Sondra Radvanovsky is a force of NATURE; She is pretty well the most brilliant VERDI singer around in 2020 and as of the last 8 years or so she has moved into THE BEL CANTO repertoire creating a sensation not seen since LA STUPENDA, DAME JOAN SUTHERLAND. BRAVA MADAMA RADVANOVSKY.

My God. My heart is pounding! This is the oxygen and blood of opera, of drama! It’s really daunting how difficult these operas are for the principal singers. But Radanovsky easily cements herself as a living legend! She has complete control of her instrument and this is the kind of compelling singing that I live for!!! Brava!!!

I think this must be her greatest role. It shows her virtues (full, warm sound, great high register) to great advantage without exposing her shortcomings (sketchy coloratura, inability to trill). I first encountered this role with Sills' recording, which I loved, but over the years, I've began to want bigger, fuller voices that didn't need to be pushed and stretched into this role. Radvanovsky really shines here. Her Devereaux far outclasses her Norma or Bolena.

I have heard Radvanovsky only once in person, in recital. Her voice is without a doubt the biggest I have heard in a lifetime of concert-going. Her sound is enormous, and her emotional risk and honesty as a performer is breathtaking. I wasn't in the house for this performance, but I saw it in the Live in HD broadcast. It's almost impossible to convey how thrilling the whole production was. Radvanovsky's voice reaches into your chest (and then she breaks your heart with those pianissimi). The whole cast was remarkable: Polenzani, Garanča, Kwiecien, above all Radvanovsky -- it was like watching them juggle lightning. By the climax of this scene, there were people in the audience openly weeping.

Any doubt that Donizetti's genius was indispensable to propelling Verdi in the direction he went is dispelled in this sovereign reading from Mme. Radvanovsky. At the height of his genius, Donizetti, in these final moments of Roberto Devereux, showed future generations how to reveal painfully honest feelings in music, a courage that lit up operatic inspiration throughout Italy and beyond. But it takes an artist who can combine the deeply human with the ultimate in grandeur to reveal the true measure of what Donizetti wrought. Mme. Radvanovsky, with a vocal capacity as supple and elastic in the tender moments as it is ample in those that strike terror, is just that kind of artist. We can be grateful that Donizetti comes into his own in this unique video. The world can finally understand how much the world of opera owes to this composer with the unveiling of this document. How frustrating that the world has not yet been given this entire performance as seen one fleeting afternoon on HD. Lest there be any doubt about the role this supreme work played in Verdi's professional career, rehearsals for his first opera, Oberto, had to be worked around rehearsals for Roberto Devereux. The younger master must have been steeped in this work as a result.

It is nice to hear someone who actually SINGS these roles as opposed to some of the howling and screaming we are treated to by some of the socalled "bel canto experts" today. But there isn't much in terms of vocal characterisation, just nice singing and stage acting. This isn't Radvanosky's fault - it's just the way we do opera nowadays, where the stage director is omnipotent, often has very little knowledge and/or understand of music and singing, and ALWAYS puts his own ideas above the score.
@rshnrvrrbrt3 жыл бұрын
mind blowing performance!
@wilsonwatt92835 жыл бұрын
Radvanosky is a truly great singer/actress whose voice, like both Callas and Nilsson, sounds harsher when recorded than in person. These large voices seem to fall into two types in terms of the recorded vs live [not recording live but actually heard in the theatre live experience]. There are the large, "soft" edged voices [Sutherland, Flagstad, Norman, Ponselle] whose voices recorded very smoothly and only lose the ultimate sense of size that hearing them in the theatre allows [e.g., Sutherland, who I heard in 12 theatrical roles in large theatres, had a voice so large that no recording really tells you how it filled a theatre]. Then there are the large "hard" edged voices [Callas, Radvanosky, Cerquetti, Nilsson, Varnay] whose voices tend to sound somewhat metallic and thinner, not smaller, in their recordings than they did in the theatre. Nilsson actually often talked about this, saying that she never felt that her voice was recorded completely accurately. I heard her in 11 of her great roles, again in large theatres, and that hard edge in the theatrical acoustic carried the voice fully throughout the theatre but was much more rounded by the acoustic than any of her recordings. I also saw Zoe Caldwell on Broadway in "Master Class" where recordings of Callas were used as part of the play. I have every available recording of Callas but hearing some of them in an acoustically well designed theatre did the same rounding of the hard edge that I heard when I heard Nilsson live. We can never actually hear most singers fully unless we hear them live.
@Shahrdad5 жыл бұрын
Very true. She is very good here, though some of the faster passages show her technical deficits. Whenever I hear her in this repertoire, or earlier Verdi, such as Il trovatore, I always feel she's more a verismo soprano who's dabbling in bel canto. Her florid technique never seems compleat in the same way as Callas, or Sutherland, or Sills, or Lisette Oropesa among today's singers. She "manages" the notes more or less, but in the faster fioriture, I don't hear the sovereign ease and technique of her illustrious predecessors. That being said, she's quite good in his finale, and I love how she goes to the high notes without any visible effort.

Shahrdad I feel the same way. She is so exciting that I was down more so because of her lack of coloratura ability. Otherwise she is wonderful.

Her "Quel sangue versato" is an amazing tour de force, maybe one of the best sung vocal performances heard (and recorded) in the last decades. Incredible breath control, very even and homogeneous singing, tasteful expressiveness, perfect control of dynamics, powerful forte notes, seamless legato throughout the entire range... I always admire Radvanovsky's singing, but sometimes I feel something is lacking. Not here, though. This "Quel sangue versato" is a Bel Canto lesson for all the ages.
@spyridonroumeliotis78319 ай бұрын
Well, she does lack the coloratura needed to tackle the passages Donizetti composed and which are being omitted here. Also, her legato is far from acceptable, especially for roles definitive of belcanto on its purest form such as Elisabetta. She does give the aria, her best shot but she’s not a belcanto signer and she never will be one. And please, let’s not exaggerate; if you want to know what this role is really about you should listen to Gruberova.
