(Note: This video discusses alcohol use, loss, trauma, violence, murder, death and contains references to deceased people.)
Exactly a year ago, communities and health groups in the Northern Territory (NT) successfully stopped Woolworths from building an alcohol megastore in Darwin, at the doorstep of dry Aboriginal communities, after a five-year-long battle.
In this video members of the local Bagot Community, including President of the Bagot Community Advisory Group, Aunty Helen Fejo-Frith, share their stories and personal experiences with alcohol in the community.
Together we continued fighting, even when the odds were against us. This was a huge community victory after years of poor consultation and lack of empathy for community concerns from one of the nation’s biggest corporations.

Self determination. Don’t have to buy and drink, it’s a choice, make it the right one 🤷‍♂️

The racial problem supersedes the worldwide issue. If you don’t agree, you are Caucasian and have never experienced it.

Yep I AGREE, twenty yrs ago going through Alice Springs, all lined up, 10 am at the bottle shop, too bad if kids have no food, Still the same, now having lockdowns😂, bandaid approach, WHATS THAT GOING TO DO. Never going to change, yet I saw on another video, where the Women blaming alcohol on the deaths of relatives, WHO TOOK THE DRINK, consumed ALL, LOOKING FOR MORE THE NEXT DAY, no OFF switch, like ANTS after Honey, they have intelligence, no one telling anyone to consume alcohol🤬

I can tell everyone, alcohol, smoke and drugs is just poison. Gardening is a great start. We must engineer activity back into life everywhere.

Marginalization of members of society because of cultural and ethnic differences leads to addiction, lack of opportunity and despair. It is the slow but legal tool to achieve genocide and is unconscionable.

Apparently the exact same is happening to the First Nations of North America, the Natives of Central and South America. It is obviously an old Westerners's strategy of genocide. Our europeans governments do exactly the same to the unwanted casts of the society. The most cynical is that alcohol and alcoholism bring billions to these evil oligarchic entities.

All around the world, there are non-European peoples who lack the gene to quickly metabolise alcohol. They end suffering the worst from drunkenness, alcoholism and its effects. So it's not a question of self-determination or equal rights or access - alcohol is simply way more dangerous for such peoples because they lack the resistance to it that most people of European descent have.

Lives without a purpose, lives with a purpose use alcohol, I have the occasional glass of wine! Its up to the individual to use alcohol responsibly OR NOT. Alice springs, years ago, trying to curb sales of alcohol, lock downs, it doesn't work, like ants attracted to honey, while the honey is there the ants will be also. Dry communities, I dont know the success rate, but then you have those who will sneak alcohol into a dry communities. When I worked in nth s aust, small town, pension day there would be cattle trucks bring in blackfellas from outlying areas, the next day there'd be people sleeping it off, one fella had a tomahawk embedded in his skull, still alive, whitemans " rot gut" is not meant for the first Australians, they were happier in their native, natural element, such creative, knowledgeable people. As an Australian country person, my words, to any who may think im being racist, you have zero idea, this is real, & true!

As someone who worked on Aboriginal missions and reserves I would fully back what these women are saying. The communities were great places to be, but when the grog arrived, sadly community cohesion fell apart.
