20 sets really isn't enough if you're the dm, you wouldn't have enough d6's for an epic level spell. Or even some spells cast by level 21 casters, there are several spells with no listed upper limit of damage, just x dx per level. There are epic spels that deal 100s of dice of damage, how can you roll 312d10(I think it's d10 for that one spell). Anyway, point is how can you roll 312 dice with only 20 sets, it just isn't possible. You'd have to roll the same dice 15 times just to do the damage for the one spell, and that simply can't be done. The spell btw is called vengeful gaze of god. Its in the epic level handbook.

@@haerdalis84 lol! But they do have regular spells that do more than 20 dice of damage in 3.5e on. Btw, I like you're screename, that character was one of the best ones from bg2 I believe it was, maybe bg1-soa. But a character that was very well done. On a different note though, yes, I'm aware the epic level handbook is a 3e supplement, it is compatible with 3.5e so I do use it. While epic spells are in fact highly op, and often broken, I don't know that I'd consider them nonsense. The biggest control factor for casting them, is that you have to make a spellcraft check every time you cast the spell. If you fail the spellcraft check the spell fails, the mitigating factors as far as I understood still take effect whether the spell succeeds or not.(I will reread that though) Also even epic characters, don't really have enough xp to burn 100,000 every time they cast a spell(reducing the spellcraft DC by 100) and the backlash damage, while it has no upper limit on amount, a single caster can only add double their HD in d6 damage, and it cannot be countered or reduced in any way. Further, the ritual factor, would require, technically, by the book, that you get a number of casters equal to the spell slots being contributed to the casting. The other mitigating factors are well, less significant. The multi day cast potential factor does however make very powerful epic spells useless to use in combat, and so limiting the effects in a fairly large way. Now of course, you could craft an epic spell without any mitigating factors, however, a spellcraft DC of 100+ makes casting them fairly impractical if the epic character is not level 50+. I don't know about you, but I have yet to find anyone willing to play past level 30 or 40. And at that level the highest DC for an epic spell they could feasibly cast would be around 60-90 This still leaves plenty of room to make some pretty broken spells. So I think that it's it was a good idea that was executed poorly. But not nonsense. Also, the spells one could make could potentially be just utterly devastating, but the actual power level mechanic-wise can easily be made so that they are more powerful than 9th level spells, but not world breakingly powerful. And all epic spells are subject to the dm's approval. So not completely nonsense. Op, yes. Broken, potentially. I do think it's a mechanc that Wizards could and should refine a bit for better balance, but that's just my opinion.

@@nightfall89z62 compatible only to a degree - 3.5 e had its own take on epic level feats (including many nerfs to their 3.0 versions) and didn't attempt to adapt epic spells at all if memory serves me well. And yes it was absolutely nonsensical (summoning 10 adult red dragons requiring input from npc casters that were more powerful than said dragons for example). Saying WotC should refine a system from two editions ago is equally nonsensical. They've moved on from that edition. 5e has no rules for epic spellcasting and zero indication that it will incorporate them because very few groups ever even get to level 20. You want to live in the past, feel free, but don't sing praises for a ridiculously broken system - it only makes you look like a clown.

Every Tabletop player I've ever spoken to regarding dice has this problem. I get it, I do. There are SO MANY cool designs for dice out there, after all! Some roll and bounce better than others, some make that oh-so-satisfying metal-on-wood clatter as they roll, some glow in the dark, some are rechargeable and light up as you roll them (just ordered some of those myself), Some are transparent, some have little figures inside them, some are hollow frames with number-figures in the middle- I could go on for an hour. And that's not even getting to the people that collect dice-towers and tumblers along with their dice and have specific ones for specific sets of dice.

I have no dice story to share BUT i remember reading a comment here on KZbin about Warhammer 40k. A guy who was a Kriegsmen player and how he went to sessions to play: everyone had a nice box, maybe a briefcase, you know, nice things to carry your army. He? He had a bucket full of soldiers, and people were like "wow, you have a lot of miniatures", "yeah, this is the first bucket". THE FIRST. BUCKET. My first time getting dice was a bulk purchase of over 100. I, technically, only bought 3 things, but at least two had 6 dice sets. I actually think it was a pretty good purchase considering each dice set had it's own bag and one of the purchases had a dice tray.

I am not a dice Goblin. I am a dice Dragon. All of my dice are separated into their own sets with their own boxes. My friend, on the other hand... he's a dice goblin. I don't even want to think about how many sets he has shoved into the same dice bag.

I had friends who would play dungeons and dragons at lunch break during school, one of them had a spare set of dice they were giving away, I thought it was interesting and would have loved a pair of dice because I didn't have any, another friend of mine proceeded to grab them first even though I'm pretty sure he already had dice somewhere, it's been a couple years but I'm still kinda salty about it.
