OneMic Series - Psycotic Pineapple - Head Cheese

OneMic (the minimalist recording series) presents Psycotic Pineapple performing "Head Cheese". About the series: John Cuniberti's OneMic series showcases recording artists performing two songs around one stereo ribbon microphone. What makes this series so different from other live performance videos is that the artist completely controls their presentation. This means that the sound, balance, dynamics, and stereo image are decided upon at the moment of creation, not in post-production. The artist (band) is responsible for the final product. Also, a high-resolution 4k video is shot with one stabilized handheld camera that hovers around the performers during their live performance. There is no editing of the audio or video. It's as honest as it can be, including imperfections. This organic presentation isn't limited to "acoustic" music, as seen with live classical and folk music. In this series, John will attempt to record bands with electric guitars and drums that typically require a multi-mic, multi-track approach. This single microphone technique was quickly forsaken soon after the multi-track tape recorder was invented and, with it, a level of musical intimacy. The OneMic series will demonstrate the positive aspects of the minimalistic recording process of the 1930s but will be captured on modern recording equipment. I absolutely love the concept of this OneMic series... please continue! My favorite part is how realistic it sounds, when all of the dynamics and imaging have to come from real physics, instead of pan pots, sliders, and Muh Gear. A lot of multitrack recordings seem to insist that the vocalist is somehow sitting on the kick drum (which also, inexplicably, has a bass amplifier jammed inside), while cymbals are being smashed in both of his ears, and a Marshall stack is flying around the room. And that's fine... but people forgot what a live performance actually sounds like.

PS do you have any OneMic videos of something like a band doing hip-hop, or rap? If not, perhaps you would be interested in recording someone like Skizzy Mars, with this minimalist style.

Grotesque and beautiful all in one package! I have seen him do this live at the Paradise Lounge in the past so am familiar with the song. Mr C. has tightened the focus and really brought this art piece out to where the observer cannot look away. Very entertaining and thoughtful.

Yes, because all the performers are on one side. Normally, I use stereo Blumlein, so I have a stereo field to work in on both sides. on the mic.

Head cheese sounds gross, but after a little browsing I see it's basically like a sausage or lunch meat and most people don't have a problem with that. People probably get hung up on the eyeball part. Personally I'm way more grossed out by lobster or calamari. I am now motivated to give it a try. So not only did this man give me the greasy crunch of Defiance 'Void Terra Firma' but now 34 years layer he's expanding my culinary horizons. Nice.
