Another tip I use is to read all the reviews. The customers, I feel, tend to be brutally honest. If an items runs large, or the pictured color is deceiving, they will let you know. Also, I love when customers include their height, weight, and the size they ordered if it worked. It helps me judge if I should go up a size or not.

Sheryl Augustson I do this too. Sometimes the complaints about an item are surprisingly helpful too. I have thick calves, and found the perfect galoshes by finding a pair where reviewers complained about how much room there was at the top of the boots.

I usually read the 3 or 4 star reviews first as they tend to have more information than a 1 or 5 star. So they liked the item but this is what they didn't like. Saved a lot of returns this way

Sometimes, but I’ve been increasingly noticing when I buy stuff like skincare or makeup online, a lot of people have been sent stuff through Influenster or a similar company “for consideration” and I don’t trust their opinions since they’re almost always positive. I know that a lot of sites delete negative reviews too. So that sucks. Not sure if it happens as much for clothes but it’s made me a lot more suspicious.

One thing I like to do is go on the Instagram account of the brand and look at their tagged photos. A lot of regular people will tag the brand when they are wearing an item of clothing from them and I find that it gives me a good example of what their clothing looks like on non-models without photoshop. Sometimes I see an article of clothing that I love on the model but I don't like the fit as much when I see it on a photo of a person who looks more like me and I can choose not to buy it based on that.

One thing I do before ordering is take my iPhone with the item onscreen to the closet. I check how the item will fit into the style and color scheme. Then I see if I already have similar items. Finally I do a count of how many outfits I can wear it with. This gives me a good idea how useful the item will be. I even do this with jewelry, shoes and purses.💕

One thing that’s really important to me when online shopping is to check the return policy prior to making any purchase. We try to avoid returns, but inevitably they may happen. The last thing I want to find out is that the retailer does exchanges only or charges a restocking fee. If I don’t like the return policy I don’t bother to shop there because I know it increases my chances of wasting money on an item that I won’t wear and won’t deal with sending back.

ASOS is absolutely the worst about this. They’ve sent me incorrect items and when I ask for it to be replaced, they say I have to pay to ship the item back. And then when they receive it, I can try to repurchase the item if it’s still in stock. Awful policy. I should know better than to purchase from a fast fashion site-never again.

Your suggestion of looking at the item in its other color choices is really important as you can definitely see details better on certain colors especially depending on the background the item is shown on. Doing this has often made me reject an item because I wouldn’t have seen certain details if I had only looked at it in the color I thought I wanted it in. Love your videos!

I was horrified when I heard recently that returned clothing items are often thrown away. I’ve seen so many, SO many, fashion bloggers talk about ordering things online in 2 or 3 sizes to check for fit that I wondered if that becomes encouragement to do the same. Just boggles the mind. I also care very much that clothes I buy launder well. I just can’t buy cheap clothes anymore and take the risk that the garment will be misshapen in a couple of careful washes. Ginny Burley , pre COVID -19, I could not stand it when those fashion bloggers would buy multiple sizes of one item and yet they try to market sustainable products but they are causing more trips by the post office or courier trucks to return those items .

This is why (in normal times) I return items to the store. I think there's a better chance that the item will be put on a rack or shelf for sale in the store.

In the UK it is illegal to sell items that have been returned, so larger companies follow the rule. Many items listed as used on eBay, by larger stores, are returned items that they purchase from the retailer. Many used items are actually new but have been 'tried on' and returned. This also happens with electrical goods, these are usually labelled as 'reconditioned'. If in doubt ask the seller.

Another good idea: Know your brands. Check your current wardrobe for what fits well, is made of a good quality fabric, and is sewn well. When you look for something from your list, start with the brand names you already know and like.

Very true, though brands can change over time. I used to buy Frye shoes almost exclusively. But then after a few years' gap, I went back to their website and saw that the reviews were dishing about how (allegedly) a lot of their boots are now manufactured in Mexico, and that the quality has gone down. Luckily, Frye addressed the problem: they stopped allowing reviews on their website. (Yikes.)

I have lost 102 pounds, and used to buy tent-like chothes that fit but had no other advantages. Your videos are really helpful to me in developing a fashion style for myself. Picking clothes that flatter me is not a skill set that I had, but seeing your many examples in your collection of videos of how to put outfits together is extremely helpful. Mary Brannigan I definitely need to see if I can find one in my area! I either end up with my clothes tight in the bust, or loose round the waist. I wonder if different countries design to different shapes? Here in the U.K., they seem to design for a pear shape.

You covered this more broadly, but I've saved myself a lot of time by determining what body type the model has (hourglass, apple, pear, inverted triangle, etc) and familiarizing myself with silhouettes that look good on my body type specifically. For some reason most models are inverted triangles which can make it tough to determine if the garment will look good on any other body type.

As a pear shaped petite woman, I learned the hard way to really notice the pose of the model. They tend to have wired poses with their hands covering the bust or waist area when they to try to hide gaping/awkward fitting garments. I usually love structured tops and dresses which show any fit problems pretty easily.

I like to buy jeans that have the tiniest bit of stretch so they can fit my hips and waist. But believe me, I am an ex-shopaholic and I have tried tens of pairs of jeans but never found he perfect pair. The best way I have found is to buy jeans that fit my hips and look very nice on (usually straight leg or mom jeans) and I tailor the waist to fit my tiny waist. Best of luck in your jean journey 😅

@@leneg3032 I have Levis mile high jeans in two colours and they are the perfect high waist jean made of strong denim. Before I had Fashion Nova ones as they were the only ones that fit my hip to waist ratio but they are kind of shitty quality (very thin and stretchy, kind of like jeggings but a bit stiffer)

I always read the customer reviews too, gives a much better insight into sizing and quality in many cases, in my opinion and reduces the risk of having to return.

Definitely! It really helps when the product photos are very stylized (free people, anthropologie) and reviews can give you a more accurate idea of the actual color or texture of the clothes. Also, customers that spent their own money tend to be more objective than bloggers or youtubers that are doing a collab with a brand or got the item as a gift.

Smaller retailers, particularly the sustainable brands will be very responsive and informative if you email to ask sizing questions. Particularly if you happen to fall between sizes. Sustainable brands like Wray, Esby, VETTA, Lacausa... their clothes are very well made in good material and most have a good range of sizes.

The biggest struggle for me is to get a Denim pant that has the hip & waist measurement for us Pear shape kind. Usually, it either fits my hip, too big for my waist, or it's my waist size but not the hip.

That's when having a tailor or seamstress helps alot to take in the waist area. I found a awesome pair of pants that fit my thighs but not great fit my waist and rear end. I took them in and now they look great

I also like to check the reviews on an item. On many websites, you can filter the reviews with your own size/height/weight etc. It's always great to have a bunch of reviews on an item from those with my own build. Thanks for another insightful video, Audrey!

Great video as always. Thank you. I love wearing natural fibers as well. However, polyester doesn't have to be a bad choice either. It always depends on the quality of polyester. I tend not to buy it but have made some purchases most of them almost 15+ years ago and I still wear those items on a fairly regular base and they look great. I also get asked a lot, if I have a new, jacket, pants, dress, ... and no, they just look the same even after washing them hundreds of times over the past 15+ years. They don't crease, no ironing needed and are great for travel and business, because of no wrinkles. They are not for warmer weather, but great for the climate, I live in. It is important to buy good quality. I do sew some clothes myself and learned a lot from my mum, who is a dressmaker, about quality fabric. Even silk, cashmere, etc. can be of lower quality and this should be a point of consideration as well while making a purchase decision.

I try to order from the same companies, because I get to know what fits me from them, and also, companies tend to stick to the same styles & palettes, so if their clothing has suited me in the past, it's likely that this season's clothing will too. I also look for companies that have online feedback from customers, as reading those comments can help narrow down my choice. Websites that include garment dimensions as well as the sizes they are intended for are also helpful, as is mentioning the size and height of the model wearing the clothes. Where possible, I support small companies, who have good fair trade policies. This helps reduce environmental impact, but also, an individual customer's feedback is more important to a small company than a large one, so you can have a greater impact on the world by choosing to invest in a small company that is thoughtful about it's business practice.

Thank you for your advices ! One of the thing I ALWAYS do, besides looking for the material, is to read the comment section when it's available! Sometimes, you see the mesurements, and in the comment section some customers advices you it's a bit smaller or bigger, it can help quite a bit sometimes ! So rule number one is to read the comments for me ! Then, look at the fabric, the sizing, and if you can, pictures ! Have a nice day!

While I do favor natural fabrics over synthetic ones, I think there are definitely exceptions. I would say to avoid cheap polyester for sure, but high quality polyester is a great investment. Some of my favorite blouses are 100% polyester, barely wrinkle, and have remained in great shape after dozens of wears (try the murphy blouse from aritzia for example)

I agree 100%. Taking a sewing class and learning to focus on my true measurements rather than some arbitrary number a retailer has applied (which I learned is called 'vanity sizing' when it is designed to make us feel smaller/thinner than we actually are and thus more likely to buy the garment) has made a huge difference to me. The whole sizing thing is so silly - we are the size we are no matter what number a company assigns to that size - yet I read reviews all the time where women get offended and mark down a particular garment saying "I'm a medium but I took a large in this - the sizing is off!" It makes no sense at all...

Lovely video Audrey!!! If I may be so bold as to add one more tip in regards to checking the sizing of an item: I find many retailers now have options in the reviews to indicate if something fits big, long, etc. As a petite girl, this has saved me many times!!!

Reading reviews of other purchasers filtered with my measurements in mind, helped me decide if an item will fit me well. Retailers do a good job providing sizing, but the length of the sleeves and the cut might be off.

I would also suggest figuring out the length of your torso. Why it’s important? I have a large D size cup and a fairly short torso, so high rise bottoms never ever look good on me, especially with tops tucked in, so if you have a short torso, mid or low rise will look much better on you, trust me. In addition i’ve got thick ankles and athletic calves, so it is very important for me to know those measurements of items I’m looking at online, if a retailer has them listed. Too many time I’ve been burned buying something which looked roomy on a model, but on me looks like a legging, I hate that!

Very interesting. I find natural fibres shrink eg wool, cotton and silk. And it’s a pain to be so careful with washing them as they are so delicate. Have to wash them separate from the usual clothes. Also have to be ultra careful not to dirty them especially when out at the restaurants. I actually find 100% polyester blouses very comfortable and the best thing is I don’t have to iron them they don’t crease much and they are also very affordable. I have a lot of floral printed blouses (favs are the high necked ones 😜) and they are all 100% polyester. I don’t perspire much even in the heat do they are just perfect for me. I match them with denim skirts and jeans and a stylish jacket over. But I must say I do love silk underwear they look good and very comfy. Otherwise I do find silk clothing very mature looking. Just my own opinion 😁.

I thought the same thing about Polyester - one of the allures of the fabric is that it is easy care and doesn't wrinkle. I love cotton and linen but they can be a nightmare trying to keep them fresh looking.

Maybe try looking for something with a blend of natural and synthetic fibres. I've found that Viscose can also be a good choice.

Grateful Princess of God, natural fibres like cotton shrinking is a sign of the company cutting corners. Before making an item, you’re supposed to preshrink the fabric by washing it in hot water. Only after that, do you cut your pattern from the fabric.

I always look for pants that contain elastane so that you don't get the weird stretch knee look that you get with some natural natural fibres. I like to do the same thing with tops because of the ironing thing too. They also tend to wash better and sit better.

My best online shopping is the high quality of clothing hangers. They are all made with metal so they are heavy. Also, I wanted to unify the types for all my hanging clothes. I also got a t-fal steamer. Investing the items to keep your current favourites nicer and longer is definitely my recommendation.

These are great tips. I do find that sometimes polyester is wrinkly and cheap but I have also found great quality polyester that looks and drapes beautifully and is easier to wash and care for.

Avoid anything in respect of which you are in between sizes or need to try before you buy. Particularly if a) the seller is in a different country and b) if you don’t have a local post office or courier hub.

Thank you so much Audrey, great tips! I believe I can call myself a professional online shopper and still there always are some things to learn. Here in Europe or in Sweden where I live, to return your purchase is free and very easy if you got a wrong size or color, or a quality is not like expected, or it's just doesn't look on you as you thought it will, which is normal because it's an online shopping you can't touch or try the items on. What I didn't know that some returns could be just carelessly thrown away! Is that true? I don' t think it is here in Sweden, because it's all about a conscious production, natural fibers or new once which are environment friendly to produce or even a second hand shopping or recycled materials are very popular here. I will apply your tips in the future for sure.

I used to end up buying items I didn’t need because they were on sale or caught my eye because I’d never really think about what my wardrobe was missing. Now that I keep a specific list, I am always much happier with my purchases.

As someone who has had way more failures than successes with online shopping I have pretty much given up. My lack of spatial awareness and understanding my shape meant I bought too many household items, fashion accessories, clothes that were too big, too small, poorly made, etc. I've realised I need to see and touch in order to know if it's truly right for me but with your wonderful tips maybe I can dip my toe into the online world - if only I had the $$ at the moment. I would recommend just reading the returns policy and shopping only at sustainable, high quality brands. Great video and tips! Agree with avoiding polyester like the plague. Unless it's for sports wear, that's when I make an exception because depending on the brand, better brands will use high quality polyster and with construction appropriate for sweat and vigorous activity. But for everyday pieces, definitely not. Not to mention that because it doesn't let your skin breath, cheap polyster exacerbates body odour. Never a good thing.

also important to study reviews of the product (check multiple sites) to see what others are saying about sizing, quality, fit, etc. And be sure to check the fabric care before buying - if you aren't interested in dry cleaning or hand washing items, you want to be sure the item is going to be easy care otherwise it will end up sitting in your closet unworn.

I usually find it especially helpful to look at other colours if the item is black or another dark colour. One thing that keeps me from purchasing unnecessary items is thinking if it will add anything to my wardrobe and complement my lifestyle. Yes, these boots might be pretty but I don't need another pair of black boots that I can wear to exact same outfits, I wear my other boots to. Unfortunately, my proportions are very outside the norm. I have really big boobs, wide hips, a tiny waist (two sizes smaller than my hips and bust) and on top of that I'm also very tall. You can imagine what nightmare finding trousers and jeans is. Therefore I can't rely on size guides and such, I always need to try stuff on. I know what generally looks good/bad on me, that way I can reduce ordering stuff that doesn't suit or fit me. But because of my body I oftentimes need to re-order an item in a different size, just to find out that the item doesn't fit my body in both sizes.

This advice is especially helpful given recent developments. I’m in a region still on lockdown and will probably avoid brick and mortar retail for a while. I need clothing though. Not only is it a necessity (to some extent) but certain pieces and accessories boost my mood. I feel so much better once I’ve changed into crisp jeans and an attractive shirt or blouse. It helps with numerous virtual calls too. Along with confirming sizing and material composition, I make sure the piece makes me smile 😊 Thank you!

I’d love to see a video about fit. Especially for upper body pieces. Where are the shoulder seams are meant to be, how close under the arms, how much room should be in the torso, the length of a shirt, length of sleeves etc. My friends tell me I wear my clothing too big but I think they often wear things too small. What’s the difference between “oversized” and “too big”? I know there’s a matter of opinion and preference but I’d like to know the intended or “proper” fit as a starting point. One thing I have learned from online shopping is Asian retailers size much different than Americans do. If you check where it is shipping from and it says China, buyer beware. Usually they won't fit and if you need to return it, they play catch me if you can. I have been online shopping for years. I stick with the American companies and I have peace of mind, that I can return things easily if need be. Great video!

From sewing quite a bit , you have to remember that an item that's stretchy will stretch different based on fabric type and will be a bit bigger in you based on stretch vs how it is laid flat.

As for stores I like, American Eagle can be really great to see different products on different bodies in order to get a better idea of if it will truly fit you, and Lulus usually has excellent reviews on their products so that you can see someone's usual size, pictures of the outfit on them and their comments regarding it.

I buy from a couple of retailers with hassle free in store return policy. I save a photo from each item I bought on my tablet into folders. I curate my purchases into return and keep by looking at the photos often. Every 10 items I buy, 8 or 9 items would go back to the retailers after pondering. By having visual I can purge pieces too similar or ive already had. I often return high quality items that are terrific bargain ($20 for a $400 retail item) because they don’t fit my body, style, or redundant. I don’t have the habit of reselling high end fashion items I bought at dirt cheap prices even though I can turn my finds into a source of income. It is a lot easier just to return them.

Color is probably one of the most important things to me - I recommend going to other site for accuracy. I found one on Notdstrom’s that was light pink, called Flamingo - I went to the actual website and that color was peachy coral - pretty but not what I wanted. I always look at fabric and am pretty shocked when I see tops that are over $100 that are 100% polyester. I could find that way cheaper somewhere else so I pass.

It is a dye very popular in silk products. I wonder why, but silks often have this dark blue/slightly violet shade, not often seen on other fabrics. I have like...3 silk dresses in this shade and i was not even looking specifically for it, it seems it is just popular blue silk tint.

From personal experience, I've begun a "30-day List" of items I "really need to have" from an influencer's video. If at the end of 30 days I still "need" it, and it meets my other criteria on fit, fiber, color palette, & other wardrobe pieces, then I either eliminate it, buy it, or keep it on my list for later. Some elements of garment construction are not visible on dark colors. White and other light colors show more details. You can see seams and stitching. I click on a picture of the lightest color the garment comes in to check seams, shoulders, any design elements, even the texture. Maybe I will buy that garment in black or navy blue, but I examine it on the white garment. Something I learned in art school…especially sculpture class. White shows more shadow and texture than all other colors.

Thank you for sharing Audrey. This was very helpful and I agree on the polyester thing. Mainly due to it not being breathable, but all other points you mentioned are so valid as well. I find garments of maybe rayon for example can still feel comfortable, are breathable enough and even feel kind of soft. Even when being intentional and buying/shopping for vintage pants/skirts they can be from a nice silk or wool and still will have it. In one of those last purchases I ended up cutting it out.

Or are they saying a shirt''s circumference around the busline is exactly that measurement?
