Very well presented Sir! As a site carpenter I think you hit the nail on the head when you mentioned the problems with mobility and constant use. I have velcroed a new bag inside my 26 and used an old cylinder extractor to clean my Festool 26 bag every couple of weeks using the Festool dust port for access. I can see the bag failing eventually, but should save a few fivers each year. Thanks for your hard work, its appreciated.

Hi Peter, Enjoy watching all you're videos. I've been using the dust deputy on my CT26 for about 6 mos. and it works very well. I install kitchens and use it on every job, no problem with the portability you don't even notice it's there. When I received it from Oneida it came with two independent lab tests that show negligible grounding degradation. I had my electrician buddy check it out and came up with the same results.

New Brit Workshop A good point is made here, whilst the Ultimate increases the height and weight, the 'footprint' and mobility remains the same. The lid on the Ultimate on be inverted (so the Cyclone is inside the drop box), this makes the system more portable for mobile and site use. Don't forget that the Ultimate clips onto the Festool Vac in the same way that a sustainer does.

An excellent presentation of an excellent product. I recently purchased the UDD and connected it to my CT 36 vacuum. I made 6, 4 foot cuts of 3/4 plywood with my TS 75. Inside the plastic bag of the UDD was the amount of sawdust you'd expect to find from those 6 cuts. Inside the new bag of the CT 36? Absolutely zero dust or chips from what I could see. I can't speak to the durability of the UDD as I've only had it a short while, though it does have the feel of a quality product. I can say it performs very well and is a welcomed addition to my shop. Thanks Peter!

Peter, great video, Ive owned one of these for two years, and Festool USA have said they will not honour warranty because it does not meet their anti static requirements. Also, according to the Festool Training Manager, long life bags are not recommended for sanding applications as the filter allows larger particle sizes to evacuate into the chamber and rendering the HEPA filter subject to abuse. I have a CT 36 and a CT 48. I use the Dust deputy with my track saw and router and HL 850 planer with the 36mm hose for everything including shop clean up. The CT 36 is reserved, with the long life bag, for my Kapex.

As always Peter, you are truly a "Cut above". I know of NO woodworking videos, save Norm Abram, that can match; let alone exceed yours. I simply cant wait for each new video you make. Your entire presentation is superb! Of course the sound is perfect now. The videos are first class. Having said that; and this is going to get me no brownies; but I must take issue with the entire world's thinking that has permeated the dust collection scenario and wood working for years. IE: There is all kind of "war stories" concerning "explosions" when using plastic dust piping, etc. EVEN manufacturers have played into this as well. But there are NO credible examples any where that prove these claims.. In fact there ARE engineers that categorically state, "There is simply NO truth to the claims. Further, there is simply NO need to ground plastic pipe. It is a myth and a total waste of time." (Remember plastic can NOT conduct electricity thus a ground wire means nothing to it.) Yes one can get a shock, but it is NO different than the shocks we all put up with in the winter time with dryer air. But other than the shock there is NO harm done. As to the electronics in the Festool dust collectors, there is really not a "snowball's chance in hell", that this would ever come to fruition. Festool has not researched this I am sure. Again I repeat, this is going to win me no brownies and many will take me to task. But in time I sincerely predict that all will now that it is nothing but speculation with not a shred of credible evidence that any kind of explosions were caused by static build up in plastic pipe and/or fittings. We should never forget what the whole world believed in the days of Columbus. In addition the unprecedented scenario of Galileo proving the entire scientific world wrong; when it came to the rate of descent when it comes to gravity. Etc, etc and etc. If you are in doubt, or concerned, then go ahead and spend the money and "be safe"; but there are plenty who will be just as "safe" who discount unproven theories. FYI please click on the link below: home.comcast.net/~rodec/woodworking/articles/DC_myths.html
@NewBritWorkshop9 жыл бұрын
pat dee Hi Pat, I believe that the issue with static in the woodworking environment is to do with the volatility of dust mixed with air (it can be an explosive mixture) and the static discharge (the spark) may be enough to ignite that explosive mixture. I have seen it demonstrated but I have to agree that I have only ever had hearsay evidence of it happening. Festool take the risk seriously and have ensured that their extractor systems deal with the problem by having conductive hoses and a path to earth through the extractor. Oneida have reacted to the risk posed by using ordinary plastic cyclones by replacing all of the parts with special conductive plastic. That is a lot of investment by both companies and so I have to assume that they are doing it to try and eliminate the risks caused by static build up. The technical side of this is way above my pay grade ! Many thanks for your kind words and your great support. Peter
@toolovation9 жыл бұрын
New Brit Workshop Oneida addressed the static issues very thoroughly at their factory, including independent tests. The conductive components will give static a route to earth providing your vacuum is properly grounded through the supply lead. Use extension leads with caution in case they have a poor or absent earth conductor, only adapt the Ultimate system with conductive components. Follow these basic rules and you will be OK - more information here: www.oneida-air.com/static.asp?htmltemplate=static/ultimate-dust-deputy-grounding-path.html

Weirdly, i just bought a CTL 26 and DDD and it fits the other way around on top of the Festool. So, the connector for the small tube that keeps the bag down is on the other side from the Festools vacuum inlet! And i can't turn it 180 because the DDD only fits one way on top of the Festool.

Wonderful video, thank you for sharing. The static pressure test was great to see. I've always wondered how large of a drop off there was with the static pressure and CFM by adding the UDD. I'd also be curious to see how those number compared after vacuuming up say 13 liters of saw dust. My guess would be that the UDD stays consistent while the standard setup drops off as the bag fills and the filter dirties. Might make for a great video!
@NewBritWorkshop7 жыл бұрын
I did think about this but in fairness to Festool the CT extractors do retain their sucking power as the bag fills up. If anyone has a CT use it until you judge that the bag is about half full. Then open up the machine and look at the bag. You should see that the dust looks as though it has been compressed into a block. You should also see that the outside of the bag is perfectly white and that the inside of the receptacle where the bag sits is spotlessly clean. If a bag were to get clogged then it would discolour as the very fine dust accumulates in the fabric. I hope that explains why I have not done the additional test. Cheers. Peter

Great video Peter . I've set my Ctl midi extractor to cyclone and drop box which work very well. But I didn't know it had to be earthed due to static . Do you know if running copper wire around the inlet and outlet to a earthing spike would do the same job as the system you have just shown in the video ? I'm just a retired soldier with very limited knowledge of static lol I know in the passed when refuelling trucks with petrol the vehicle had to be earthed. Well I've learnt something new. Thank you keep up the brilliant videos.

Terry De'ath Hi Terry, After I built the Dust Hub (see the video) I discovered that Axminster sell an earthing kit for the plastic tubing. It consists of copper wire that is wrapped around the outside of the pipes and then connected to earth. The only problem is that the earth should continue through to the hoses and then on to the tool. I have wrapped copper wire around the plastic parts of the Dust Hub and the wire is connected to earth. I am sure that will help. I cannot test if the Oneida UDD will eliminate static but they have clearly designed the system to beat static and you must make a judgement on what they say. Peter

Hello, thanks for sharing this test with us, but to be honest I think it's not entirely fair to run these test only on completely empty bags. I think you should take all three setups, and suck up about 15 liters of sawdust, and then see which system wins. The biggest benefit of using a cyclone is that you keep full suction all the time, instead of losing about 60 percent of it after only having filled up the new (and very expensive) bag only about one third. Even though it's bigger and more cumbersome, I will always use my cyclone. It has, over the course of three years, literally paid for itself more than 10 (ten!) times!

New Brit Workshop The key benefit of adding an Oneida Cyclone to your vacuum is the 99+% separation - this means less than 1% of your dust and chips reach your vacuum, so, virtually no filter clogging. The Oneida Cyclone will separate course and fine dust from the air so your vacuum maintains a higher airflow for MUCH longer.

Thanks for making this informative video. I had a Dust Deputy on my vac before I upgraded to the CT26. I also read some of the horror stories regarding static build up effecting the electronics of the CT26 on the FOG. It would be nice if there was some kind of affirmation that the Ultimate DD does not have the effect on the electronics I have heard of. Do you think there is any way to test this for static issues?
@NewBritWorkshop9 жыл бұрын
GuysWoodshop You have to go into these things with an open and enquiring mind. On the FOG there are countless stories about CTs being destroyed by static yet Festool sell hoses which have no anti static properties (the grey hoses). On the other hand Oneida make no claim (that I can find) that the UDD is safe to use with a Festool extractor. Also the Oneida warranty is only 90 days. Every individual must make up his or her own mind about using any cyclone. It is possible to check the static electricity conductivity of your system and it is covered in the Oneida instructions - you just use a resistance meter to measure between the earth at the wall socket and the tool end of the hose. Peter

David M Thanks David. The remote control is from Maplin in the UK - I imagine Radio Shack would stock them elsewhere. It comes with 4 receiver units which each plug into a wall socket and one controller (transmitter) with 4 on/off buttons. In the UK they take the full 13 amp load of our normal domestic mains sockets. The whole lot was about 15 UK Pounds. Peter

Great demonstration. I want one! However, £275??!! Yes, it will save money in the long run, but I think for what is essentially a plastic tub, some hose, and the cyclone unit (which can be bought at a fraction of the cost separately), this is a bit steep. Feels a bit greedy to me.
@NewBritWorkshop7 жыл бұрын
Hi Mark, I think that you have a valid point but... You may know that I design woodworking tools and the cost of getting tooling and moulds made for plastic production can be huge. One small part that I designed that would fit easily in a trouser pocket required up front tooling costs of £6,000. Now if you are making plastic dustbins and expect to sell over 1 million that is not a problem but for a niche market like this where Oneida will be selling just a couple of thousand the tooling cost is significant. In this case, and I am guessing, there may be £40k or even £50k of costs plus design and testing. Peter
@markcollins34697 жыл бұрын
I do take your point Peter, but I still maintain that it's disproportionately overpriced. The cyclone unit would have been a far more complex product to develop, and that is significantly cheaper. I'm cynical of the volume argument as well - Oneida are distributing multi-nationally in 14 odd countries, including the US and China, so despite the niche market I'd be very surprised if they sold just a couple of thousand units. Plus, if they really expected to only shift modest volumes, would they even have embarked on the project in the first place - it wouldn't make commercial sense. I appreciate that product development is not cheap, but they appear to be reasonably established, so there would also be economies of scale for bringing items to market. The only other thing which might bump up the cost is potentially any licensing arrangement with Festool. This would most likely be significant. If I was recommending it to a friend, I'd say it was an elegantly designed product which performs well and integrates seamlessly with Festool dust extractors, however it is very expensive.

Have you considered doing a follow up, comparing the performance of the bare CT and with the DD attached, after you've machined a bunch of wood and the bags are half full of fine dust? That would be a very worthwhile real world test!! It would be fascinating to see if the DD equipped extractor out performs once a lot of fine wood dust is introduced into the equation.

Hi Maximus, Now that is a very interesting idea but not one that I have in the current schedule. I have no doubt that the DD would out perform a CT with a bag clogged with fine dust. Now even with the DD there will be some fine dust getting through to the CT and that is why I always change my CT bag once a year. Cheers. Peter

How do you tell if that can is full? Is there some sort of indicator?
@NewBritWorkshop4 жыл бұрын
Hi Albert, No but I check it every day and judge when it should be emptied. That method has worked for a few years now. Peter

@@NewBritWorkshop ah thank you. I actually didnt check my bin for a bit and it ended up sucking up the dust into the vacuum. Not sure I have the discipline to check everyday : ) Though ive seen ways to create some external indicator

Hi Peter, I recently purchased the HK 55 circular saw after seeing your review and I cannot wait to try it out, so thank you for that. While I was at my local Festool store I had the opportunity to look at the new midi extractor and compare it to the 26. I think you could be right about bitting the bullet and spending a bit more on the 26. I would need to purchase it in 110 volts mode. Can I ask your opinion on an absolute crazy question?- I noticed there is space on the extractor for either a Bluetooth connection or a second plug. Is it possible to have that second plug in 240 volts so as to have the best of both worlds? Sorry but I had to ask. Cheers Dan

Hi Dan, It seems a sensible question but the 110v CT will only have 110v going in and the second socket is just an extension of the other (110v) socket. So, no it is not possible. I just do not understand why we continue to force our contractors to use 110v when every mains supply has an earth leakage trip. Good luck. Peter

Was that standard plastic bag or one supplied by the manufacturer?
@NewBritWorkshop9 жыл бұрын
Michael Tricker It was supplied but any bag will do as long as it fits. Peter

New Brit Workshop We can confirm this, you get 3 bags with your Ultimate and whilst we can supply suitable bags in packs of 10 - virtually any poly bag will work. A tip: use a bag tall enough so that you can tie the top when it comes time to remove it from the Ultimate drop box. Some customer re-use their bags, some tie them and dispose

Payroll or no payroll. Sorry, but I find it strange that people find this "very informative". The only thing i see is two different results with two different dust containers with no explanation what so ever of why there might be a difference. The conductive plastic is a separate subject that may have influence of electronics in the shop vac but does it influence suction power/decrease??? My conclusion is that you have made a poor job sealing the white box system compared to the other one? Am I wrong?

Yes, you are wrong. The key question that people ask is whether the introduction of the UDD reduces the performance of the extractor. I made it clear that the UDD had been kindly provided by Toolovation on behalf of Oneida. I therefore had to create a non subjective demonstration to show that the UDD made no real difference to the vacs performance. I added my old DD and drop box to illustrate that home made solutions, no matter how careful they may be created, might not match the performance of the UDD. I had taken considerable care making my drop box with lock mitre joints and soft rubber sealing between the base and the top. The added bonus of the UDD is that you can use ordinary plastic bags to capture the dust which is not easy to do with a home made setup. Peter

Of course a UDD reduces the performance of the vac when it comes to CFM, which is the important factor. You are measuring only the static pressure which is totally meaningless in comparing the three systems. The three systems SHOULD have almost the same readings using the same vac and comparable hose lengths. (A little loss can be expected with the DD inline due to the extra hose length. The only explanation for the white "drop box" system performing inferior is a badly sealed system compared to the other two and and that shouldn't be so hard to correct. Sorry, I don't mean to offend you but you have to prove me wrong...

I am happy with what you have said but at the same time I can tell you that I am perfectly happy with the UDD. Remember that my actual workshop vacuum system for small power tools (and mitre saw) is through a Dust Hub with blast gates. Even with all the extra pipe and extra loss due to cheap and cheerful blast gates I am still happy with the performance. So, I agree with you that there will be some variation in performance depending on the setup but mine does the job. Many thanks for coming back and pointing out how a more detailed assessment of performance could be gained. Cheers. Peter

You get a considerable performance drop with ANY separator but it's totally WORTH it because of the separation. And of course there are big differences in performance of different separators. So I'm not saying you shouldn't be happy with your UDD. And I'm not saying UDD is bad system. For someone not wanting to build anything themselves UDD might be a good buy. The first part of the video is therefore perfectly fine and informative. The second part is very misleading as it suggests that you wont get a (noticeable) performance drop with a DD (or any kind of separator) because static pressure measured in the way you are doing it to COMPARE performance between vac alone, DD with homemade drop box and UDD has absolutely NO relevance to performance. Of course static pressure is important for a system but not in that way. And it is misleading if anyone thinks he/she must buy a new dropbox to get improved performance if the other components are the same. Enough said. Cheers!

Could I at least address you by a first name please...? I want to learn more. Could you produce a video that would demonstrate a method of comparing the CFM rather than static pressure for something like the UDD or similar? If you are not able to create video content then could you at least explain, in detail please (for a rather thick old guy like me), how to construct such a demonstration? I am not sure whether I will be able to reproduce what you suggest but would be prepared to give it a pretty good go. In the worst case we can invite others to give it a go. Again, many thanks for the cooperation that you are providing. Peter
