Many people think of what is actually povidone-iodine when they think of iodine, and it is a sickly brown color when applied to skin. Pure iodine vapor is indeed very purple, matching the colors of the other vapors, and is very dark purple as a solid.

Pure iodine at room temperature is violet, as is iodine vapour. AQUEOUS Iodine (and iodine in some solutions) is brown.
