This actually resembles a philosophical question about a boat that slowly starts to have pieces break off while sailing the sea. They sailors would replace the missing piece each time so it looks like the piece was never missing. When the sailors reach the destination, they replaced the entire part of the boat but it looks exactly the same. The question is: is it the same boat they started their journey on? The answer is that it is and isn’t. Empirically, it is a completely different boat. Essentially, it is the same boat. The answer you originally have chosen will give you a clue on how you view reality or at least which side you lean more towards

His first hypothetical is like the other side of the ethical questions posed in the "White Bear" Black Mirror episode. Spoilers but basically a woman is punished over and over for a crime she actually did but has no memory of, whereas in Chris' hypothetical the copy hitler wasn't the one to commit the crimes but truly believes they did do it. The question in both is, should that person be punished? Theres a huuuuuge mess of debate and philosophy you could discuss about both cases, it's entirely dependent on your views of justice and morality with absolutely no definite answers, I genuinely think it was an interesting hypothetical from Chris but couldn't word it properly then everyone got caught up on semantics
@jaybofa6174 жыл бұрын
benjabby While we’re on the subject of television shows, it also reminds me of the twilight zone episode where a man working for a bank can suddenly read minds. *Spoilers* he read the bank’s security guards mind in which he though “I’m going to rob this place tomorrow”. The mind reader went to the police and informed them of the intentions on the guard . The next day, the security guard was arrested when he showed up for work. The police integrated the guard about robbing the bank. The security guard said that he always told himself that he was going to rob the bank the next day but never actually acted upon his intentions. Therefore, though Chris’s Clone Hitler has these intentions in his head, should he be punished for never committing the crime.

I like how Chris had to put them into a twisted fucked up question to prove his point in the first story-line. They wanted to argue that even with the same thoughts and memories, it was a different person. But once he brought up the significant other spin and how the original dies and the clone remains with the same thoughts and memories, they agree that “then it’s just her” which is what he was exactly trying to prove. It took a roundabout but he proved his point pretty solidly.
