Her eyes are so lifelike and real. Especially when she is blinking at the moth as it’s flying against the light in the train her eyes reacted in a way that was so real and simultaneously so customary for human beings, but so complex when seen in a clay figurine’s facial expression. Her eyes, in and of themselves, told stories

Unfortunately, the truth is much much more work. The eyes are recorded and reduced to single frames, and pasted frame by frame into the movie to match the movements and the other expressions. A long process, like stop motion itself, but in this case definitely worth it 😍

I think this short film can be interpreted in many different ways. In my opinion the train represents life. The guys who were playing chess did not really make their own move. They just let the train decide what to happen next and they accepted it. In other words there are people who just go with the flow of their life accepting everything. The perverted guy could be someone who would want to harm you in your life. The thiefs represent that you could always lose everything without you being able to do something against it. And then when the thiefs stole that perverted man's liver (?) it might mean if you try to harm others, you will be harmed to at the end. And when that woman was wandering around in the train not knowing where to go just shows that your life will always be a maze with unknown paths. You could also fall down and then want to give up. And in my opinion the butterfly (?) symbolises someone or something in your life that will make you stand up and show you the right path. Anyway, I like to interpret it like that haha😂 ps: after 2 years KZbin send me a notification that this comment exist hahaha I want to thank everyone who agreed to my theorie and reading other people's opinion was also very interesting. She is a woman in a very relatable way. My interpretation is that, she was just tired of life. And although she was moving away to somewhere else, probably, searching for a new beginning, she still had all her sufferings sort of packed up with her as well. She didnt know how to let it all go, so she carried them with her. The single train journey, a stage in life, taught her a lesson for life. To let things that weigh you down, go. She lost her way and got confused and overwhelmed because she didn't know if she was going the right way but she had hope. So she learnt to trust herself and follow her hope, where she eventually found her way. I'm still flabbergasted this masterpiece was made 13 years ago.

I interpret it this way. The massive baggages she has when waiting for the train are the memories / precious things she collected during her life. But she only clutch on some of them as she can't remember / bear all of them. For example a ball may be the things that she experienced during childhood. The train is life. She hop on and goes wherever it takes her. She sits there like any other people, just let life do whatever to them. Including the boy, the grandpa, the salarymen, and the pervert retired tennis player. The only goals for her is to keep on her baggages safe. She doesn't live her life, but trap in the past and insecure. One day, life just gone bad. She just lost the things that she sees as goals such as expectations, emotional burdens, etc. Then she hits realization that she can't be just stay like that forever. She takes action and go out of her comfort zone. Searching for where she can be free from the life that she doesn't want. The butterfly is her voice of her heart. She listen to herself and find out what she really want to be in life. Now she takes control, she no longer fear. It showed by how she walk confidently near the end. Then she really free. Fly to wherever she want, without her pasts memories or any expectations of people. -The End.

I think more than anything this short film is simply depicting human nature & emotions. Let's break it down: She's a woman who has a lot of baggage trying to go somewhere. She meets strangers. She's amused, curious, polite, and nervous...she ignores the strangers then, & I think she's also a little sad & a little lonely. The train stops. She's the only one who can't sleep. Instead she's writing a letter, but doesn't know what to say, & she never finishes it. She's scared now, hearing unexplained noises. Someone, something, is coming. She passes out, wakes up, her baggage is gone, she's alone, she vaguely remembers what happened, she gets up & runs from whatever it is, crying, she trips, then gets up & keeps walking. The moth. The moth is in the beginning & the end. At first she swats it away, takes it for granted, but at the end she follows it. The moth is connected to her. It's something she trusts/thinks is beautiful. It leads her/guides her to the light. I think it's just...depicting life. That's all. We all have our baggage, our fears, our little moments of contentment or happiness, we all experience death, cruelty, sadness, loneliness, disgust, we all have our fair share of bitter tears, we all are connected to something even if it's a thing as simple & small as a moth...
@SlipperyTeeth9 жыл бұрын
I saw it as more of what it means to live. The baggage was her emotions and memories, but I don't think that it's the central point of interest. I think you were way off with the moth. Moths are usually a symbol of death and decay, so I took it to mean a symbol of her death. The beginning was foreshadowing her death and the end was put in there to make her realize that she was dead. That's why she went on to the light at the end. The train itself is most likely a representation of the journey of life. The people on the train were likely there to show what one would feel on the train known as life. The book that the kid was reading kInd of confuses me, though. I don't know whether it's reminiscent of politics in life or if it's just an in passing critic of society.
@blackrosezez9 жыл бұрын
The moth very well could've symbolized death, I never said it didn't...& if it does, which may be very likely, what I said pretty much coincides with that because we're all connected to death & death can be a beautiful thing as well. Just pointing out...you're kind of like, disagreeing with me but also agreeing with what I said because everything you're saying is basically what I said but in a different way. But I know it's difficult to articulate someone's point or what they're trying to express through text online. I like hearing different people's take on this film so don't take what I'm saying as like, a basis for an argument or anything. I get what you're saying

***** Don't think about the train, baggage or moth as real, tangible objects. Think of it all as a giant metaphor for life. > The *train* is life as a journey; it's a ride that everyone gets on. We may each have different stops, and we might only meet/remember a few people on it that make an impact. People stay on it until they reach their own terminus. > Every person has bad days and fears - some more than others. Some can handle it with relative ease; others struggle all their lives. It's all the *baggage* of life. > We may not all live through the same times and experiences, but there is one experience that is shared by all - death. Thus, it's the only fundamental and ineradicable thing by which we relate to each other. It's something that almost taunts us and we try our best to avoid. Our own beliefs of death may differ, but we will all confront it inevitably. There's no certainty to any experience other than death - not even life. And perhaps death is what the *moth* symbolises - the bright, white light adds to this as well. Of course, there are multiple ways of interpreting this animation, but it all seems to be inextricably linked to the journey of life and the acceptance of death as an inevitability.

I am a Physicians Assistant and what i gather from this video is that this woman is going through the stages of death. Many of my terminally ill patients describe nightmares or hallucinations. We all worry about our belongings and want to take them with us. The moth has actually been an omen for death, another superstition connected to the moth is that when one is seen, your soul is already on it's journey. Of course this would only hold true if you were dying. Please don't panic if you're healthy and see a moth lol. They are beautiful, adaptive and gentle. This is just my take on the video. Its really well done.

The eyes in this are well realized. Edit after researching: the eyes are LIVE ACTION eyes with an actor, that were then composited on top of the stop motion puppets. ofc this will sound pretty ridiculous but my interpretation of this film is that the woman is in a coma and that she's dying. The train represents her journey onto the other side. Her baggage are all her memories and she's ready to take it all with her even though the train seems overwhelming. The moth represents a peaceful final salvation that follows next. While on the train she regains a piece of her conscience, the people sitting around her are the feelings she suddenly got back (lust, greed etc). The train stopping is she then fearing and having second thoughts about getting to the other side. The thievs are caused by her subconscious mind suddenly starting to funcion again, she's in a morgue (hence why they're cutting up someone's stomach and taking out their insides, which i can conclude means that she agreed to donate her organs) but since they need her organs, the doctors submit her into anaesthesia and then they kill her. When she runs into the room with bloody tables, its her brain replaying the last bits of her memory before she "becomes the moth" and peacefully gets to the other side.

Excelente cortometraje animado.

The moth has always been a huge symbolic element in literature and is interpreted differently through out the world. The fact that these creatures actually burn themselves to a crisp while playing with the fire, mesmerized by its bright dancing flame, has been a source of inspiration for many a poet. the moth sometimes represents passionate destructive love and at others it could symbolize huge change. Over here I think the moth is a motif that is predicting and maybe even instigating change. The lady on the traing is very attached to her belongings so much so that she could not leave a single thing out when she had to travel. Without them she thinks she might not be able to move on in life, so when she realizes that the train is under attack, instead of saving herself she opts to guard her things. And may be even tries to write a will but can make herself give anything away. It is when she looses it all and runs free of all her baggage she realizes that without those possessions she has nothing to fear.

I found such a cnnrction between the seven deadly sins. Though not religious i saw a huge correlation between the characthers and each sin. I saw a simmilar comments in the comment section confirming my suspicions. I think it so beautiful how each charcther represents a certin ascpect. The robbers in my opinion represent gluttony while madma tutli putli represents greed. She had more material possesions while the robbers have something that is needed (kidney) but has an excess or no need for it. The other charcthers are easy to figure out. Im a huge short film fan and this is probably one of my favorites so far. Not only is the animation spectacular but the message makes sense through interpretation.

Wow, 5 years to make this. Incredible. I love the symbolism held throughout the short film, and how it sparks philosophical conversations. Though the ending may seem abrupt, it is in fact a short film. It’s a work of art regardless of the length, very interesting. It’s addicting to search for gems like this on KZbin

She is carrying a lot of baggage in her life that is holding her back , but she most go forward as life continues on like the train , instead her fears and memories stops her to do so finding herself in a comfort zone then she realizes that is more dangerous staying in the corner of life and being alone . She run for her life and once she decide to run from her fears their is no holding back since she needs to survive her own mind and discover a new live as she opens from her cocoon of baggage and memories . That's my interpretation, but I think is open to a lot of ideas . This is a great short film 👍🏻

Like everything in life, this film is open for interpretation.But based on what I saw, it's about a woman who carries the baggage of sins. She's on the road to heaven, but is at a stand still between where souls cross from the real world to a better place. She hasn't yet forgiven herself for the sins she's committed. The robber is herself as she 'fights' to figure out how to forgive herself for her sins so that she can cross the line.

All of their eyes are real human eyes, not just the girl. There is no CGI in this short film, every figure is an actual silicone doll animated through stop motion, and has the footage of real human eyes portrayed by actors inserted on the dolls I for one noticed it immediately. I watched scenes of this short film without knowing anything about it or having any context, and I was quickly enthralled by the realistic feeling of their eyes. I was genuinely questioning if this was an actual doll or a human in prosthetic makeup to look like a doll. Which is what lead me to look it up

The first scene on the train ride just reminds me of the train rides I would take to Chicago to see my boyfriend the first few times we met. It was very eye opening to see people from so many walks of life. I never am impatient or on edge because I just know that these people are all on their own path. I just stick to my path. I've had so many conversations with people all over the world and I feel that we take that for granted so much nowadays. How we can speak to someone who comes from miles and miles away from a place you'll never see probably. I just am in awe of humanity some days. This film brings to light a lot of the harshness a person can go through in the path of life.

This is just my own interpretation. For me, the train represents our journey in life. And the woman represents us. We did see that from the start of the video, the woman has lots of baggages and when she rode the train, her baggages was still with her, it kept her stuck, seeing only the unpleasant/usual things. Which applies to us too. Some of us gets stuck in our own lives. Afraid to go out of our own comfort zones. Unable to see what’s more to life. But as life gets crazier (our journey), lots of things can happen. When all of her baggages disappeared, she felt uneasy, lost, wandering with no direction. And that is because she is experiencing something new. Something she haven’t done before. The thing is she didn’t stopped there, she had the courage to still continue. And as she keeps on going, that’s where she was able to find a better place for her. She found a light in a total different side of life. Lastly, no one knows where she’s heading. Only the future holds.

What I wouldn't do to see this as a feature length film. The execution of this stop-motion short is top notch (and this would still be an understatement to how amazing it was). I really hope the two who directed this make a feature length film one day. Beautiful message, beautiful film.

I feel all the baggage is their past life. The tennis player brings all his tennis stuff as that was his life and his experiences. Madame brings so many luggage, meaning she's rather sentimental and has many cherished memories. The train seems like some sort of purgatory. Now I'm no expert in religion, making me no expert in purgatory, but I know the most basics about it. When everybody disappears as they must have been kidnapped or killed by the thieves, it symbolizes them going to hell. When it is only Madame, I feel it symbolizes her going to Heaven. I mean, the moth guides her to a light. When the light disappears, we as viewers descend from the sky to the ground, and Heaven is always notably described as in the skies. Also, we see the moth in the light slowly turning into a woman with wings, possibly an angel. The letter she was trying to write goes back to her being very sentimental, I don't understand the language but it must have been to an old friend that may have been living. Now of course this is just a theory for a very, very good animated short film :)

Like so many of these shorts seem to do, this has a great visual style, good beginning, dramatic and riveting middle. Yet, at the end, it feels like the creators didn't have any idea how to end it and so, just left it.

Kevin Loughin Psst. they were made for people with deep respect for story telling. you don't get it because you aren't paying attention. they are shorts usually with very small time window and it was executed perfectly. the worst critics in art are those who refuse to study it but love to give their opinion. but this is Earth and nothing wrong with misunderstanding as long as you are willing to listen and learn

Yet its kind of true. Atypical storytelling is a thing for people bored of the stereotypical one with deep understanding of it. Acting like knowledge of a subject doesn't reflect on the ability to understand more difficult structures of anything (storytelling in this instance) is ignorant and ACTUALLY pretentious. Its like saying that Frederick Nietchze is pretentious because you don't understand his books while being a casual reader. Its not really meant for someone like that (including me)
