For some intrinsic reason unknown, I have naturally liked the sound of the 6th note. This explains it well.

Cheers, Peter. It's all a question of context and what vibes/mood you want to create or what chords you're playing over. The melodic minor is used a lot in jazz - especially the 7th mode (altered scale/diminished whole tone/super locrian). The melodic minor isn't really used that much in funk or rock.
