I took some lessons with a guy and asked him this exact question. “I can play bass, but how do I come up with a part to play over a specific chord progression?” He put on a metronome and said “okay, play something,” which wasn’t very helpful. What I really wanted was the thought process of an experienced player to see how they would do it. This video is great to show the building blocks and how you can incorporate them while also not overplaying.

Hi Dan, I choosed you as my teacher since 3 years and had learned a lot from you...but...in april 23 I fell and broke my right handjoint that never came back to be normal...I had to throw away my massage certificate but was only panicking of never being able to play bass anymore but 4 months after I fell I started again to play...so now, almost 2 years later, I can say that bassplaying healed my hand. All my fingers can move freely again even though they are more stiff than before which makes me play even better because louder, as my fingers are now like little sticks while before they were too soft...I am just happy that it wasn't my left hand, I think my left hand, in that condition, would never be able to come back to play the left hand's job...I did not follow any teacher since then as I was focussing on making my fingers move...but now I am going to follow your lessons again...am right now on funk and reggae and every music that inspires me to play it...thank you so much for being the best teacher

Dan, I am truly grateful for your work, energy and inspiration. I have been following for the one year now. I am working on developing confidence to build bass lines and chord progression from the chords in major and minor. I would like to clearly see the flow of the chords / arpeggios in major and minor scale. Maybe you have already addressed a lesson where you show example of bass lines from chords from both scale. If so, would you mind to redirect me to your previous videos about that? Thank you for your guidance and patience.

Brilliant! In one video you incorporated everything that we should learn/know as a bassist. This is where I’m at with learning and with a LOT of patience and persistence, I’m satisfied with saying development is happening.

You are the man, Dan! A tip a guitar player/bass player/teacher gave me is to explore the half step interval on those major 7 chords. It really makes it sound pretty. Not a criticism, just an aside. LOVE that bleeping Ibanez!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Dan, Thx a lot for such good bass lessons. May I ask you to do some videos on how to read and play rhythm. This is hard when trying to be really be in place for some music types like reggae or complicated bass lines. How to count, how to accent on good times, etc.

I'm taking your "Music Theory For Bass Players" course - just started. But in this video I did not understand why E sounds good here and why do we use E lydian. Is that something you cover in Music Theory For Bass Players" course?
@OnlineBassCourses24 күн бұрын
I think I do cover it. This is one of those situations though where you don’t need to fully understand it. Just remember this: if you see a major 7th chord from outside the key, try a Lydian over it. It will probably (almost always) work! Then you’ll get used to that.
@demiadisa716228 күн бұрын
Extremely random question but how do you record your microphone audio and then have the drum loop come in and out of the recording seamlessly?
@OnlineBassCourses26 күн бұрын
The audio is separate from the drum loop in Logic. I mute the vocal mic which is time consuming in the edit but there you go!
@demiadisa716225 күн бұрын
thank you.

Hi, your lessons are so good and useful! Thanks a lot..❤ just one question.. why did you choose E lydian and not for instance E ionian for your E in the progression?
@M2Mil7er28 күн бұрын
You can play E Lydian over an Emaj because they share chord tones so won't be dissonant, and because Emaj is outside of the key, E Lydian has some common tones with the song's key, helps to guide it back to resolution.
@flaviogarcia901028 күн бұрын
@@M2Mil7erthanks for your explanation. Now I get it
@OnlineBassCourses26 күн бұрын
See below! Try it. It just sounds wrong. The Lydian mode seems to fit well over a major 7th chord from outside the key.
