ONGAMIRA
Located 20 kilometers from Capilla del Monte, in the Comechingona language it means “energy of everything created”, and this is proven by all the people who visit it.
It is impossible to refer to Ongamira without evoking the dramatic story of the conquest and collective suicide of the Comechingones. A neighboring tribe, which lived at the base of Cerro Charalqueta (“hill of joy” in the native language), chose to take refuge at the top, where they were captured and brutally murdered. The Comechingones of Ongamira, on the other hand, confronted the Spanish and - after killing the invading captain Blas de Rosales in 1574 with their rudimentary weapons - were later cornered by the conquistadors. The last comechingones - along with their women and children - threw themselves into the void from the massif to avoid being captured and enslaved. After the tragic extermination it was renamed Cerro Colchiquí, which in the indigenous language means “hill of sadness.”
In the next chapter we will climb this impressive Hill.
Do not miss it!
