I've done a lot of homeless outreach through my church and what you said (the dollar store has mostly unhealthy food), is why a lot of poorer people have a weight problem. I don't know why vegetables and fruits couldn't be at the dollar stores. Fruits and vegetables are so expensive in the US. This is unacceptable. We need to start making it easier for the poor to eat well. I'm not saying all of them have a weight problem, but talking to many homeless every week, this is one of the things I have heard over and over from them. When a watermelon cost $6-$7 and a pack of chips cost $1-$2 at the dollar stores, they will buy chips which are horrible for a person. Children's weight is at an all time high also. Many children are getting obese from the way they have to eat. If all the people in the US who are multimillionaires , gave 1 million each, we could do away with or make a big dent in childhood obesity, and homelessness. What a shame that only the wealthy get to eat healthy.

Yeah. But if you do have basic utilities they do have tons of frozen veggies. Fish and such. Healthy choice soups. Rice cakes. Lunch meat (although for the amount it's cheaper to get that at Wal-Mart). Cheese. Fruit juice. Rice. Beans. Random soups and pastas. Smart balance oil. Etc. You just need basic utilities and some creativity.

Alfie did his for personal gain and showed “oh look I can get a free coffee, oh look I can get free donuts” and he went out and bought random crap not in his £1 “budget” where as Saffron made this to show what you can get from places like Poundland and the dollar store.
