Our elders here in Romania said when the spider spins a thick web in autumn, a cold winter is coming. When the cat comes close to the heated oven and sleeps next to it with its front paws und the chest, rain is coming. In summer, when the cows walk or run on the field with their tails up in the air, a storm is coming. When sparrows bath in sand during the summer, rain is coming.

@theoldguy932 I have a dodgy hip and also suffer from migraines. They're pretty accurate, but it's worthwhile knowing other things, like clear weather in wintertime means that it's gonna be *cold* out there. Clear skies in summer usually mean it's going to be extra hot. Leaves on plants and trees will usually wilt before a thunderstorm. Birds will be more active before a storm, and when they go quiet and take to their nests, take their advice and seek shelter. And remember the old rhyme: Red sky at night, sailor's (or shepherd's) delight, red sky at dawning, sailor take warning.

I forgot what type of wood my old man used, but I think it was fir or spruce. He would cut off a piece where the branches were about size of a plate and hang it. The branches were curling up or down based on the humidity and it would predict the rain accurately. I just forgot which was which. Fun vid!

Good stuff. Your most cherished item after you buy out will be your giant crock pot. Get a good one, they aren't cheap. You more snow it holds the less often you need to do water. You can bake bread in it. Use it as a sink. Haul water with it. They aren't as fun as swords and knives but it's in my top items. Crock pot, flashlight, Bluetti, DeWalt chainsaw, fiskars maul, winter sleeping bag, winter jacket, winter boots, summer boots, duckie pants. .22 rifle. These are my most used items. I bugged out July 2022.

I've used the dewalt saws (friends here have them). While they are handy, I find they really like to grab twigs and jam them up underneath the cover, and the cover is a pita to remove (takes ridiculously long to unscrew/screw back on). When I went to buy my own battery saw, we got the 40v ryobi with 14" bar. I can do several hours of falling and cutting on one battery, and when it does fail to eject twigs and other debris, it's easy to clean out without having to remove the cover :) We bought an American-made cast iron Dutch oven and use it all the time! The lid even doubles as a frying pan flipped over :)
@TheFireDragon-f2d14 күн бұрын
@AgnesMariaL I know what you are taking about and get those issues with my saw, but not to any major degree. I yank twigs out at least once a use, but it's a second of work. I don't find the plastic cover too bad to take off, but it hates threading correctly when putting t back. Always takes a few tries. I have a Dutch oven also but never ended up using it. I used it my first winter on the stove to soak up heat and radiate it all night, but now I use my stock pot full of water instead. I might have to try other electric saws. I use DeWalt because all my tools are DeWalt so it's convenient for batteries. I certainly don't get hours of work out of a battery. My big battery still drains in about an hour of solid work.
@AgnesMariaL13 күн бұрын
@TheFireDragon-f2d I think dewalt is the only one we don't have any of, lol :p Originally i wanted tye 18v ryobi saw because my kit is that, but for the price difference it just made sense to go up to the 40v :) Of course, it's quite heavy compared to the little dewalt - the battery is probably two or three times the size of the bigger dewalt batteries - but not only is it great for doing all the piddly stuff, it can handle a lot of the bigger stuff that I usually haul out the 455 rancher for, so we're quite happy with it :) We also wound up getting the posthole auger with 8" and 3" bits, as we had footings to pour for a biilding and we have lots of fencing to put up. My husband is quite happy with the performance of that tool as well, and he used to make fun of me for liking ryobi 😂 We have a bunch of bigger pots that we use for things like canning, heating water/melting snow. It's just the two of us here, so for cooking and baking the dutch oven is perfect for us :)
@TheFireDragon-f2d13 күн бұрын
@AgnesMariaL Nice. I have the 460 Rancher myself lol. I haven't touched it other than to put it away since getting the little DeWalt. With solar, being able to cut endlessly using electricity is so nice. I don't like buying gas. I haven't seen the post hole auger, I'll google that, it sounds interesting. It's funny how people start prepping like they are going into a mad Max movie, but after you really bug out you quickly realize it's all about food. I thought I would be living off hunting and farming by now. Not. Even. Close. lol. I went real hungry the first winter. Hunting when you are starving is a different way to live.
@AgnesMariaL13 күн бұрын
@TheFireDragon-f2d Oh, it's definitely a lifestyle unto its own! The first time I went off-grid was as a child, and we subsisted off twice-yearly shipments by barge for dry goods, a once-yearly shopping trip to town a 45-minute boat ride plus 2-hour car-ride away, our chickens, fishing (I swear, I got sick of fish right quick!) and one year my dad got an old bear who was at his end and hanging about but couldn't hear the warning shots! Now, I have finally returned to that lifestyle, three years ago at age 44 :) We have a small homestead, though: poultry, rabbits, pigs and sheep. The rabbits and pigs are our best producers, and the best ROI. We have deer and wild rabbit that we can hunt, but I haven't had time because hubby's been out of town for work the past month, so I've been pulling double-duty. He'll be home this evening for almost a week, though, so we may yet get a deer this season :) But yeah, it takes time... The sheep have been the sharpest learning curve, and the most expensive! We are definitely in the hole with them - like, a couple thou - but I refuse to give up!

They are insanely expensive! If I had $400 to blow, I'd rather buy another sheep or something else useful. Pressure canners are a modern, western thing - the rest of the world just water baths everything like they did before that invention (which is apparently illegal in Germany because they can explode), and no-one has died yet from eating canned meat! And yes, canning is a great way to tenderize old meat; I just did a 3-year-old rabbit last week and oh my, does she ever go down easy 😋😋😋

That may or may not work, depending on the amount of chemicals in the air where you live. Big cities like LA, their air should be listed as flammable at times, and unbreathable all the time. If you think I am kidding, remember that Lake Erie caught on fire, and they couldn't put it out, so it had to burn itself out. Also the Cuyahoga river has been on fire several times. And those happened without any kind of disaster. Once something SHTF worthy happens, who knows what might take place.

I even watch ant's and the way they prepare for wet weather and Cold weather! And they are many more things to watch for in nature that I learned from my grandparents that were born in 1893 and passed away in 1973 and 1978 ! They lived through times with no weather radar or TV news and survived on the family farm they survived the Hoover days and ate like a king and Queen and so did my mother and father and they grew their own vegetables and slaughtered their own beef and pork and chickens they raised! And I grew up in that way of growing and preparing food and putting it up to eat and a lot of food to last over a year and smoke cured and salt cured meat and fish and plenty of eggs and chickens to last me! I go to the store right out side and get eggs and I milk my cow for fresh milk the real kind that's not half watered down like 2 percent milk is! Make my own butter from the skim of the milk! Real butter the best ever ! And real corn grits the yellow feild corn and good yellow corn meal !

She always kept a few minnows in a fishbowl and could tell you by what they were doing if the fish were going to be biting or not. it's likely because the temperature and humidity sensors are located within the unit itself, meaning it only measures the environment directly around it, not the outside air. That's what an old school weather station that hangs on your wall will do. You need one for outside to do the outside weather. I wonder if they make an analog one for outside that won't get ruined by the weather or an EMP? I got a decent weather station outside right now but if an EMP hits it ain't going to do me any good.

If it's a real apocalyptic scenario (like the giant west coast earthquake we are expecting), we won't have access to clothes for a while if we don't just leave. Get canning lids and tops, spices to preserve food. The lids are a consumable product and they can be challenging to find while full production is up and running. Last, I like the washboard idea from the previous video, but also stock up on soap of all kinds. Deodorants, etc. The small stuff we take for granted.

Have you ever done a boot review. Very specific, a work boot , safe, practical, useful if you're. not on welfare, maybe a winter boot? Forgot to put that in. It seems companies love to advertise -40, but ?? It was a long, cold day, so I also fixed some punctuation.

I have the same issue. I just use those stick-on toe warmers now, as they're fairly inexpensive.

Having a Sling psychrometer and knowing how to use will help in weather forecasting. It would enable you to determine a falling or rising barometric pressure, humidity, and dew points.

I’m in the Vancouver area, it’s gonna rain 🌧️. I’ve got a thermometer outside on the deck, that’s the only weather device I have but it’s usually pretty survivable here. Love the idea of having a bunch of traps 👍🏻

If you're in Vancouver it's always raining/misting

In the olden days I use to be able to read the different types of clouds and correctly forcast the weather, but with all this weather modified spraying stuff...who knows

How about showing us how to cast a net? The nets with weights around the outside. And how to repair the nets. Something every Atlantic kid tries to dodge having to do, but completely left feild for a prairie kid.

Good video. Kestrel handheld weather meters work great.
