruption. Several people have commented that I could have got a separate keyboard and a tablet for less money than the Freewrite, but it is the fact that it is robust, weighty enough to sit solidly on my lap, and has everything in the one cabinet that makes it such a brilliant tool for writers. Yes, there are always going to be cheaper options, but I don't want cheap necessarily. Lewis Hamilton could easily find a cheaper car to race in, but he wants something more designed for him as a professional! As a professional writer, I work on the same premise.

With 30 hours of battery and convenient to carry around I thought it would be wonderful for my OS trip. What a pity that that has come and gone. As has every other promised delivery date. Hi, Emma, and I'm really sorry to hear about your problems. I have had no issues with my Freewrite - but I was promised a Traveller to test and review, and it never appeared. Looks like it may be something to do with manufacturing, then. I'm sorry sorry to hear that you've had difficulty, though. I love mine, and I'm just about to go and reuse it now. One thing I would suggest (hesitantly) is under UK law, if they don't supply within a time-frame you can claim your money back. The law is particularly strong on purchases over the internet, and credit card companies are hot on complaints too. If you bought from a credit card company, you may have a form of redress? I find Pomera DM30 with E-Ink is great portable device for those who use Latin fonts (check the reviews though because the English keyborad is a bit different from standard). Sadly it does not support Cyrillic which is crucial for me. So I use it occasionally for writing texts in english. I also managed to use portable BT keyboard with Onyx boox for writing.

I know what you mean about using laptops, not that I'm a writer by any means, but I do write articles for my website and for KZbin. I didn't know about this product, so thanks for the great review. My own solution last year to find something that would allow me to write creatively without the lure of the internet was to purchase a 1996 Sharp FW-750 Font Writer word processor from off a certain auction site. It's portable in the sense that you can dump it onto a table, but it's mains powered and pretty hefty in weight. The screen isn't great and the response is slow, but it was the keyboard and lack of distraction when using it that attracted me. I have to save to a floppy disc, then transfer it to my PC with a USB floppy drive for final polishing but it works well! I do suspect the neighbours seeing me bashing away at it out in the garden on a sunny day may think I'm a bit nuts though. A situation that may remain should I invest in one of these perhaps?

That is exactly why the Freewrite is such a brilliant tool. No distractions, no internet, just the chance to sit and type on a superb keyboard. I'd certainly recommend them to serious writers or those like you who need the opportunity to write without interruptions. Especially since the e-ink screen works really well even in the sun!

@@writerlywitterings The only thing I don't like is the idea of having to log in to a cloud service in order to delete files. Another option would be a "U.S.B typewriter " There is a company that takes classic typewriters made in the 20"s to the 60"s and conjoins the with a tablet or a monitor. This allows you to type and get a hard paper copy of your work and a digital copy all at the same time.

Very true, so long as you only want to have a device at home. The benefit of the Freewrite is that you can take it out and about (as I just did when flying to New Zealand). Owing to the fact that it's all in one unit, it's easy to use on a park bench, on a train or in an aircraft. It's ... well, I've never found a better typing machine.

Hello! There is a lot of great information in this video! My only question is when you mention writing on the train and how this enabled you to write more words/hr. Does this device enable you to do that because of the physical properties of the keyboard or is it because there are few distractions? Thank you!
@writerlywitterings
@writerlywitterings 4 жыл бұрын
There are a number of reasons: First - the Freewrite is MUCH more stable. Laptops tend to be top heavy because of their glass, and will want to unbalance and topple over. The Freewrite is solid and stays put because of its low centre of gravity. I may be wrong, but it feels like that, and it gives the confidence that you don't have to worry about the damn thing falling over even when you plonk the Freewrite on your lap. Laptops would want to fall - these things don't! Second - there are no interruptions. No emails, thoughts of, "Oh, I should just check that on the internet" or other distractions. Basically it's there in front of you, and you can concentrate on typing. Third - the keyboard is just ridiculously superb. It makes you want to keep on going as soon as you start. The little flat keyboards you get on laptops just don't work for me. They feel cheap and in accurate. A keyboard with individually sprung keys is infinitely better - in my opinion! Hope that helps.

Oh, I wanted to mention also, a lot of critics of the Freewrite complain about the price, and that you can get a Neo2 off eBay for $30 or less (I actually paid about $15 for one in very good condition) and accomplish essentially the same goal. I haven't used a Freewrite as yet, but I have used mechanical keyboards with the same switches, and I can tell you that the Neo2, while quite a bargain for the price, can't come close to the feel a full mechanical keyboard. Yes, it's better than a modern laptop (partcularly the Macs, sheesh what a garbage keyboard in such an otherwise wonderful device), but the Neo2 is still just a moderately decent quality laptop keyboard from 10 years ago when they were actually quasi-mechanical. Still, if you're a writer and you can't possibly afford a Freewrite, the Neo2 is indeed a bargain alternative to solve the distracted writing problem laptops present.
@writerlywitterings

Thanks for confirming that. I'm like you. A real keyboard with keys that are individually sprung is infinitely better for someone who is going to type a lot. I did try a Neo once at a conference and the keys were truly horrible, as you'd expect for the price, but the device was also unpleasant to use because it didn't sit happily on my lap - but that's a personal issue, probably. There are certainly many people out there who really love their Neos and other machines of that type.

I know writers who don't understand the "distracted writing" thing, they apparently have the ability to simply turn off all distractions and use their laptop. I dig that the Traveler is so compact and easy to tote around, but will it be as comfortable as you claim the Freewrite is? I think the thing for you to do is wait for the clamshell Traveller to arrive and see how you get on. I'm a firm believer that often, getting something - anything - is a lot better than not. It may be that the Freewrite would be a little better for you, but if you never try it, you'll never need to compare the Traveller with it. So get the Traveller, and see how you get on. If you find that it isn't as comfortable as you'd like, perhaps get onto the Freewrite discussion forums and see if there's someone living not too far from you who would meet you in a coffee bar to swap machines and see what you think? The Traveller does look like a superb design that will help a lot of people with their writing. I just don't think it's quite the right tool for me.

If you are do you know whether yours is the Gen1, Gen2, or Gen3 unit and what are the differences betwen them? Does the unit show up as a USB drive if you plug ito into a Mac, as opposed to a PC? How do you actually go back to a previous document to add to or edit it if it just loads up the most recent document when you switch it on? Thanks!

Hi, Pedal - Sorry to take so long to respond - ill health and deadlines! Yes, still using it, and loving it as a tool for drafting. Mine is a Gen 2, which had a slightly larger battery, I think, but apart from that was pretty much identical to the Gen 1. The Gen 3 had upgraded software that allowed things such as ASWD cursor control. I've used that - and personally I think it's not worth the effort. Easier to accept this is for drafting and perform all edits on the computer. If it's plugged into my iMac, it shows as a new disk drive, yes, and I can call that straight into my WP package. When you switch on, it brings up the latest document you worked on, but if you press "New" + "Page Up/Down" it'll take you to the previous or next document, at the end, and you can continue typing from there. What I would suggest is, take a squint at my latest few videos, which are all about the new Alpha device from Astrohaus. A very good alternative. Hope that helps.

What do you think of the security implications of having to use their Postbox service in order to use Dropbox? Seems strange that you’re forced to store your writing on their servers as well? It seems you can’t delete documents directly on the machine which seems like a big omission. What if the company goes under? You wouldn’t be able to log in to their service to delete your files on the machine. Doesn’t that then make it an expensive paperweight?

I don't disagree, mate. It's not ideal. However I reckon that, were they to go bust, in short order someone would be offering their services to rescue your documents from your machine and clear the memory. meanwhile, if you're that desperate, you can always plug the Freewrite into the back of your computer and use it as an extra drive, and pull documents up that way.

@@writerlywitterings Just thought I'd also say great reviews of this machine btw. Yours have been the ones that tipped me over the edge into buying one. I do love it, there's really nothing else like it. The keyboard is a dream to use, and I love the e-ink screen. Very easy on the eyes for prolonged periods of typing. I hope they never patch the firmware so that you can go back through your document and edit it. I like being forced to keep pushing forward. I think I might just have to accept the Postbox issue for now. Hopefully, that is something that they do patch in the future. I was quite impressed with the ease of the use of the Send facility. One key stroke and the entire document gets emailed to you. I'd be happy if I could opt out of Postbox but keep the functionality of the Send key. As for connecting it a computer, tried it with my Mac, and whilst it's very easy to get the files off the machine via USB, you still have to use Postbox to delete them. The machine really needs a keyboard shortcut to delete it there and then without having to go on a web browser. Still, I'm working around the quirks because I love writing on the thing so damn much. Again, great reviews! I'm a tea drinker as well!

I had a problem once, but it was a minor issue, and since then, nothing. I think you have to bear in mind when such complaints were made. I bought my Freewrite over a year ago, and then it was already a year old. Videos and comments made before the date of my video were of brand new machines, with brand new software and hardware. For a small start up, it was astonishing that they had so few issues, to be honest (I used to work in the computer industry myself, and I know the potential problems with new machines even when backed by a company like IBM or Wang). In the last year, I cannot recall any issues whatsoever. My only comment would be that I wish there was a more precise measure of the battery life - the pictorial system seems to always show a half-full battery. Perhaps that's just fluke when I look at it. However, I've never yet had the machine run out. If I work on it for several hours in a day, I tend to recharge it without checking what the remaining battery life is, so I'm always topping it up. In short, I find it a fabulous benefit. It's a great device. It feels superb, looks (I think) great, and works really well with my Apple. If you find that you are constantly distracted by the internet, I would highly recommend the Freewrite. It takes you away from the desk, and away from distractions. Hope that helps! Best of luck!

I like the feel of the nib running over the surface. Apart from anything else, I find paper, which I can stick up on the walls in my office, is far more practical. It is there for as long as I want it. It's the same with ebooks. I cannot use them for research, because when I research and write, I will often have 5 or 6 books, all open at the relevant page, beside my computer. With a tablet, I would have to keep moving from one book to the next, finding the correct place etc. It's like having to return to the bookshelves every time I need to check a one-line point. Much slower and less efficient for me.

Hi, Somnium. You can type (I think) hundreds of thousands of pages. I've not tested this, but I believe that because the format of the text is very basic, it takes next to no storage. For example, when I used to write on WordPerfect in the 1990s, a complete novel with 120,000 words took up about 240 Mbytes. If the Freewrite has a chip with 64Gbytes, and I doubt it'll have less, it'll hold about 240,000 complete novels with plenty of space for operating system. You don't need to worry about storage. Yes, I work by writing on the Freewrite, then editing on the Apple while deleting from the Freewrite. It is not perfect, because you have to go to Astrohaus's own cloud storage system and delete the documents there, rather than deleting straight from the Freewrite, but it's not a problem. And it does mean you cannot easily delete your work in progress. As far as battery goes - well, I tend to work on it and recharge overnight, but I have managed a couple of times to use it for several days without charging. I don't really know what the limit is - but I think it'll depend on you and how fast you type, how many hours you work etc. Personally I use it up to 15 hours in a day, and it never fails. Plus, remember you can use it while it's plugged in and charging. Hope that helps.

Hey, I've just found your channel and I'm enjoying your content a lot. For a while I've wanted to take up writing. I journal a lot but I've arrived at a slugs pace to books and writing. My life revolved around sport, mainly the clash of drunken hairy legs with Sunday league football these days. However, my twenties have been a turbulent ride and I've found a love for books and writing. My grammar and technical skill lags way behind but I do feel I have some stories I can tell, if only for myself. One thing I want to ask about this device is, can you read what you wrote the day before? Sorry if this is a naive question but having heard there's no cursor or anything, how can one catch up with where the story is? I totally get what this device is for and I don't think I would care about misspelling etc and just bleed away at the keys but I would definitely need to read as I go. Sorry for the essay long comment. Kind regards Sam

Hi, Sam, First thing I have to say is, if you are embarking on a writing journey, you may well be better off with a laptop until you decide you really want to write a significant chunk of words. By all means go ahead with a Freewrite if you are sure, but it is a hefty investment if you're thinking mainly of a hobby rather than serious writing - sorry, I don't want to sound patronising, but I thought I should raise that first. The Freewrite is a brilliant device. Yes, you can certainly see what you did the day before - you just cannot leap into the middle of that text and insert into the middle of it. You can page up and page down to read what you have already typed, but you can only add at the end of the text. Does that make sense? However, the machine is a document within file type of word processor (to use my terminology). That means you can have four, five, six documents in file A. You can add to the end of each of these files. And then add to the twenty files you have in B, or in the fifty you have in C. So each document in each of the three files (no idea what the limit per file is in terms of the number of documents - it is vast) can be expanded as you want, when you want, but only at the end of each document, not inserting in the middle. Hope that makes sense!

Depends what you're comparing it with. It's cheaper than my fountain pen, for example. It's under half the price of a laptop that does lots of things I neither need nor want. It is the perfect tool for me and my work. You could say that a Fuji X100F is outrageously expensive because you could buy a Samsung that would take photos, but could also surf the web, make calls, and do a number of other things really well. But if you only want a camera and don't want the other things, why would you spend money on those and get a less effective camera? You wouldn't. The Freewrite does exactly what I need and because it does it so well, my typing is twice as fast on it. That makes it exceedingly good value.

Also worth noting that the price per unit decreases as a function of how many units you manufacture. iPhones can be as cheap as they are per unit because Apple is making millions of units at a time. So when you're a tiny company making a highly specialized tool which will only ever be purchased by a small number of professionals and enthusiasts, the price per unit is going to be very high. Just like buying handmade pottery bowls vs. mass-produced ceramics from Amazon. I suspect Astrohaus has made it as cheap as possible. Mine's getting here tomorrow, and I haven't been this excited since I was a kid at Christmas!

No, but that's not the sort of thing that would help me, to be honest. I type so much faster than I can write, as I learned when I tried to write a book long-hand, that any system that expects to read my writing and convert it is merely going to slow me down unacceptably. An interesting device, and I'd love to play with one, but it wouldn't ever replace the Freewrite or my iMac.

I have a Freewrite but I didn't end up using it all that much... I'm worried about security on Postbox. I have to admit, the security doesn't bother me too much. If someone's determined to enjoy a life of crime and hacking, the chances of them hacking into a writers' database are so remote as to be infinitesimal. Yes, someone might try to hack into JK Rowling's computer. But to get into Freewrite's? The likelihood is vanishingly small. And if they did, what would they do? Read a book? Fiddle with it? Perhaps. Again, it's a risk that's not worth worrying about too much. If you were truly anxious about it, though, all you would need to do would be to plug the Freewrite into your computer and upload your files by-passing the Freewrite website.

When they brought out the second version, it was just as my review model arrived, and I was told that the battery life had been extended, but that there were some updates to the operating system which allowed more foreign languages (I think). I believe that if you look at the Freewrite website on their blogs, you will see a list of the updates which were incorporated into the newer model, but I'm afraid I don't have it to hand just now. No, not that I know of. But then, there's no need. I don't know what the storage is, but the fact that it works in plain text means that the storage requirement is tiny. Put it like this, one of my novels as a simple text document only takes 90KB on my Apple. That's a book with 140,000 words. So even if the Freewrite has a chip with only, say, one GB of storage, you'd be able to hold far too many books for the average writer! Since there's no graphics, no apps, no web surfing, the storage requirement is tiny. Hope that helps!

I'm the opposite. The slowness of a pen has always meant better writing for me. I think speed and ease of word processors are responsible for for narly all the bad manuscripts and bad books that have flooded agents, publishers, and even bookstores since such electronics came on the scene. I've seen a number of studies showing the brain at work. We don't write letters and words, we draw them, so it's the drawing center of the brain that lights up when the subject is called upon to write with a pen/pencil. But it takes a long time and a lot of effort to make the same happen when the subject uses a word processor. Oddly, a manual typewriter works nearly as well as a pen or pencil. But nothing electronic does this at all. Obviously, some do make word processors work, but I think it's despite the speed, not because of it. I certainly can't make it work. I often widshed I could. I'm always amazed when I see a writer who does make it work. Speed and quality together.

Ah, the obvious question! No, I am afraid not - and sort of, no, but so what? You see, this device is only any good for drafting. There being no cursor keys, no editing function other than a backspace, I tend to look on it as a way of producing work away from my desk. But as soon as I'm back at my desk, I can print it. Now, this depends on your own setup, of course, but I find that I draft away, and when I get back to my desk sometimes I'll print it from there (because it links to my computer via Dropbox, so when I get to my desk, I call up the documents I've drafted and either work on them on screen or print as new documents). So for me, it's no limitation. How would you want to use it?

@writerlywitterings 2 жыл бұрын
No, sorry. I was sent a review model of the first device some years ago, and the Traveller when that came out. For me, the Traveller had the advantage of being very compact and easily portable. However, the Freewrite itself was, for me, infinitely better. It's more stable on a surface or even on my lap, the keyboard made it worth the money, and it's as portable as I need. If I'm going somewhere, I'll always have a bag, and the Freewrite fits all my bags. If the keys are sticking or being problematic mechanically, you'll have to send it back, I guess. If the keyboard "mapping" is the issue, it could well be that you've loaded the wrong country/language layout. There are help pages on the Astrohaus web pages to help you unload and upload new language formats. Basically the keyboard can be set to various formats - in English alone there are several. On the Freewrite Traveller help pages, there is also this: support.getfreewrite.com/article/119-key-not-working which may help. Resetting the machine may be all that's needed. Best of luck! Mike

The main thing is, when wanting to create a new scene, a new chapter, book, blog post, review or a new book, it's so much easier to do it on the Freewrite. I'm very glad you like the Neo. I found the keyboard absolutely atrocious for any form of touch-typing, it was too light to be able to use on my lap, the screen was horrible, and I couldn't use it for any period without getting headaches. The Freewrite is wonderfully ergonomic, a better weight, has superb keys that will prevent RSI, and the screen is a joy even in bright sunlight. The battery will last for days, which is all I need. But it's a case of horses for courses, as I have said before. For me the Freewrite was easily well worth the money. It is much cheaper than its real competitors - laptops - and does the job infinitely better. As a professional writer, I could not use a Neo, but the Freewrite is already a pretty essential tool for drafting.

@@writerlywitterings thank you for your answer. Question: how come the keyboard can prevent RSI? That's interesting. Can you elaborate?
@writerlywitterings
@writerlywitterings 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, of course: there are two aspects of RSI that I have suffered from. The main one is flat keyboards. I have always found that low-level keys with minimal movement pretty quickly lead to RSI. Don't ask me why, but I have always found that the tendons on the back of my hands start to tighten and grow very uncomfortable. This has been the case for at least fifteen years, possibly twenty. The original Apple iMac (angle poise version) didn't do this, but as soon as they moved to the very flat models, it was noticeable. In the end I started looking at different keyboards for that reason. I have a vague feeling (this ain't scientific) that it was caused somehow by my wrists sitting in the same position, and my hands moving sideways to accommodate the fingers hitting the keys. the finger muscles are up the forearms, so I wonder whether it could have been the increased tension caused by the tendons going along more extreme angles or something? In any case, with a keyboard like the one I am using now, and like the one on the Freewrite, the hand tends to rock up and down more, and the fingers are not moving with the hands still, but the entire hand tends to move with the fingers. I think (like I said, this ain't scientific). When I used to watch professional typists working in the 80s, they used to move the whole hand over the keyboard. That is more the way that I work too with a keyboard - because it is how I was taught. With the hand moving over the desk and not resting, the fingers aren't moving while the palm/wrist stays still. It's more a case of the entire forearm moving side to side and up and down. So the RSI at each finger joint just doesn't seem to happen. Which could all be psychosomatic nonsense! However, this is something which I have noticed with every new iteration of flat-key keyboard, whereas a series of individually sprung keys that have greater movement seem to be a great deal more comfortable. And Apple tends to have pretty good keyboards. They have individual mechanics. The worst keys of all are the cheap keyboards which rely on a silicon/rubberised sheet which provides the bounce and the 'feel' of each key being hit. The rubbery layer is too soggy when new (I can't emphasise enough that this is all entirely personal and subjective!), but harden with age, and as they get harder, the effort needed by each finger also grows. And I think a large part of RSI is the pressure required up and down in conjunction with the effort of moving the fingers left to right. Sorry, it's not easy to describe all this. Let's just say that I feel that for me RSI is generally caused by flat keys with minimal travel. The worst experience is cheap keyboards with a rubberised sheet underneath them all, and the very best experience is a keyboard with individually sprung keys with movement of some 4-5 mm. I know it's true for me. I wonder whether there are any reports on ergonomics that reflect this? Thanks again for your interest, and apologies if this sounds like new age twaddle to you. It's just my own experience.

@Pablo Sanchez That is a comment I hear a lot - but it's not expensive, no, if you want something that does what this does! A laptop for me is way, way too expensive at (for Apple) over double the price. Yes, it does more. But I don't want it to do more. A notebook and extra screen? Fine. But I'd also have to spent over £100 on a keyboard. And the three items would mean I'd be carrying effectively a desk top set up and it still wouldn't be as efficient, portable or compact as the Freewrite. I can happily understand that it doesn't do what you would want it to - which is fine. But this is the best tool for the job (if you're a professional writer), and not only is it the most portable and compact device, it's also the cheapest!

Damn... I've been wanting one for a while but the high and increasing price kept putting me off. Not necessarily because I didn't wanna spend the money, but because I can't see where the money goes. The creators say they make tiny margins on the product, but I just couldn't see how when there's only a few main components and most of them aren't super expensive... Then to hear that just five years ago you paid £388 for this. And now it's £700. I guess my instincts were right that they're making plenty of money on these things and being dishonest with their customers about it for some reason, because I really don't see how else the product would increase in price by over 80% in such a short time.
@writerlywitterings
@writerlywitterings Жыл бұрын
To be fair, I think the price went up over Covid because of lack of supplies into/from China, and the price has continued because of US restrictions on certain goods to/from China. The actual cost of the devices is not out of line (in the UK) with general price inflation. As for the cost of the materials etc, all I can say is, they don't make the same quantities as Apple or Dell. Their cost of materials is going to be a lot hight since they buy smaller batches - and the their kit is high-value. Look at the cost of their keyboards, the cost of the moulding for the units' covers. Besides, for me the device is still worth the money just for the vastly increased efficiency over other devices I've tried. I certainly don't get the feeling that they're being dishonest. Yes, they are trying to run a business and make a profit - but that's no surprise. To do so, they have to make 30% or more over their costs, of course.

Hi, Dwight, Yes, it would. Much cheaper. But then it would be old and, if portable, far less reliable. The keyboard would not be anything like as good, the screen would be very bad in broad sunlight, and the balance when resting on your lap would be poor as well. The Astrohaus Freewrite is cheaper than a new laptop, but it's not the cheapness alone that matters. It's the ease of typing on a real typist's keyboard, the e-ink screen, and the balance of the machine whether it is resting on your lap or on a table. I find my typing is about 50% faster on the Freewrite than on my iMac with a separate keyboard using Cherry keys. A cheap, old computer would still be unbalanced when, say, sitting on your lap on a moving train. The Freewrite is stable. There are many other devices which are considerably cheaper. As an author, I really, really appreciate lower cost options - but I have to have a tool that is up to the job. For that I need a keyboard that is suitable for sustained typing, a screen I can use in daylight, and something that is stable wherever I need to plonk it. I've tried many devices, and none have been as effective and practical as this.

Good grief! We had better word processors (the hardware, not the software) in the 1990s. The Tandy 100, the Amstrad NC100, The Smith Corona PWP series (such as the PWP 2000) the Brother LW-840lc, etc., etc., etc....

Yes. And the Wang and Wordplex and Displaywriter etc.We have them now too with the Nisus Writer Pro, the Word and other software systems. This isn't a word processor, though. It's a superb device for people like me - authors - to type and create without interruption.

@@writerlywitterings Sorry, but that statement smacks of elitism. I'm glad you like the Freewrite, (after all everyone is entitled to their own opinion), however I know plenty of authors who can't stand the thing, (including myself). I look at the Freewrite and can only think, "They nailed every last point on the, "How to make writing as difficult as possible," list. Then went and added a few other ideas I wasn't even aware of. If the Freewrite is the future of writing, as I've heard some claim, I do believe I'll retire.

Reasons why the Freewrite is a horrible choice for writing: 1). It's too BRIGHT! Those blinding white keys, and black on off-white only e-ink screen is murderous on the eyes, versus having, for example, a blue-on-dark blue text/background screen combo; 2). "Forward Only" typing. Dumbest. Idea. Ever. Even when writing with pen+paper one can easily "back-up", and review/make minor edits if necessary. Lack of movement options on the page, real or virtual, is not a plus, it's a fatal flaw; 3). Limited cloud storage options. The inability to freely choose a preferred cloud storage, (Onedrive for example), limits the potential customer base needlessly. My own personal writing workflow is centered on and around Onedrive; I can access all of my documents from any device I'm using, at anytime - smartphone, tablet, PC; 4). Price. The Freewrite is simply not worth the asking price, considering all its limitations. For the same price one could purchase a couple of Windows based PCs, and easily configure them for distraction free writing.

Perfectly valid point of view, to which you are entitled - and all wrong. 1. No, it's not too bright. What on earth makes you think they're "blinding"? They aren't. As for your comments on the e-ink screen, well, you're wrong. I can use it very happily (as I did most of yesterday) in bright sunlight. I cannot and have not been able to use any of my laptops in direct sunlight for over twenty five years because the screens reflect everything (which is one reason why your comment at 4 is also wrong). 2. You don't like "forward only typing". That's fine. It's not for everyone. However as a professional author, I can vouch happily for the fact that it works extraordinarily well, and doubles my typing speed - on the Freewrite. That is a function of a very good keyboard, the benefits of the e-ink screen as well as the lack of distractions. 3. Onedrive is a perfectly good option. Personally I use other cloud options. It's a slight limitation, yes. Does it matter? No. 4. Price - well, yes, it's worth it. Having used a Freewrite for two weeks to review, I had to buy it. Having used it now for some five or more years, yes, it was worth every penny. A laptop is not in the same league, slows efficient typing because of the keyboard and less effective software, and cannot be used comfortably on a lap because it's inherently unbalanced. I have proved this to my satisfaction over several writing sessions on trains, on park benches and in my garden. I have never been able to use my Toshibas, ASTs, Apple MacBook Airs or other laptops to the same extent. Keyboards, screens and poor ergonomics mean they are not remotely as efficient as typing/drafting machines. You're very welcome to your views, of course. However forming an opinion without trying the machine first does mean you risk making assumptions that aren't valid - such as the e-ink screen, the "blinding" keys etc. After using mine for several years, my opinions given in the review and as stated here are based on experience, not assumption.

@@writerlywitterings I've tried the Freewrite, (borrowed one from a friend who was selling); with the exception of the keybed feel, (which is rather nice, though I've used better over the decades), the experience was mostly frustrating. Now, as screen preference is totally subjective, we can honestly set that one aside, though there is no helping those ultra-bright-white keys - horrible choice that in full-sunlight are more of a distraction than anything else. Moving on, you are correct that "forward-only" typing is not for everyone - including yourself it seems, as you mentioned in your video, (around ~3:10). The inability to look back at what you've written is never a plus, but rather always a negative, as is anything which limits the creative workflow. Lack of Cloud storage options, along with the limitations of easily organizing storage, (as you mentioned), screams that either this is a product with a limited life expectancy, or, one which has been developed by a team who mistakenly believes in the "Apple Way" of doing things - They know better than the actual user what the user needs/wants. "A laptop is not in the same league, " - No, most laptops are far beyond the capabilities and usability of the Freewrite, in every way. Again though, subjective opinion, so we can set that aside as well. "...less effective software..." - What does that even mean? One of the great things about actual computers is the user decides which software to use, (except for Apple users, of course, who are limited to that software Apple has decided the user wants to use). For everyone else, if a certain software package doesn't do what you need, simply uninstall and try something else. For example, my own computer-based writing needs have remained relatively unchanged since the 1980's - I started out with the Leading Edge Word Processor 1.3a for writing, later I added MS Word for editing/formatting. Those two programs are available still on all of my home and mobile devices, while LEWP, a program written ~40 years ago, integrates nicely with OneDrive. I also have a couple of Alphasmart Neo/Dana models floating about, which I take along when I'm heading out, and don't feel like carrying my MS Surface Pro 7. Bottom line to all this ranting? The Freewrite is a niche product for a niche group of writers who have convinced themselves they are more productive because of it. I've honestly no complaints on that point, I know someone who has been writing since the late 70's with only pen+paper, so to each their own. However, the limitations which have been intentionally designed into the Freewrite are the same limitations which will prevent it from ever being widely adopted.

@@looneyburgmusic I can't use Freewrite (I have neck problems, so I don't like the fact that I would have to look down while typing on Freewrite), but I must say that all of your points are wrong. E-ink screens are absolutely superior to LCDs when it comes to reading text, especially in the sunlight. All laptops with glossy screens are unusable in sunlight. Matte screens tend don't cause glare, but they become too dark and therefore unreadable. Your rant about the "blinding" white keyboard is just funny. Btw, you can install black keycaps. Distraction-free writing is certainly possible without Freewrite. I installed Linux on an old PC and configured it to boot directly to WordGrinder (command line word processor). The PC has no GUI, or even text-based web browser or mail client. It syncs all files from the "Writings" directory to a Dropbox directory. It works fine, but it's not portable. And it lacks forward-only typing. I know, some people like forward-only typing because one of the distractions that Freewrite prevents is thinking too much about the previously written text before the text is complete.

@@morsecypher the idea that eink screens are "superior" is utterly subjective. I personally can't stand them, due to the white color, and the inherent screen lag, versus LCD. As far as the glossy coating, that's a non-issue, simply use a matte screen protector, which everyone should have anyway to protect their screen.

@@morsecypher as for the keys, was not aware black key caps are available, that is good, however, of course, all of this is totally academic when the topic turns to the most important point - price. The Freewrite is overpriced by at least several hundred dollars.
