I was expecting a funny video, but it turned out to be one of the best short guides about character sheets. Just enough info to at least let people know how the hell those numbers got on their character sheet and why. Well done!

I would argue another thing that helps bring your character to life and lets you put your personality, or any personality you choose into them, is a picture of them. Some sheets have a reverse to aggregate more bits and bobs like spells or special notes, and among those is often a box to draw your character. Giving them an appearance helps people to visualize your character and assign something more than numbers and words. You can do this however you want, be it with a pencil, a digital tablet, or even an AI art program that's the new hotness if you're not an artist or are just lazy. That's what I do with my characters. I only have 1 drawing right now, but there will be more.

One thing I have seen in other TTRPGs is that may be worth trying is also writing page references on the character sheet for commonly used things that you don't have memorized.

I unfortunately don't have a group to play with:( Nor do I have a computer to try and play online. Anyway, I created 6 different lvl 1 characters in case I found a group. How I determined my stats is an adapted "Standard Array"; you get 72 stat points to spread how you desire NOT EXCEEDING 20, and then you add any Racial Stats on top of that.

How to make a character 1. Come up with a concept for the character. The concept requires them to have a reason to go out and explore dangerous locations. Example. A young man who served as a Merc. Wants to explore different places to earn wealth but also explore the world. 2. Look through the options that exist that fit the concept the best. Background: Soldier, Class Fighter/Rogue/Ranger 3. Come up with a backstory of why your character is where they are in life. Maybe the Merc band was defeated and scattered. Or maybe you left after the campaign ended and your contract fulfilled. 4. Choose a race that make sense for the world and the concept. Example: Human, Half-Elf, High Elf, Wood Elf, Orc, whatever. 5. Choose a stat allocation that reflect the concept. You don't have to min/max. It isn't that important. 6. Come up with quirks, traits and flaws and play these out when you are in the game. Example: Quirk: Do not like long discussions and will eventually do something to move the game along. Don't think, just act. Trait: Hates sailing on the ocean or anything like it. Wants to avoid any kind of travel on water and rather walk the long way around. Flaw: Greedy for money. Do not risk their life for free. Not above risking their lives, but do not want to do so without a gain for themselves. 7. Never write a character that can not die in a pointless death due to a random dice roll. There you go. That is how you make a character. Your character isn't what is on the character sheet or what mechanics the books give you. Just think of something and do it. Failing is as much part of the game as succeeding is.

Always depends on the Group, 4d6, drop the lowest and repeat it for every stat is often used or roll 8d20s, take out the highest and lowest roll and distribute the remaining numbers among you stats. Note, that when you roll a 19 or a 20, it counts as an 18, and everything below a 4 becomes a 4 As far as I know, there a even more options, but these are the most used ones

Same. I don't have a party but I already have my first character (Tieru, Chaotic Good half-elf bard , I almost have a crush on him😂) and he's my absolute favourite but I have multiple other ideas too. Like Marlath, a Neutral Good human sorcerer who is very paranoid and shy, has serious trust issues+social anxiety and he's constantly stressed. At this point I actually want to write fanfic about how they get in the same adventuring team and become friends. It would be funny because their personalities are polar opposites. Tieru is nice, adorable, optimistic, innocent (he's not a horny bard) and a bit extroverted. I've already written about Marlath, so I think it's easy to figure out that they would have problems with getting on. At the first campfire that the party has together, Marlath would sit on a rock a bit further away his teammates, and he would keep his hood on so no one sees his face. Tieru would see how uncomfortable he feels so he would go next to Marlath to try help on whatever his problem is. But Marlath would misunderstand it, he'd think that Tieru was hired to kill him and that's why he wants to get his trust (for first this might sound stupid but Marlath has a rough past so it's actually not surprising). So after a point he'd push Tieru to the ground and threaten to torture him with a dagger if he won't tell who hired him as an assassin (Marlath is not a fan of torture but in this situation he feels like this is needed for his survival). Tieru wouldn't understand what Marlath is talking about and he'd be very scared. Hopefully the team will notice what's going on and they save my bard or both is body and his soul will be wounded by the sorcerer.

@@hungariangiraffe6361 Lol, be careful. Characters often evolve in strange directions you didn't plan when you created them. Making the character and their backstory is just the beginning, it is how their interaction with the world around them alters them that really makes them stand out. And yeah, sometimes a character just becomes more and more fun while other times they get boring to play after a while. But real people do change depending on what happens to them and so should characters. It is part of the fun. :) I had one or 2 characters that really turned out very differently from what I expected. In some cases that even lead me to retire them, not because I stopped liked playing them but because I couldn't see why they should continue to adventure when they fulfilled their goals and really didn't have any reason to not settle down and use all the money they gotten to live a good life. That is unlikely to happen if your goals are wanderlust or a love of adventuring but if they want to open a tavern, become a famous bard, finding true love or similar it could happen pretty fast depending on your DM and the campaign.
@hungariangiraffe6361
@hungariangiraffe6361 Жыл бұрын
@@loke6664 well, Marlath is adventuring due to multiple reasons. For first, he simply wants to stay alive. If he decided to settle down somewhere he would be found by his chasers (other sorcerers). Then he also wants to find his master, the only person who he trusts and follows blindly, because he was the first person to actually care about him. But once the order of the sorcerers that the master left (moral reasons) have found them and they have lost each other. And for last, since he has spent all his life knowing that he's been chased so he doesn't have a place that he's emotionally attached to. Adventuring is the only lifestyle he ever knew. So if he ever decides to stop it will happen when his hair is about to turn grey. And Tieru... well, he simply loves travelling, learning more, trying out new kinds of food, and helping others. I'm sure that at one point he'll stop (I think he would teach other future bards) but definitely not in the next few decades.
@loke6664
@loke6664 Жыл бұрын
@@hungariangiraffe6361 That do sound good and if Marlath completes his other goals he can always go up against that evil sorceress order. I had this bard who's motivation was to adventure for material and to become a great bard but about level 12 after me playing him a couple of years he was rich, had done a whole lot of adventuring (and only stayed alive due to a couple of named dice constantly rolling high on those saving throws) and ran a thief guild in the sea of Fallen stars, so he was kinda done with adventuring. He bought a high end inn in Waterdeep and got married. I just couldn't see why he would do any more adventuring, he was super rich, his enemies were dead, his songs were pretty famous and sooner or later I would fail those saving throws since he lacked self preservation. Time to retire. You generally don't loose as many characters today as you did back in AD&D even with a killer DM but unless your DM have way too low difficulty any character can die so actually retiring one because they really have nothing more to do is kinda nice. Sometimes a PC deserves a happy ending. Of course, the chance of dying is also what makes the game so much fun. Beating the odds always feel great even if losing a favorite character can be pretty hard, particularly one you played for years. :)

seriously Duke. You should do a whole series of guides such as these. WIth every video covering a different section of the character sheet, and other aspects of the game. Topics like types of armor and weapons (light and heavy, one- and two-handed, ranged and melee), starting equipment options, individual races and classes's traits and abilities, the various kits (healing, herbology, forgery, etc) and how and for what they are used... It definitely would be a playlist I'd save for repeated later reference!!! 😍

Never played D&D but always wanted to try it, even set up a char in advance but unsure how it is seen by others. The char i've made is a Gnome Necromancer with brittle bone disease, which means his Str, Dex and Con is hot garbage, However, because he cannot really be outside and jump about, his spend most of his life Reading and Studying, so his Int and Wis is fairly high, over the years he has been studying Necromancy (mostly cause he ran out of other things to study) and he got the idea to experiment with Bones, making minor constructions, not Minions, but rather Constructions, Furnitures and the likes. So, with his knowledge of the necromancy and because of his outwards thinking, he managed to build a Throne made out of two Skeletons who are basically fused together so that they can carry him around. Because of this creation, he has decided that it's time to do what he never could growing up, go outside and become an Adventurer! And because of his boney throne, he is able to Move and Cast spells, since the Throne would be counted as it's own individual character (controlled by him, obvs) however, since they Are skeletons, they got f*ck all in friction and will Very easily fall over if stepping on anything slippery, should that happen or someone(thing) attacks the skeletons directly, they got a decently high risk of Dropping the gnome, which because of his brittle bones, would cause him to take fall damage. I haven't thought of a name for the lil bugger though, cause if there is one thing i struggle with more than remembering what i was going to do 10 seconds ago, its' coming up with Names. Thoughts? Edit: typos.

Good for writing, bad for playing DnD, you made the character basically imposible to play, he has too many downsides and nothing that makes him more powerful than other magic users. Maybe, if you made that your character cured himself because of necromancy, it could be a possible character to play (who has a good backstory).
@imperfectimp

I agree with the previous comment. A wizard with garbage Con is basically dead already. No hit points + cannot concentrate on any spell. It is a fun character to roleplay but you maybe wanna beef up his Con. Maybe he has some undead fortitude? That is the road I went down with my old man zealot barbarian.

@@diegorassetto Hmm...well kinda did like the whole throne idea behind it, and felt needed a reason Why he used it other than Lazy. Will probably have to put some more thought into it. @RiveroftheWither
@RiveroftheWither Жыл бұрын
I'm going to echo the others really solid story but mechanically not very good. Obviously you don't need to be optimized or anything but either buffing up your con or dex would be highly recommended. I myself have an Owlin Bard(owl race from an expansion) that has low con and str because I wanted her to have hollow bird bones BUT I gave her higher dex, spells that can help her avoid damage and class features that do the same. So while her health is low, she is very hard to hit, that way she shouldn't die in the first fight she's in. While caster classes are less likely to be targeted in certain encounters like against low intelligence monsters, sometimes you'll be up against other smart mages or skilled assassins with bows. Sometimes you'll trigger a trap and have to either dodge or tank a wall spike. If you build a character that functionally can't take or avoid damage, then the character won't last and that's not a good feeling. Playing a disabled character can be enlightening and empowering when done right but it is very VERY hard to do right. I would wait to explore that concept when you have a more firm grasp of the games mechanics and inner workings. Maybe rehash the concept later as an Artificer with leg braces they made as mobility aids.
@ForemostCrab7
@ForemostCrab7 Жыл бұрын
@@RiveroftheWither That's some very valuable insight, and i will definitely be taking it into account when altering him. My DnD ignorance is clearly showing, i have no idea what other real spells or abilities are on offer except for the basic of basics. As for the low con and dex...i suppose i could just make him a cripple and keep the bone throne and make it out of the bones of an agile creature to cover the dex part? cause his entire character was kinda banking on the throne... As for the rest, yea, gonna have to give that some more thought, or sit down with an advanced DM to find alterations...wonder if i could get Mercer's phone number.

I orginally had an idea for a character that was a bearfolk warrior/barbarian, named Kromsha, and he had a little companion that was a female elemental cat named Frita. I wanted to use Kromsha in a campaign at some point and I thought I might have the chance however, when my partner wanted to start her own homebrew campaign as a DM she said that he would not be a realistic choice since bearfolk were too large for the world she created. I understood and respected her choice and instead chose to play as Frita, who has been updated to a talking elemental fire cat with the artificer class. I rolled her stats and she may be the most powerful character in the party and I love playing her. I gave Frita a flaw that is essentially fire immunity, however I need to be in contact with Fire every day or use a fire spell 3 times in a day or I'll go through withdrawal and have to roll focus every turn and have reduced damage output. It's been easy to maintain so far but I'm sure it'll get difficult later and I'm kind of excited for that.

As much as the DM allow for. The game is free to come up with everything you want, but everything can not fit in every setting. Everything isn't inclusive with everything. Some stuff are exclusive from each other. If a DM wants to achieve a certain style or idea. Maybe having walking talking animal people do not fit that style of idea. If you include everything under the sun, you also ruin a lot of things that can happen. Having a mystery where someone have made robotic people who can think for themselves doesn't really work when there is robot people already walking about.

I've always started with backstory first and let that guide everything else (even if it meant added suboptimal feats some times), i find it easier to build characters that way. Dan da Lyon (Daniel, from the village of Lyon. But pronounced like the plant.) He is a city guard (fighter) with a high charisma, because his parents are merchants and he helped run the shop as a teen, learning how to deal with people. The majority of his martial training has come from drilling in the practice yard with his city issued arming sword (making him a skilled duelist) and swinging his nightstick and fists to break up bar fights (giving him a travern brawler feat, and replacing the two hand axes that fighters get with a basic baton and dagger). He is an awful archer, just _terrible._ His parents had left town years ago to return to the life of a traveling merchant, something they had given up when they settled down to raise Dan. Being deeply depressed to near mortal results with his monotonous empty life as a bachelor guard, he drunkenly joined a small band of adventurers that he overheard one afternoon in the tavern contemplating hiring an extra man. Quite but kind, he is the listener of the group, he seldom takes the social lead unless the group has to deal with something he knows well, city guards or salesmen. He is notionally Lawfull Good, obeying the law because it is there, and it was his job, but not out of any strong moral conviction. Laws will be bent but seldom broken without cause. He hates green beans or peas, but loves sauteed asparagus.

Can you make a Part 3 where you build a Level 3 Ranger with us? I'd ask for an Oath of Throwing it Back, but as you mentioned the PHB, I thought sticking to a classic Ranger might give them purpose in your lore. The point of my request was mainly to add that visual element that new players can reference when making their character sheets. Like how to organize the features columb.

Please be aware that naming your character alone could take 2 hours or more. To complete the character sheet could take up anywhere from 15 minutes to 5 hours. 5 hours being the normal one.

Not having a deity in DnD is like being a flatearther IRL.
@derekstein6193
@derekstein6193 Жыл бұрын
Your character can acknowledge the existence of deities, but need not support any. Maybe it is a case of living to spite the divine, or a belief that relying upon any powers beyond your own ability is either unreliable or just weakness. But yes, in most settings it would be seen as absurd for anyone to claim that the divine does not exist.
@DH-xw6jp
@DH-xw6jp Жыл бұрын
No. You can know they exist without worshipping them. I know doctors help people, but I have no desire to devote my life to helping them do so. I know nuclear energy is some of the cleanest energy available, but I'm not going to spend every day trying to convice everyone else to think the same. I know the moon is made of cheese, but I'm not going to fund an expedition to be the first to land on it. You can know the gods of DnD exist in game, you can even have conversations with them, without offering your loyalty to them.

@@derekstein6193 Well, in the Forgotten Realms being an atheist means Asmodeus will consume your soul instead of an eternal afterlife, so good luck with that. This also implies that anything beyond revivify will fail on atheists.

@@azpont7275 Why do you make the assumption that D&D only implies the Forgotten Realms setting? The D&D 5e system is just a ruleset that does not really care about the setting. I can make a world where none of the forgotten realm rules even apply.

@Cloud_Seeker
@Cloud_Seeker Жыл бұрын
The reason you have the choice of either ASI or feat is because feats are pretty powerful. If you make a standard array where all the need for ASI's are removed, you simply remove choices. Also having high and optimized stats are overrated. My favorite character has max stat of 14-16 for most of the game. Still hits like a truck and have a good AC as well.
@KingOFtheGamezz
@KingOFtheGamezz Жыл бұрын
@@Cloud_Seeker interesting, but I wonder - do you min max? Do you have magic items? Or are you simply a fighter with the appropriate fighting styles and manouvers? I like it so the main stat is maxed, and then ASI play a more defensive role (Usually for con, dex, or wis). So yeah, while I am removing choices, I am giving characters a "guilt free" approach to changing their play style, that applies to all classes. Would like to hear your opinion kind internet person
@Cloud_Seeker
@Cloud_Seeker Жыл бұрын
@@KingOFtheGamezz Do I min/max with a character that has the highest stat of a 14-15? .... Dude. At what point is that min/maxing? Also no. It isn't a fighter. It is a Rogue/Ranger multiclass. Here is the problem. What you have done is literally to kneecap any ability for your players to play at a higher level. If you just give people max stats from the start of the game, they have nothing to progress to. You might as well just have started at a higher level at that point and skipped whole "I adventure to grow and become stronger". Remember that a 18-20 in a stat means you are literally at the peek ability a mortal is able to achieve. If you start at level 1 with 20 in Strength and 18 in Con. You are not a simple commoner who started doing adventure things, which is what the range of level 1-4 actually represent. How many demi-gods do you have working in your local Walmart? The problem you seem to have is that you for some reason think it is shameful to not hvae max stats. Why do you think like that? Why do you use the terms "guilt free" as if there is some kind of shame in not optimizing your character to be the absolute best in something? Do you see failure as something that should be avoided at all costs and that it can't build character? I think you have forgotten what you are actually making. You are making a character. Just giving a player a lot of cool shit does not mean they think they are cool. You need to remember that limitations are actually an extremely vital part of what makes something good. Lets say you are a vampire and you need to travel during the daylight. Just ignoring that limitation and allow the vampire to travel during the day is not helpful for that character. It is easier for sure, but it is activily harmful to that character. So instead of having to think outside of the box and travel by the sewers or hire a group of bandits that haul you around in a coffin or something. You as a DM just skipped that part and made the choice of being a vampire meaningless. Necessity is the mother of invention, and you have removed the necessity and killed invention. If you want players to not have to deal with choices of either getting better stats or features. Just remove stats at all. You already ruined so many good ways to handle it in other ways. Have you never considered that you can use ASI's as quest rewards? Like in BG3 where you can make a deal with the Hag and get a ASI? A gain in growth but at what cost?
