Mhm Bob even when you haven't been through it personally, black peoples saw it or experienced it one way or another. Mayb grandma told you a story. Mayb you wanted or needed for nothing but you saw your Ma or pa going with out for you. That's struggle. If your black and you haven't been exposed in anyway at all you will lack soul. You will talk white too. Nothing wrong with that. I'm right in the middle. 🤘🏾

+Doo fy Not only do not all blacks sing with soul, not all blacks can sing. I say that as a music education major. Not every black has the same timbre, but it is a common trait that blacks get characterized as having a darker color to the voice. It honestly depends on the singer, although we tend to emulate what we hear/listen to.

In my experience, MOST black singers' voice sounds "thicker", where as other ethnicities, sound "thinner". It's hard to explain, but there are only a few non-white singers I can think of that "sound black"; Joss Stone, Teena marie, Bobby Caldwell, Lisa Stansfield, Michael McDonald, and Jon B

You're misinterpreting what she's saying I think and what black people tend to mean when we say the struggle usually. She means cultural struggle. The black culture(s) are primarily derived from struggle through slavery, Jim Crow, the Civil Rights era, disproportionate poverty and simply the feeling of being a minority that many feel. This is the environment that bred the cultures that are considered black in America. So even if the individual didn't go through struggle, they are likely heavily influenced by a culture or cultures that were born in those harsher conditions known as the "struggle".

The woman is unbelievably rude. Yes, black people have a voice that doesn't sound "forced" perhaps when singing soul, but let everyone do what they want! "Struggle" has nothing to do with race or voice, it's a personal thing. A black person can have had a good life while a white had a hard one.

I think this video is pretty dumb overall and kind of insulting. I mean, how can you invite specific guests to your studio and then call it a random selection of singers? It's also asking the wrong question. There's truth to the idea that different cultures have different sounds, both in language and music. So if you define the sound of "having soul" as "sounding black"... then it's not surprising that black people are more likely to sing with soul. Different sounds and instruments have their origins all over the world. The precursors to the electric guitar (American) was the vihuela (Spanish) which was based on the lute (European) which was based on the oud (North African). The banjo is based on an African Instrument. The accordion, so closely associated with German polka music, originated in Asia. And pretty much every culture around the world invented drums and flutes independently of one another. Typically, music rooted in West Africa is very percussive and uses many more complicated polyrhythms than classical European music, where the musical tradition is largely rooted in the church. To say white people don't sing "with soul" IS pretty bigoted. We (yes, I'm white) just don't usually sound the same as most black people, and you may interpret one style as preferable to you, which is fine. There are also white people out there who really can sing with "soul" the way black people can, they're just fewer and further between because it's a sound more closely associated with another culture. I personally like singer-songwriter stuff (typical white guy I know), but I find that I prefer the sound of women singers. That doesn't mean I hate men or think they're worse at singing, just my opinion. Music is always changing and evolving and people borrow from other cultures as well as those that came before them. I do recognize that appropriation can be a problem, but as long as the culture isn't being used as a prop or a joke it should be fine. It's stupid to nit-pick differences in culture and expression and claim it's proof that one is superior to another. It's only proof that they're different. And you're allowed to prefer one sound, but it doesn't mean you have to completely invalidate another. It's not a zero sum game where there's only so much "soul" to go around. As a musician I can promise you that your typical classical musician has just as much soul as a gospel singer, they just express it differently.

Sandra Rose I got them all right and that's exactly what they meant by black singers sounding differently from other races. Plus, our voices are generally different. It's not a bad thing or a downplay against other races. It's just a note of the differences. I don't see how people see that as wrong.

***** You're saying people take offense to you as a race, but you're the one using terms like "we" and "them"... as for what Teddy and Kanishia were saying in this video, I do agree that that black people often have more soul in their voice, I don't take offense to that nor do I think anyone is trying to outdo anyone or take that voice away... what I was offended by wasn't anything describing the talent... it was Kanishia saying only black people have struggle and all white people are privileged and have to fake struggle... which is not always the case. I'm not saying there aren't plenty of cases where that is what it is, but she was acting like nobody else has ever truly suffered and that's bs. Even when she was complimenting other people there was always that backhanded "yeah you're good but you still have to fake ever having lived through anything real" to it.

Delete this if you want but it NEEDS to be said. That lady is so incredibly racist against non-black people it is insane. “They don’t have that struggle in their voice”. Look lady, EVERYONE struggles. Not just black people. EVERYONE. There is this thing called equality. That doesn’t mean “oh some people who are mostly all dead now did some bad stuff so we’re gonna make you suffer for it”. No. It means everyone is one and the same no matter your color, gender, race, or anything. The parking ticket thing, oh my god that is so RUDE. I do agree that the tone in singing voices between the different colors vary greatly, it’s a fact. But that has NOTHING to do with “struggle” or “privilege”. I’d say she is very ignorant and needs to learn to keep her trap shut but that would be “racist” so I cannot. However, if she said it then it would be fine. People need to open their eyes and realize that yes, bad things happened and still happen to colored people. But bad things happen and still happen to white people too. You are not exempt from the societal rules called RESPECT FOR OTHERS. Learn it. Period.

I like Teddy and how he gives his opinions without insulting anybody, but apparently according to Kanishia if you're not black you have no soul and you're automatically privileged and never had any struggles. Wish I had known that before I lived out these past 30 years. Sidenote, hats off to all these amazing singers of all races.

BrillyanceUndfyned First of all, don't call me sweetie... I'm not some dumb little woman... second of all I don't need to lighten up.. I even said I enjoyed the video... the singing was dope and Teddy was cool as hell... but I do have a right to disagree with the way Kanishia came off. Lastly, if you were attempting to make an ironic joke with the sarcasm, you failed. You just furthered stereotypes. And yes, stereotypes exist for people of all races, ethnicities, socioeconomic, and political groups... doesn't mean we should just perpetuate them. How do we expect people to come together or appreciate one another if it's the person pointing out the discrimination that gets lambasted and not the person discriminating? I'm sure if it was a white person stereotyping black people you wouldn't just say "get over it, it's free entertainment."... and I wouldn't want anyone saying that to you either. So please don't say it to me.

I may not have had to face certain racial issues, but you do not know me personally, nor do you know my life story... and while I don't have to tell you jack shit about myself I will GLADLY school you if I need to little boy... And I'm calling you a little boy because looking at your Google+ account I can see you're an 18 year old punk who degrades and objectifies women and feels PRIVILEGED and ENTITLED to do so and likes to jump to conclusions about people... so yes please, tell me about the life I'VE lived and you haven't and fill me in on this so called privilege when all you can say is that I was born white. Go on...
@danidynamite2
@danidynamite2 9 жыл бұрын
Well, for starters, my fathers have committed no crimes against black people... my mother's family did not move to the States til WW1, and from what little my mother knew of my father, he was first generation Italian-American... My family wasn't here for slavery, sorry that can't be held against me. And while I will admit there are prejudiced people out there and there are disadvantages in the academic and employment arenas, not every white person is trying to brainwash anyone. If anything, I'd say the reason little African kids would run up to a white person over a black person is not because of a perceived God complex... it's because it was BLACK people who sold slaves to the Americans for money. And WHITE Northerners who fought against their Southern brothers to end it. And again, you assume I'm privileged and entitled based on the fact that you only see one group of people as being discriminated against... black people. But outside of the poverty and abuse and homelessness and struggle I grew up in, I am disabled, as was my mom, and ours are not physically identifiable disabilities... which puts me at an automatic disadvantage, both as being seen as a burden to society and in terms of what I am capable or incapable of... not to mention the fact that "invisible" disorders as they are called are often mocked, abused, and generally not believed, meaning people assume I can do more than I can and punish me for the fact that I can't live up to that. It's proven fact that people born into severe poverty are at a disadvantage and have to work twice as hard to begin with, add to that being born to a single mother and deadbeat dad... but being disabled on top of that, I'd have to work even harder than that... if I even could... to get half as far as the rest of my peers, regardless of their color. And, while you are able to do twice the work to overcome your unfair disadvantage, I am not. The stress of this disadvantage caused my mother to commit suicide after decades of simultaneously trying to get the help she needed to function and being told by society there was nothing wrong with her. So again, you have no right to call someone entitled or privileged just because they're at a different starting point. Do I think it's fair that black people were enslaved, or are discriminated against or mistreated, no. But it's not fair when it happens to me either, nor is it fair of you to dismiss my suffering and disadvantage because of what you SEE. You are young and bitter and I understand that, but you assume I won't try to see your side of things because you assume all white people are the same and we are not. (Speaking of which, will you try to understand my point or just stay bitter?) And you assume there is no other group at an automatic disadvantage and you are again wrong. And you are way too bitter to be a weed smoker... at least around me. I use that shit to mellow out.

U can literally hear the difference. We can sit here and be politically correct all we want but you can't deny that there is a distinct difference between the two. Even Adele has that 'forced soul', that if you closed your eyes and heard her sing vs a black girl, you could clearly hear the difference between the two.

Let's just clear this up! Because these comments are getting on my nerves. When she says "struggle" she's referring the the FEEL, she does not MEAN THIS LITERALLYYYYY. When she says "privileged" it's a clearly joke (and clearly lack of a better word), just correlating it to as she said more lighter and airy sounding. WE ARE AWARE that the sound of your voice has absolutely nothing to do with RACE. BUT let's all gather up our common knowledge and understand the roots of SOUL, GOSPEL, R&B, etc., type of sounds are our BACKGROUND; blacks are the originators of these sounds and feels. If you are raised and rooted into something(esp culturally), it will rub off on you and you will adopt into your musicality. This is go for ANY race toward ANY type of music. Let's stop making everything a war on race 🙄 Y'all really gotta stop being so butt hurt about stuff like this and take it with a grain of salt.

This is obviously untrue, as many white people go through hard lives and many black people have 'privileged' lives in comparison.

The amount of black girls I have heard just even if it was a little part playing around, they can sing without even trying! Men... hahahahaha I can't...until I switch it up to Spanish then it's like my Mexican blood is pouring out, but to an extent!

DEFINITION OF SOUL MUSIC *FROM WIKIPEDIA*....... Soul music has its roots in traditional African-American gospel music and rhythm and blues, and the hybridization of their respective religious and secular styles, in both lyrical content and instrumentation, that began to occur in the 1950s. The term *soul had been used among African-American musicians to emphasize the feeling of being an African-American in the U.S* [7] According to musicologist Barry Hansen,[8]
@badddgurlll970
@badddgurlll970 8 жыл бұрын
According to another source, *"Soul music was the result of the urbanization and commercialization of rhythm and blues in the '60s."[9] The phrase "soul music" itself, referring to gospel-style music with secular lyrics, is first attested in 1961.[10] The term 'soul' in African-American parlance has connotations of African-American pride and culture* Gospel groups in the 1940s and 1950s occasionally used the term as part of their name. The jazz style that derived from gospel came to be called soul jazz. *As singers and arrangers began using techniques from gospel and soul jazz in African-American popular music during the 1960s, soul music gradually functioned as an umbrella term for the African-American popular music at the time*

Later examples of soul music include recordings by The Staple Singers (such as I'll Take You There), and Al Green's 1970s recordings, done at Willie Mitchell's' Royal Recording in Memphis. Mitchell's Hi Records continued the Stax tradition in that decade, releasing many hits by Green, Ann Peebles, Otis Clay, O.V. Wright and Syl Johnson. Bobby Womack, who recorded with Chips Moman in the late 1960s, continued to produce soul recordings in the 1970s and 1980s.In Detroit, producer Don Davis worked with Stax artists such as Johnnie Taylor and The Dramatics. Early 1970s recordings by The Detroit Emeralds, such as Do Me Right, are a link between soul and the later disco style. Motown Records artists such as Marvin Gaye, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder and Smokey Robinson contributed to the evolution of soul music, although their recordings were considered more in a pop music vein than those of Redding, Franklin and Carr. Although stylistically different from classic soul music, recordings by Chicago-based artists are often considered part of the genre.By the early 1970s, soul music had been influenced by psychedelic rock and other genres. The social and political ferment of the times inspired artists like Gaye and Curtis Mayfield to release album-length statements with hard-hitting social commentary. Artists like James Brown led soul towards funk music, which became typified by 1970s bands like Parliament-Funkadelic and The Meters. More versatile groups like War, the Commodores and Earth, Wind and Fire became popular around this time. During the 1970s, some slick and commercial blue-eyed soul acts like Philadelphia's Hall & Oates and Oakland's Tower of Power achieved mainstream success, as did a new generation of street-corner harmony or "city-soul" groups such as The Delfonics and the historically black Howard University's Unifics.The syndicated music/dance variety television series Soul Train, hosted by Chicago native Don Cornelius, debuted in 1971. The show provided an outlet for soul music for several decades, also spawning a franchise that saw the creation of a record label (Soul Train Records) that distributed music by The Whispers, Carrie Lucas, and an up-and-coming group known as Shalamar. Numerous disputes led to Cornelius spinning off the record label to his talent booker, Dick Griffey, who transformed the label into Solar Records, itself a prominent soul music label throughout the 1980s. The TV series continued to air until 2006, although other predominantly African-American music genres such as hip-hop began overshadowing soul on the show beginning in the 1980s.As disco and funk were dominating the charts in the late 1970s and early 1980s, soul went in the direction of quiet storm. With its relaxed tempos and soft melodies, quiet storm soul took influences from soft rock and adult contemporary. Many funk bands, such as Con Funk Shun, Cameo, and Lakeside would have a few quiet storm tracks on their albums. Among the most successful acts in this era include Smokey Robinson, Teddy Pendergrass, Peabo Bryson, Atlantic Starr, and Larry Graham.After the decline of disco and funk in the early 1980s, soul music became influenced by electro music. It became less raw and more slickly produced, resulting in a style known as contemporary R&B, which sounded very different from the original rhythm and blues style. The United States saw the development of neo-soul around 1994. Mainstream record label marketing support for soul genres cooled in the 2000s due to the industry's re-focus on hip-hop.

The lady which got almost all correct knows what she's talking. But she misused the word 'struggle'. The way words are pronounced, the attitude, the charisma, the soul and then coming in with the singing techniques.
