The last New Jersey Kmart is closing. Shoppers in Bergen County are ready to snatch up one last blue light special -- even the actual blue light. That leaves only two Kmarts still open in the entire U.S.

When I got married in 2015 my wife and I went on a road trip. We found a Kmart in Alabama...Talk about Nostalgia. It even looked like the 90s in there lol. Had those handheld Tiger electronic games still. I wish I would have taken video footage.

That was our K-Mart before we left Bergen County and NJ altogether. This time of year, my kids and I would go back to school shopping. I have really fond memories of that store, and didn't think to ask my friend to get a souvenir for me. Terribly sad.

And our local Kmart is busy Saturdays and Sundays. Most times you have to queue up in a 10 deep line waiting for a check out. Love the bargains there, the furniture is pretty good too.

Where my kmart stood is now becoming a target, and what was next to it was a Toys R'us i bought many from both and a radio shack that was there in the 2000's to late 2000's stopped as i bought more and more from else where to mainly online. Online business didn't kill Kmart if that was the case why is Walmart still successful. Kmart was just incredibly mismanaged. ShopYourWay didn't help either. The program guaranteed profit losses.

It's amazing they made it as long as they did considering their business has been on a decline since 1992. The fact that it's taken over 30 years for them to actually fully die out is a testament to what a powerful company they once were at their peak.

The last K-Mart will probably be the one in Bridgehampton, NY and will probably close sometime next year or in 2025. The other in Miami (West Kendall area) is operating on the former garden shop as the main building was partially demolished and rebuilt as an At Home store. Since it’s about half the size of a Dollar Tree or Dollar General, it probably won’t last past 2024.

Yep. It started even earlier than the online shopping boom too. Kmart was slow to adopt software for supply chain management in the late 80s/early 90s, which gave Walmart and Target an advantage over them that they were never able to recover from.

Was sad to see Kmart go. I still went regularly to Kmart until all the ones near me closed. The one i visited opened up in the late 70s went there as a kid and as an adult. The store was somewhat rundown but serviceable didnt care still went all the time.

It’s sad that he Kmart going on a business but my family still has one single Kmart left in existence today. My Grandma in Bushnell, Florida still has the Miami Florida Kmart. I have heard a rumor that one of the Kmart were being sold and that they were moving out of the store and moving into their garden center and their whole entire store was becoming the size of the garden center, but they were remaining open And still staying open as a garden center size Kmart. I’m not sure if that is the Miami Florida location. I can’t wait to go visit my grandma for Christmas and then go visit the last remaining Kmart store by her house in Bushnell Florida in Miami surprise that her Miami Kmart is still standing in alive even if it’s now in the garden center and doesn’t own the entire store anymore.

I was wondering about Kmarts. They had been around for years, but I also remember when they were closing some of the stores. During the Bush era I had heard about Kmarts closing. They started closing some of the stores in Manhattan. The Kmart on 34th bet 7 & 8 might still be around but they closed the one on Broadway near Astor Pl. In NJ Kearny/Passaic, has one but I wonder if that one has closed down. They were doing a lot of reconstruction in that area building it up so a lot of those factory buildings and stores around it were either torn down or repurposed into either housing or shopping centers.

@@DriftyAlison0 You mean Manhattan right and not Miami? That was a typo right? It's 34th St in NYC. Manhattan is one of the 5 boroughs. NY is the state and NYC is the area below that connects NJ and PA to NY. NYC contains all the 5 boroughs in that one area. I checked and it shows it's still open. I think the only reason it hasn't died is because it's connected between the streets, the subway and 34th St Penn Station. Which like Grand Central connects the NJ Transit, Amtrack and the subway system. So with all the businesses and traffic that passes through is probably why it's still around. But the online system is useless now.

Kmart took their customers for granite. I even had a store manager from Kmart who was an assistant manager at the time back around 1990 look down his nose at me and say well if you don't like the way you run things here why don't you go shopping at Walmart. I did and then one day I saw what his qualifications at Kmart let him to be, a department manager at Walmart. After Kmart closed I guess he needed a job so he went to the rival company of Walmart. They only gave him a department manager position and he did not last long. I like the Blue light special. We needed to keep Kmart and Sears around, atleast keep Walmart from going out of control. So it is sad that Kmart was unable to turn it around and now having only two stores they are just basically a couple of mom-and-pop operation spirit I mean after all do they still have the corporation management team. Do they have distributing warehouses that they own? Hundred dollars that Blue light special sign they stop doing that blue light special I thought back in the 90s brought it back about 10 years or so ago and got rid of it again. Good for him getting that light.

That’s how I feel about Sears, which we all know was bought out by Kmart. I worked at Sears for 3 months in 2012 when I was 18. Everyone treated me horribly and even made me cry once. One of the female managers was jealous and made critical comments on my looks. She got told off by one of the employees btw, but it didn’t change anything. They looked down on me because I was a teenage girl. They even talked their positions up as managers thinking they were kings or something 😂. Welp, that Sears closed down only a few years after I left and all those prideful and conceited managers lost their jobs. Good riddance!

We still have Kmart here in Australia. Unlike America, ours is doing very successfully, even beating some of our major department store chains. Our one down under is a little different to yours though. The quality of ours is so shit, but so cheap, so hence everyone goes their to buy clothes & toys for their kids that will probably grow out of it in 6 months. Then we just hand it down or sell it in an Op-shop and buy more shit from Kmart. Very successful down under. The Australian Kmart is owned by Coles-Myer group who are their parent company and also own Target in Australia. Kmart has been so successful that its Parent Companies higher-end subsidiaries, Target and in some cases, even Myer itself are struggling to compete with the Kmart subsidiary, with many Target stores been con verted to Kmart. In Australia, Coles is a grocery store, Myer is a premium department store, Target is mid-range and Kmart is all the cheap shit.

Sad Kmart is gone and out of business! 😭 I used to work for them I miss my job, my store and the people I worked with. Thanks to Eddie Lampert and his incompetence and deliberate sabotaging ways he killed two iconic retailers that will be nothing more than a bitter sweet disappointing memory. The clown ruined them by deliberately not investing in the stores stripping it’s assets and closing its doors to sell the stores off to new developers. The stores had potential and could of had relevance and yes they were in trouble before he came along but the stores were still salvageable and he made everything worse. Oh and don’t worry the other 2 WILL close eventually it’s just a matter of time and what’s left in the warehouses. They will be gone by the end of the year and if not they will be in the beginning of next year and I’m estimating conservatively. Total disappointment and it was ALL uncalled for thanks to the sleaze bag and his hedge fund. RIP Kmart and Sears.

So sad to see Kmart disappearing like this, I hope it’ll pull a Toys R Us and at least revive itself outside the US but I doubt it, even though they were out of date and old I liked their stores and the retro vibe they had just like the OG Targets with the popcorn smell, the red carpets, and the neon signs. Kmart had a distinct smell to me not plastic but something better smelling, their food courts I used to get slushies and hotdogs from, going there to buy new shoes for the school year, and buying gifts for Christmas it was a unforgettable place even if it wasn’t the best store to go to it had its own vibe and it holds a special place in my heart. It’s sad to see it go it really is just like Sears that also had a similar smell and was where my parents bought most of the appliances for our house they’re both on their way out and it’s very sad to see them go. It’s gone from 3 Department Store giants to just 2 and while they each still have their own vibes now it’s just not the same as back in the day 😞😞😞

K-Mart's Christmas dept was much better than Walmart's. Their Halloween was better, too. They had a lot going for them. Martha Stewart had tons of quality stuff with K-Mart for years. I believe I remember seeing an entertaining book from Martha, there in K-Mart, way back in about 1987. Their 'Back to School' was probably better, too. THEIR GROCERY WAS NOT. Nor was their amount of space for different selection and offerings. I believe it was mainly that the Walmarts turned into 'SuperCenters' and they had such a big grocery side that was just so very spoiling for shoppers always looking for convenience. I think this was maybe more-so the reason than the 'online-ism'. Because what chain hasn't been effected by On-Line King Amazon? And so many still exist in spite of Amazon. My Mom did great! She worked at K-Mart for 13 years. Most of the time with arthritis in her knees. -In Sporting Goods and Automotive. We were there all the time. And it is a piece of our everyday way of life now leaving us. WAIT! EDIT! Mom has informed me that she worked at our Beckley K-Mart for FIFTEEN YEARS & six months, NOT 13 yrs. I remember all of the hard-working friends of Mom's and she enjoyed working there. They didn't know her name was 'Eunice', and it's not, really. But wait till she finds out I called her Eunice in front of a million people. [pray for me, won't you.]

Kmart's decline had little to do with the internet they started the decline in 1989.They rarely restocked new items,they had low quality products, Target and Wal-Mart coming into the picture, many of them were not clean,they rarely renovated and stopping the random blue light specials. One reason why I liked shopping at my local kmart before it closed was a reason why people didn't like to go in. It was a time machine, where else was I able to buy blank VHS tapes? In the electronic section in the video game. I'll you know where they have kiosk where you can play a demo of a video games they had Nintendo 64 hooked up in the year 2015. PS In australia kmart is thriving because it doesn't have those issues.

Outside the US Territories, Kmart still exists on Long Island and near Miami, Florida. In the US Territories, one in Guam and 3 in the US Virgin Islands. That makes 6 remaining Kmarts in the general United States remaining (states and territories combined).
