These are my TOP 10 MUST SEE SIGHTS and HIDDEN GEMS that we saw during our 5 weeks in China. From busy cities to cute hipster towns. Natural wonders to man made gems. China really has everything need to make it your next favourite travel destination: this is your China travel inspiration!
In this video, we look at the best places to visit and some of the most useful China travel advice for your first visit: including train travel, how to access the internet through a VPN and how to deal with culture shock.
EVERY PLACE FEATURED IN THE VIDEO (in alphabetical order).
BEST VPN FOR CHINA: To access any western social media platforms in China, you're going to need a VPN. Ivacy offers a great VPN for a very affordable price (ad): www.ivacyforcanada.com/specia...
APPS TO DOWNLOAD
I should really have mentioned this in the video. Before your trip, make sure you download WeChat (it's free) for scanning things in shops and restaurants for translation. Didi is also a good one, it's the Chinese Uber!
BEIJING
The capital of China is a big, busy city but it's little hutongs are a lot of fun to explore. The Summer Palace and the Forbidden City are both really worth seeing as well.
CHAKA SALT LAKE - • CHAKA SALT LAKE: China...
A lesser visited gem, located about 4 hours away from the city of Xining in Qinghai province. Famous for it's mirror-like reflections of the sky.
CULTURE SHOCK
I received a lot of comments saying that people had some reservations and fears about visiting China. To be honest, I felt the same way before I went.
DALI - • HIDDEN GEMS of DALI, C...
An ancient city in Yunnan province that has a little bit of everything that I love! There's nature on the shores of Erhai Lake and up in the heights of Canshan Mountain. The stunning Three Pagodas temple and the bustling culture of the ancient city.
GREAT WALL OF CHINA - • ABANDONED GREAT WALL o...
Requires no introduction. But I really recommend exploring the wilder and more remote areas of the wall, rather than the touristy sections. In this film I looked at 3 different areas and compared the strengths and weaknesses of each.
HONG KONG - • I didn't expect this i...
A giant, sprawling city. Which also has some amazing natural spots like Lantau Island and Kowloon Park, That's what I focussed on in my travel film.
KUNMING - • KUNMING, CHINA: The UL...
Kunming has a reputation for being a transport hub, but it's actually a really fun city to spend a few days. The Dragon Gate and Green Lake Park are particularly great and are the main focus of my travel guide linked above.
LIJIANG OLD TOWN - • LIJIANG OLD TOWN: Hidd...
A beautiful ancient town with stunning maze like streets. It rained most of the time we were there, so I went searching for the little hidden gems of the streets.
RAINBOW MOUNTAINS - • RAINBOW MOUNTAINS of C...
This was the best day that I had in China. Away from the Danxia Landform Geopark is a peaceful national park that is so worth exploring. It feels more like Australia or the US than China.
SHANGHAI - • GOODBYE in SHANGHAI: L...
The last stop that we had in China. You can get some amazing views from the World Financial Centre Viewpoint.
TRAIN TRAVEL IN CHINA
The main way we got around China. We booked everything through China Highlights, which made thinks very easy (not sponsored, just good): www.chinahighlights.com
VPN (virtual private network)
You need a VPN to access almost every western social media accounts in China. For an affordable, but good VPN use Ivacy (ad): www.ivacyforcanada.com/specia...
XIAN - • 24 HOURS in XIAN: Thin...
I spent 24 hours exploring Xian and it definitely wasn't enough time. The Terracotta Warriors are amazing, but my film focusses on the other gems of the city.
XINGPING - • LAOZHAI MOUNTAIN HIKE:...
Home to the best view in China: Laozhai Mountain.
YANGSHUO - • YANGSHUO: China's Most...
Beautiful karst mountains, rivers and hiking. My video guide features everything we did there and it's a pretty extensive list! Including instructions on how to get to the best viewpoint in the area.

Thanks so much for watching guys! Obviously China is pretty massive, so you can only see so much in a 5 week trip. Which places did I miss? I would love to hear your recommendations for my next visit, plus it would be really helpful for anybody else who is here when planning their China trip! 😊

We took a train from Xining to Zhangye and hired a driver from the station to drive us around the mountains for the day. There's a longer video about our experience doing this, if you're interested: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z5PJpWmEjNqJmM0si=6Scg6dfe_f0Zux6A

Me and my husband LOVE your videos! We are planing our China trip and want to visit 5 attractions (and they are far from each other) and some of them very hard to book tickets online on your own. I saw in one of your videos that you mentioned that you used a travel agent to book your train tickets. Can you please recommend us a travel agent?

Hey mate! Great videos, we are planning our trip to china in a few months and this helps us lots!! One question, I see you guys didn't visit Zhangjiajie and Chengdu , any reason in particular?? Thanks in advance.
@OneShotAdventures
@OneShotAdventures 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! The main reason was time, we just couldn't fit it all in. With Zhangjiajie, we thought we would get our karst mountain fix in Yangshuo and Chengdu didn't overly appeal when we had so many other cities to visit (it does look like a nice city though). Hope you have a great trip, please feel to free to ask any more questions 😊

So great series Ryan. As a Chinese I’d like to recommend you to explore more awesome places but it depends on your preference. For the natural scenery I would recommend 玉龙雪山 or 轿子雪山 or 梅里雪山 and 西双版纳and 香格里拉 and 稻城亚丁, all of these are in yunnan province. Go north, 九寨沟,峨眉山,成都 in sichuan province. From sichuan or yunnan, highly recommend you experience driving to Tibet. You can use some apps to find the mates to go there together. But please be prepared for its extremely high altitude. So many places worth to try. I just can’t list all of them here. Which I’ve listed are enough for you to get another long term adventure. Hope it’s helpful for you.

Hey Ryan, i hope you answer this question. So i‘m currently in Japan an visited tokyo and kyoto and all that and i‘m going via Seoul to Peking in about a week. I‘m planning also to hike a lonely part from the chinese wall like you did. How do you managed the bus rides though? Did you just walked very far and then made a turn to catch the last bus back to Beijing or did you walk from A to B and took a bus then? Marc 😀 Of course if someone else has the answer or tips, i would be very thankful!

Marco hey Marco! I did three trips to the Great Wall when I was in China. For Jinshanling and Mutianyu we walked for a while then turned back to catch the bus back. But when we visited a lonely section we stayed at a homestay in the countryside. So we completed a 4 hour loop that took us back to the village by evening where we slept for the night. The homestay was called Great Wall Fresh and I would highly recommend booking with them. They will advise you on the best hiking routes.
