Today we are learning how to create passing lanes while dribbling. This is an advanced technique that most players don’t do. This video is for attacking players looking to make that killer pass when the time is right.
Key Points:
Key Point #1 - Dribble at an angle going across the field.
Key Point #2 - Pass the ball into space, in front of your attacker running onto the ball.
Not so hard the goalie can come out and get it, but hard enough so your attacker doesn’t have to slow down to receive the pass.
A very important element is that your attacker runs across the back line instead of just backing up in the direction you are dribbling towards.
Key Point #3 - Shout and point to your teammate where to run. Say something like “Go” or “Make a run”.
Your teammate probably won’t make this run until you pass and shout at them to go. Maybe talk to them prior to the game and tell them that if you see me dribbling across the field then make a run in the opposite direction and I’ll find you.
Key Point #4 - Pass the ball with the inside or outside of your foot. You make the call.
By using the outside of your foot your pass will be more deceptive. Which means sneaky.
If you turn and use the inside of your foot the defenders could read the pass quicker because of your body positioning.
Key Point #5 - DO NOT try this angled dribble and pass every time you have the ball.
Yes, be creative but by keeping it simple and completing your passes regularly great plays like this will just happen naturally. You won’t even think about them, you will just do it.
Equipment Needed:
For this exercise you will need a few balls and four cones.
Exercise Player Can Do:
An exercise we can do to practice. I’ll show you one exercise with a partner and one without.
The first is without a partner. Dribble from the start cone to the second cone 5 yards ahead of you. At the second cone I want you to look up and realize you have 10-20 yards of space ahead of and the defense is dropping. In a game this is your cue to start dribbling at an angle.
Dribble at an angle to the third cone and when you are close to the cone, pass the ball to the fourth cone which should be in the opposite direction you are dribbling to and about 15-20 yards ahead of you. Imagine that cone is the space in front of your attacker running onto your pass.
Light jog back, then repeat until you run out of balls. Do a few sets.
Don’t forget to point and shout when your teammate should make their run.
If you have a partner then set up an extra cone, have them back up in the direction you are dribbling and then make their run forward onto your pass right when you make it.
Do this a few times and switch with your partner.
After you do a few sets change up the angles and create different exercises. For example put the cone on the opposite side of the field and dribble going the other way. You mix it up.
What Player Could Be Doing Wrong:
Some things that could be going wrong. If your passes aren’t getting completed often enough you might be forcing it. Don’t force this type of pass. If the gap to pass it between the defenders isn’t big enough, then don’t try it. In that situation keep it simple and keep the ball moving.
The killer pass will come with patience.
Bonus Tip:
Only do this type of pass in your attacking third. This way if you don’t complete the pass the odds of the other team scoring right away aren’t as good as if you tried this pass in your defensive third and failed.
If you try this pass and it doesn’t work so what! Just react positive and get back on defense. Not even the best pros in the world complete 100% of their passes.
