10th schedule - Anti - defection law was passed to prevent political defection prompted by the lure of office or material benefits Defection means to abandon a position or association often to join an opposing group. It was enacted to ensure that a party member does not violate the mandate of party and in case, he does so, he will lose the membership of the house.
