I'm an only child, and I never felt lonely because I didn't know any different. Also, I kind of understood Chance when he was about to say "it's not that 'deep' ", because to us it's not as kids we thought and still think that we are fine and lacked nothing. Honestly in my adult life I think it has made me less needy / clingy when it comes to relationships. I value my friendships but I LOVE being alone.

I grew up with many brothers and sisters so I’m on the opposite spectrum. You say it’s a good thing because it made you less needy, but the problem I’m running into with my only child husband is that he lacks the ability to give people the affection they crave or need. You are right, he doesn’t seem to need affection at all but I do and it’s becoming a real issue.

Only child here and I have always disliked being called spoiled. I did not throw tantrums because my parents didn’t play that. As a matter of fact, my whole family didn’t play that with none of the kids. But somehow I was still labeled spoiled. I was really close with my parents and they have passed on now. Our family was really close and I have lots of cousins and we were raised close like siblings. So to this day, I have them because my parents are gone. But I still had that stigma of being spoiled and I never appreciated that. My parents taught me how to take care of myself and be independent as a young lady. Now I was able to get things sometimes that others didn’t, but it was in reason. My parents didn’t just buy me everything I wanted. I had to earn things or maybe I just didn’t get it at all. The loneliness part was fulfilled by having my cousins. I was an outgoing child and made friends easily. That part about being left alone, baby, that is a definitely a trait we have😂😂😂 I can’t deny it. When I need my time alone, I will take it and won’t feel bad about it.

An Only Child does it all. I had to bury my Mother Father step mom and stepfather. And bear the brunt of the resentment of cousins aunts who all had large families. My Uncle had 11 children my other Uncle had 7 children. My Mother gave them my old clothes and beds THEY RESENTED ME ! Because my Step Father and my Mother led a middle class house. I'm 69 yrs old and I have 100 cousins now because they had big families who HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH ME. BECAUSE OF the misconception of being an Only Child. Because I lived better than them. Mind you I didn't choose that life. When we were grown my cousin confronted me with " yeah yo momma gave us underwear and fruit and yo leftovers and thought she was doing something". And yes she did My Mother had 18 nephews and nieces and she made sure each of them had something EVERY Christmas and she made Christmas Dinner Every Christmas! Yeah a Only child have crosses to bear. There are some great kids that are only children. They have great experiences. There are positives and maybe negatives of both. Think about people with many kids feeling ignored, or some of them wanting to get away b/c it’s too much activity and drama with their siblings. It goes both ways. We all have different experiences growing up and that makes up who we are.

And I Iam grateful for not yearning to hold on to unhealthy connections, family and outside relationships included. As an Incredible Human, when I see that a person isn't treating Me the way I Am treating them, I snip and keep it moving - Guilt Free. I've learned when someone is jealous or envious of your character, your spirit, or your energy, that's dangerous! And the more life I live I see people for who they truly are. And I only desire to share space with people who light up when I step into a room and vice versa!

My parents wanted more kids, but we’re unable to have them. So it’s not like they didn’t want to have more kids. Now as a mom of three, I really try to get my kids to cherish their relationship as siblings. I even ask my husband how it was having a sibling growing up. Sometimes it feels like you missed out, but I am still grateful for everything I had. I also cherish friendships and hold on to friends from childhood as well.

I’m an only child and I totally understand where Chance is coming from. When you’ve been alone in a sense all your life, you really don’t have to have people around you all the time and if a relationship is not beneficial in any form cutting that person off , I feel is being able to properly discern people and their true motives so when you’re an only child you really don’t have that hard of a time ending those relationships and moving on and being to yourself.

As an only child, I can really relate to Chance. This should be a panel discussion. I can cut you off and then go enjoy my solitude. I never felt like I was spoiled, but I've never been good at sharing too much. I had a lot of cousins that I saw almost every day, but those days I didn't... talk about bored!

My mom always said my siblings and I spoiled ourselves. She was not going to own our behavior...that was our responsibility once she taught us right from wrong. We are very close to our mother and my dad loved her with all he had to give. Chance is an example of making the best of your childhood and being better for it despite some less than ideal circumstances. Listening to today's talk I'm aware that I had the luxury of a safe and uneventful childhood with parents that struggled financially while raising a large family. You definitely value what your parents tried to do right while raising you.

So true! I'm an only and feel like this all the time. I was the only and only grandchild for the longest but my parents divorced which really cut most of my opportunities to be spoiled. I grew up fast and was taking care of other at 13 yrs old and could take care of myself by then if I was legally able to work at that age. So the pressure to marry, no it get divorced, and have their grandchildren, be a success because there is no other hope they can put on another golden child, is so real! And honestly our parents can be just as spoiled regarding their expectations of us and start having tantrums when we want to do different things than what they were able to present during our formative years.

I felt what Chance was saying! This was a very insightful conversation. I am also a person who doesn’t hesitate to protect my mental health and peace. We all grow and sometimes it means outgrowing foolishness and cutting ppl off. I read people’s energy very quickly and if it doesn’t align with my peace and spirit… it’s like they never existed. Bye! BTW… I was a very quiet/introverted middle child with 5 extroverted siblings, but I always felt like I was an only child.

Oh baby I loved being an only child. It was fun with just my mum and I. I’ve always been a loner but never lonely. Had friends but wasn’t allowed to go to their house or do sleep overs but I didn’t mind because I’ve always preferred MY home over other ppls homes 🤷🏾‍♀️31 years later I’m still the same. And I appreciate my mum so much for keeping that leash tight on me.

Chance nailed it. This was my childhood as well. It was just my mom and I and my friends with siblings were jealous of me and I was jealous of them always having someone around to do something with. My mom had "the look" and you just said sorry and shut my mouth or paid the consequence. I do like my quiet, alone time as well. Lockdown was not an issue for me.

There are A LOT of people like Chance. Only child or not. Setting boundaries and cutting people off is a positive thing when done for rational reasons and something I wished I could have learned sooner. Protect your space and your peace. Don't keep giving people the chance to abuse and mistreat you over and over again. You can forgive people and move on with your life, forgiveness doesn't always equate to reconciliation. I had to learn all of that the hard way. Ain't nothing wrong with Chance. 😂😂😂💞💞💞 Good episode!!!!

I am not actually an only child however by the age of 5 all of my siblings , 13, 14 and 18 years older than me, were gone so I lived as an only child. Chance is right, I can be with you or by myself and be fine. I wasn't bad spoiled, but the advantage I had was having older siblings grown and working, they provided some things that my parents couldn't afford. I love my solitude and quietness and my PEACE will not be disurbed by agitators. Great conversation.

I agree with him. That’s a common child behavior to get upset about not getting something. But the ones who feel they ALWAYS need to get some thing or ALWAYS BLOWING UP about not gettin something is a brat and what makes them Spoiled is when the PARENT GIVES IN EVERYTIME AND GIVE THEM SOMETHING.

I believe Chance and many only children. Have the gift of detachment, and they know what it feels like to only have to care about themselves. So that need to protect themselves and their energy always comes first. Verses someone with siblings always have to share (not only material things) but also share energy, or emotions, or well being. I’m the oldest, and I’ve always had to make sure to take care of me and my little brother. And often I put myself last in order to make sure he was okay. And even at 33 I still feel the need to always make myself available for him if he needs it, even when I don’t feel up to it, but that’s all I know and I’m his big sister. Detachment isn’t really a option for me.
