Flew this and the DC-10 constantly across the ocean when I was in the military. They were such sturdy and comfortable aircraft (like the C-5 and 747). I also consider these jets serious eye candy. Like the MD-80 and DC-9, I miss flying on the MD-11 and DC-10.

Has to be the back engine (engine 2), there’s more problem with the MD-11 but this has to be the main and common one

The mistake was making it a trijet. Airbus made a the quad jet a340 and it sold decently. Boeing and Airbus also made the a330 and 777 with 2 engines and the results were great. Trijets have issues such as higher maintenance than quad jets and twin jets. If the MD-11 was a twin I think that MD would still be here today.

It's the third engine combined with the in relation higher maintenance and operating costs. The time of trijets was over so I think a huge impact was the fact that they started to work on that project too late... But 10 years before the Dc10 was good enough... Anyway its sad that they became rare. The MD11 and A340 are the "heroes" of my childhood and both are fading away😕

Fluse Int. The third engine was a large factor in the high maintenance costs as its location made it challenging to maintenance as it is harder to remove.

They at one point studied it but my guess is that with the modifications needed, it would not have been viable and the development cost was better spent in just a new aircraft type. Thanks for tuning in :)

Sadly Lufthansa announced that they will retire all of their MD-11F planes including the last one made.

That is sad indeed, but in order for airlines to survive post pandemic, they need the most profitable aircraft which happens to be the 777f. Thanks for tuning in!

ONESkyFlyer it was going to happen though as Lufthansa has always wanted to streamline their fleet and the MD-11 had the amount of units in service in their fleet.
