Online ads are getting ridiculous these days. Companies are pushing more and more ads, and ads now are offensive, scammy, and even malicious. In this video, we'll see just how bad the modern advertising landscape is, and if there's any hope for the future...

First of all, I must specify that I don't pay to stop ads because I don't care about them on Prime. However, concerning extortion for Prime, that couldn't be further from the truth of the matter. You get free Twitch subs each month including the prime gaming rewards. If you use Twitch you'll be technically saving money regardless of paying them. I've heard the echo of this sentiment enough to believe that because the drive to mantain or increase profits remains, but more people either block adverts of simply leave the site, the ads on these sites only become more intrusive and increase in volume, making the experience for people who don't use a blocker worse still, and mandating its use and popularity further, renewing the cycle. Mercy for those who still don't block ads...

I remember studying web advertising and all of the cool theories shared back on the day on how to engage the viewers with interactive ads and story telling… It all went to hell once Google automated the process and became a defacto gatekeeper. The ads nowadays are low quality and only used by small scammy companies. Bigger companies mostly just use YT. No one is getting value out of this except Google and Meta. The only right thing at this stage would be regulate the online advertising market. Advertising tracking should be made illegal too. Honestly, no consumer likes it or is ok with it.

Interactive ads, reminds me of an ad that I saw quite recently and that my adblocker didn't block. I was reading an article, there was an ad in the middle of it, and the text below it was blurred. It told me to answer the question to read the rest of the article, the question was about the price of something at a company, there were 3 options, when you chose one of them it said that the price is the lowest of the three options. Really interesting idea that I will remember for a while, but I wouldn't want to see more of it because that'd be really annoying.

@@k327dev the one they showed me and it was back in 2012, had like a video with a guy and you could choose dimb but funny things he could do. Another example they showed us where ads where with a guy and a bear. You could write what would happen next. Lastly I remember this funny one from Audi that said something along the line of “the longest ad allowed is 10 seconds. We only need 5 to show how fast our car is”. I don’t remember much details but back than everyone was excited thinking how ads could be funny, informative and interactive instead of just showing a stupid banner. Problem is that kind of advertising was expensive and often very specific to the website it was developed for. Those are still ads but at least they were meant to have some creativity. Instead ads are now just stupid banners based on what an algorithm thinks you like. Almost no human interaction required.

I’m Belarusian, but I watch some Russian-language channels. After KZbin disabled monetization for Russia, a major part of their viewers received an ad-free experience. Basically, every Russian KZbinr now uses Boosty (a Russian government-backed big tech product), which serves as an alternative to Patreon (since it’s blocked) and accepts Russian cards. So, in some places, this shift has already occurred.

It's gotten pretty disgusting with the nefarious techniques these corporations use. Recently, we decided to try Disney+'s ad-supported tier as we're on a budget. In the first few weeks, we thought "ah, that's not too bad", there was a single 20-30 second ad every 25-30 minutes or so. Then, as time went buy and we got comfortable with using the service, we started getting 1:20 minutes ads in the same time interval. I'm sure this is done on purpose to get people hooked and then make them pay more.

Ads were never non-intrusive, though. Heck, personally, the main reason I started using google sites back in 2007 was because they were nice and clean, while the alternatives were swarming with ads all over. Even before all that, ads on TV were always intrusive and anti-climatic (loud af). I don't know about other countries, but here in portugal we used to get 20 minute ad breaks every 20-30 minutes of content, and during christmas it was even worse: 30 minutes of ads every 15-20 minutes. It's why I stopped watching TV back then. Cable TV brought many more channels on that aren't that bad, but either way I only ever watch movies now, and always with a delay so I can fast-forward the ad breaks.

You know, if someone were to provide actually valuable, curated targeted ads, I wouldn't mind them and might even willingly go through them. There's an argument that a certain amount of voluntary "ads" would be a benefit as it would expose you to stuff you might truly be missing out on due to not knowing about it. If businesses don't want people to buy ad blocking services, then they should make better ads instead of making an advertising experience so insanely bad that people will pay for the privilege of avoiding it.

I found my current bank through an ad. It was relevant to the site I was on, and had an unintrusive, respectful presentation. So I give the sites I visit regularly a chance if they ask to turn off ad-blocker. Sometimes it stays off, sometimes not.

Ads were the final straw that pushed me to decide to use Linux instead of Windows. I spent 100 hours over 9 years turning off ads, telemetry, cortana, etc. But one day Windows had a straight up ad for LinkedIn on my desktop, turns out in an update I forgot to scour, they turned them on again. That was it, I spent like $180ish (can't remember) on Pro and it had done nothing but anger me and waste my time. Lunux Mint has been great XD

Of all the ads I’ve experienced, I’d say the worst one for me has to be the autoplay ads on fandom. Sometimes I’ll be reading through information for a game, and suddenly the autoplay ad at the top will change, and my perspective will be shifted back to the top of the page. Then I need to scroll back down, find where I was, and hope that doesn’t happen again for the next 2 minutes.

I remember what the internet was like in 2008, it was my first experience, the scale seemed colossal, it seemed like I didn't have enough time in my life to visit it all, and here I am in 2024, the internet is literally 2-3 sites where 99% of the information is located, as unfortunate as it is to realize, I could literally feel how much the internet has shrunk and become primitive compared to how I remembered it in those years.

Even KZbin? Anyways, I’m still surprised they didn’t just decide to bake the ads into the video server-side. Not much an ad blocker can do if the video being streamed itself has ads in it. That would probably result in the servers hogging a lot more resources, at least if they were to implement that with targeted advertising

If I paid for a product or service, then I feel absolutely no guilt, remorse, of shame for blocking ads. Period. If you insist on serving me ads even after having paid, then you have an unsustainable business model. It's the reason I've left so many platforms and even cancled KZbin Premium. A sponsor is still an ad. I shouldn't have to pay increasing fees to make up for other peoples poor decisions. The worst offender is monetary inflation which punishes individuals for being financially responsible all for the illusion of completely unsustainable infinite growth. I've had it.

I think there should be legislation to make companies liable for the ads they show. They shouldn't be responsible for content that users post, but since they make their money from ads, they should be responsible for the ads. If an ad Google serves is for a scam or malware, Google is the one liable for it.

I will never understand hpw people put up with ads. Possible people like me are the oddity. I exited the video and then entered it again and it gave me the same ad I felt angry and did not watch that video. The advertisement prevents me from watching the videos in peace. Sometimes there is an advertisement every minute that lasts 9 seconds. It is very annoying.

Somewhere around 2003 I bought a 1982 Honda CB900f. It was really cool but in very bad shape. I was amazed to find a website that someone had poured dozens of hours of effort into, giving detailed instructions on how to rebuild carburetors and other such things on just that kind of bike. I needed help beyond the repair manual and there it was for free. All the person who made the site wanted was a chance to tell people to read the bible. To be honest, I didn't do any extra bible reading, but I didn't at all mind seeing that this guy wanted me to. Anyway, just a story about ye olde days.
