I was so close to finishing this with more guesses remaining than I started with. It came down to the top left cell and I picked C instead of G so finished with 8 guesses left over. My strategy was quite different. Starting with RAISE, I looked for cells where common letters crossed and chose RANTS for the second word. I think this might work better in this version.

Hey! Maker of Squardle here. My playtesting agrees with this strategy. If I *do* have to hunt for new letters (due to a lack of yellow and red) I like doing so on guesses #4 and #5 instead of #2 and #3, as this means I have searched for the letters I did get clues for in columns and rows 1-3. Given 8 guesses until you need to have solved a word it's typically columns/rows 1-3 that's where you have to get something right. Yes, risk of getting game over *is* something I have to consider in Weekly Squardle. As the person who's played the most weekly boards of anyone: My win rate's not bad, but it's not 100%. The games I've lost have all been the ones where I threw out 3-5 quick words covering most of the alphabet, and then not having gotten enough information to start solving full words once I come back around on guesses 6-8.

@@furbyfubar Nice to hear from you. You've created a very interesting variant. I used the same stratagy this week and whilst luck was a little less on my side, I still finished with 7 guesses remaining. Before I started the first weekly game I read your notes and took heed of the advice not to go all out with the options that gave the most variety of letters too soon. I tend to do this somewhat with the daily games anyway; looking for the red, yellow and orange markers and trying to estimate or eliminate cells that might accommodate them. The 2nd and 4th rows and columns can be pretty useful in this respect. Anyway, thanks for the game and the reply.

This looks fun. Definitely going to try the next one. At 22:55 you could have finished in three moves: Either MEDAL or PEDAL down column 4, then ENEMY in col 5 and finally either GRIME or GRIPE across the top (completing MEDAL/PEDAL in case the first guess was wrong).

You should try my strat of Audio Cuter Nymph Cwtch Grass Yes, there are repeated letters but you cant really get 25 different letters 😀 18 different letters and every vowel and half of the frundikots (frundikots are vowels that arent really vowels) All 6 vowels and 2 of the 4 frundikots also common double s for squardle Maybe improve the grass cuz idk what

Spoiler Break ↓↓↓↓↓ This should be safe... When you were going for the 4th column/row with only 2 guesses, if you guessed medal or pedal you would have filled the last row for a bonus guess at minimum (SHY_Y only has one possibility), and then gotten all 4 possible words guessing enemy in the last column (rows 2-4 and column 5). You were never going to get the first word because you were still missing the first letter and needed one more guess for that. It makes sense that as long as you know you're getting at least one word solved to go for getting as many letters of another word in that guess if you're reasonably sure of the letters (as would have been the case here).

17:26 to help declutter, you could also hide clues that are used already. Like the a in the first column. You have it already so you can hide it and all the rest of the clues are what you need to use still.

I failed it when I did it earlier this week. I don't think I even got a single word correct. I feel like it should give you 10 guesses to start so you could at least do 2 full laps. Oh well, it is what it is. I'll try a different approach next week see how it goes.

At 16:53 I had guessed that the down word was IVORY and the 5th row across would be SHYLY. Haven't finished the video yet, so don't know if I'm right. But those were my guesses :) Edit: At 19:26 he did guess it! Edit 2: I was right about IVORY!🥳 And if it was IVORY, then the 1st row across would be something like GRIPE (which I couldn't know for sure because he hasn't guess a P yet) Edit 3: So I was wrong about the P, but I also had something like PEDAL in mind. His guess was very clever!

I don’t know how to phrase this but the something to think about when choosing starting words in Squardle could be to use a ‘bad’ letter where the words cross. If “Hater” is the first word, H would be that letter. Sound uses good letters but the O only gets used once but is a common letter.

I knew there weren't any Hs there, but the H was helping me check for Hs in the last row and last column, and actually did help me find that there was an H in the last row.

I very much enjoyed watching to solve that! I spent so much time getting the Weekly Squardle update out the door, and I'm really happy with how it plays. Also glad to see you make use of the "Guess"/"Certain" for notes. Another update that likely came out after you recorded this added settings for auto-hiding of hints that are black, green, and/or repeated in a square, so you can avoid a bit of the bookkeeping of clicking hinds without thinking to avoid information overload on the screen. It felt really good to get to take down those two Post-it notes from my board of "planned updates", since they have been much requested and turned out quick to implement; especially after having spent several week on the Weekly Squardle update that no one had asked for... Some strategy advice for the weekly boards: At 22:29 you have unsolved squares in just 3 columns and in all 5 rows and you are considering what direction you should solve in first. Considering the order the guesses being entered would go the columns could be guessed in just 3 guesses, so I think it would make sense to go with them. In your position the top square could be both P and M, but you could have guessed either without it mattering for your final score; if you had guessed incorrectly you could still solve that square on the same guess as were you have to guess that G. At the end you said that the last guess doesn't give bonus guesses in Weekly Squardle. This is only true if you green exactly one gray square with the final guess as that solves the (on weekly boards) minimal 1 row and 1 column. Any word solved in addition to that, even if it's on the final guess still gives bonus guesses. As you solved 3 words with your final guess you did get 1 bonus guess for that. In non-weekly Squardle the minimum number of solved lines for the winning guess is 1, so solving additional lines at the same time will still give bonus guesses there. The reason for this rule is that it's more exciting to say that you won on your *final* guess than having rules where winning with the smallest margin still always gives "1 or 2 guesses remaining".

So in this game, I gather the vowel guessing words (audio, adieu) should be used in the 2nd and 3rd columns as that is where vowels tend to lie in most words, and letters like H, R, N & L will provide more hits than usual, especially as the last words (bottom & right) with E.
