Welcome to another Treasure of the Petersen Museum Vault presented by ‪@Hagerty‬. Like a majority of other Chrysler Corporation dream cars of the period, the rakish Plymouth Explorer was built by Carrozzeria Ghia of Turin, Italy. Its hand-formed coachwork was distinguished by carefully sculpted contours and accentuated by horizontal spears on the sides that were painted white to contrast with the striking metallic green body color. Exhaust pipes projected from the taillight pods. Special interior features included leather upholstery, fitted luggage that stored behind the seats, and radio controls that were concealed by an opening panel on the dashboard. Built on a modified 1954 Plymouth chassis, the Explorer was powered by a stock 230-cubic inch, 103-horsepower six-cylinder engine.

Refreshing cool green color, and the fact that it did not go down with the ship that brought it to the USA is a Plus+.

Fantastic car, and I really do appreciate you sharing it with us. But it sure would've been nice to see more of the interior, the trunk, and hear it run. If Jay Leno owned this car, we would've seen & heard all of that........including an actual ride-along as he would drive it.

@@howabouthetruth2157 Joke, but it was strange that one of the two Mopar hemis at the time didn't make it into the Plymouth line.

@@stevebot Plymouth never got a hemi because they wanted to upsell you into a Dodge, Desoto, or Chrysler. Plymouths were plain Jane transportation. Perfectly acceptable, nothing special. Although the late 40’s and early 50’s Plymouths had an incredible build quality. The 4 or 5 I’ve been in were really well assembled, quiet, smooth, no rattles, and very nice to drive.

@jamesslick4790
@jamesslick4790 3 жыл бұрын
Any "boutique facility for hand built cars" under "Plymouth" would have been labeled "Imperial", as Plymouth was a Chrysler brand, and it was Chrysler's "low price" brand at that. It would be the same as a boutique facility for hand built cars under GM would be within Cadillac, Not Chevrolet.

I owned a 54 Plymouth, " handed down " from an older sister, I thought it was THE ugliest car to ever wear a Plymouth badge if not THE ugliest Chrysler product ever built. The bulges on the sides, above the wheel openings appear on the front fenders of my car but are nearly invisible on the rear fenders. Had my car carried A LOT more of this car's essence, I might have liked it more.

I bought my Grandmother's 1953 Plymouth in 1963. It had 13,000 miles on it. The '53 and '54 shared a lot of Fugly features, so I'm right there with you, Mr. Kerr.... Main differences were the parking lights and taillights.

The hand made status is evident by the wavy lettering of all the insignias. The overall look is very Norseman-like, which is understandable because Ghia made both this car and the ill-fated Norseman. The back window and trunk area has elements of the Tucker '48. Just a beautiful car.
