Please stop it with the narrowminded arguments. They are borderline dishonest at this point. Its a complex calculation, let us treat it as such and stop trying to stop people from doing anything at all just because you are too lazy to do the actual math on this. How much less fossil fuels you think will be burned over the 6 to 8 years LiFePO batteries last on a system like this? Easy answer: the savings completely offset the fossil fuels used to create the batteries needed for such a system and then go on to easily save the same amount more than twice before needing to be replaced. (If you are diligent in the management of the batteries and never let them drain entirely each day they can last up to 10 years.) It's a lot of less fossil fuel burned and if the grid ever goes down you won't even notice it.

When you calculate the cost of energy you have to consider the rising cost of utilities. Power is .10 a kw now but in ten years it will be 10-50% more depending on the area. The one time cost of solar is a 30 year investment that keeps on giving.

My state actually allows Power companies to charge a penalty for using solar panels. To add insult to injury Alabama Power only pays "avoided costs" for energy you send back to the grid. These policies are so backwards.

Hallo Jerry. First off, thanks for the great and interesting videos!! I live in Germany and we pay € 0,32 per Kw/H (that's the most expensive in the whole of Europe). We're getting a ton of sun here in the south of Germany but with the cost of the solar system and installation, the shortest time to get even is about 10 to 12 years. Most of the insentives from the government have been scrapped and you will pay full price for the system. The amount you get back for every Kw/h you put in the grid is a joke (under €0,05 and keep in mind we PAY € 0,32 per Kw/h) so it seems the German government is actually actively discuraging people from going for Solar. The initial costs and long payback time are not woth it to a lot of people. A shame really.....

Your energy pricing is roughly the same as ours in the UK. We're on 25-30pence/kwh so approx the same as you, and 5.5p/kwh for feed in. There is presently no incentive scheme for solar install. However with costs of hardware dropping like a stone, a self install 4kW system here is around £2,500gbp of hardware. Plus the self effort. Presently we're only seeing 2-5/kwh per day production, but do produce 20-25kwh per day later in the year. Based on our usage, it's approx 3 years payback time at present..

Honestly municipalities should start requiring solar panels on all new-build residential and commerical buildings. It would take a long time to tie all residential solar panels into the overall grid but with the increasing economic viability of photovoltaics roof space - especially in places like AZ - is essentially wasted real estate that could be used for cheap electricity generation that could reduce loads on the existing grid.

With regards to east vs west power, it depends on where you live. In sunny parts of Australia it’s about 88% of the north (your south) facing. But in areas further from equator it goes over 90% so most new installs in Australia are east+north+west in 3 strings or micro. This is really a new thing with the efficiency of some of the later panels. If it’s a slightly longer ROI it doesn’t really matter. I know if really old systems going string after 15 years, so they would have paid for themselves many times over. And better still…. More solar means less coal.

Absolutely agree. Australian here and will be aiming to get solar later this year on E/N/W option as you said as my north facing roof isn’t very big but have a large west facing roof.

​@@AidanCran you won't regret it :) Whilst I have north facing, I was speaking to my rear neighbours (both of whom have strictly east-west roof aspects) about how solar is such an affordable investment (particularly in Australia). But they still remember the days of north only. Shortly after the conversation, both neighbours got quotes and within 2 weeks, both had operational systems. A year on (even in the bad rains that have hit the east coast), the systems have proved their worth. During the rain when I had almost no sun, my system was still generating a saving to the point my electricity provider was still paying me for net export. The smart thing the Australian government did very different to the US was two main points: 1. Clear the red tape allowing for certified installers to do the work in a very straightforward manner 2. Provide a mechanism for quickly dealing with Renewable Energy Certificates. Someone in the US can really comment on how they deal with Renewable Energy Certificates. In Australia though, the Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) involved with solar installations are called “Small Scale Technology Certificates” (STCs). These are offloaded at point of sale of the solar, to companies that need to offset emmissions (usually filthy fossil fuel generators). But to the purchaser, it appears as an immediate rebate off the solar system. Benefit of the scheme is that: 1. Government does not have to actually spend money - they set up the system (although many still think the government is handing out money - which for them is just good marketing). 2. The residential solar owner gets financial benefit immediately and does not work 3. Red tape cutting means that from getting a quote to having a working solar system can be done in as little as a week It's led to Australia having the highest uptake of residential solar per capita globally (Germany and Japan are 2nd and 3rd)

@@AidanCran I think great thing is that the phasing out really times well with the fact that solar products are becoming cheaper every year. So the “rebate” (incentive) has always done a good job of making solar affordable for the average Australian home owner because more was taken off price when expensive, and less as it gets cheaper. Price has always been around $1 per W whereas countries like the US have only recently broken $3 per W

We had to do ours like Johnny Cash got his Cadillac. One piece a time. We started out with a 45 watt Harbor Freight system. Added 2 100 watt panels 3 times so far and still going. We have a generic 10 watt panel that is for charging cell phones and 2 way radios. At this point i can power my fridge, 40" TV, DVD player a pair of small table lamps and a 20" box fan. I also use the 2, 5 or 15 watt fluorescent bulbs that came with the HF kit. I can generate about 650 watts now. Next month 850. Ive invested around $800 so far plus batteries. I get a great deal on them. I pay $105 for 110aH sealed acid type. Our system isn't top notch, but my fridge, tv, movies and most lighting is FREE. By adding what we did i was able to cut my power bills in half.

@@mac11380 is there a statistic to back up that claim? Most everyone I know eventually moves houses. I've literally only met 2 people that weren't boomers who managed to out right own their home. Could be because I'm approaching 40 and people just talk about starter homes......which implies that you'll buy a home after that. Im American and I just simply don't understand this concept at all. It would make sense if homes were still considered a commodity like a car like it was before the 70's. But now homes are seen as investments which is basically going to destroy the American dream a little more for each subsequent generation. The rate houses increase in value significantly out paces wages. What makes it worse is as homes grow in value starter homes get demolished to make way for homes that are more profitable.
