Thank you (!!!) for discussing air purifying qualities of plants! I really dislike when my co-workers or boss talk up the qualities of a plant to a customer (garden center) by mentioning that it'll purify the air. The last time a customer asked me if a Spathiphyllum would purify their air I said "Yeah... If you bought about 400 of them for your bedroom".

Until I read about not using tap water here in the US, my air plants kept dying. I do fill gal. jugs of water and leave them uncapped. Since using that water, I really haven't lost any, in fact, they have bloomed and given me a few pups.

You fill the jugs with normal tap water? I’m trying to figure this out.
@fitz1494 Жыл бұрын
@@ArtByCaroline123 yes because normal tap water has chlorine in it. letting it sit out without a lid/cap allows the chlorine to evaporate. letting it sit overnight should be more than good enough.

I use my aquarium water as a free mild fertilizer and I actually soak or dunk the air plants in the aquarium. The desert species plants especially the bulbous ones must be dunked and not soaked. I dry all of the plants upside down for 2 hours after gently shaking them out.

I saw somewhere on Summer Rayne Oakes' youtube channel that Tillandsias tend to hold on better to Lava rocks than to cork. I don't know if all species behave that way, but did you try to put it on a rock and let the roots hold on naturally, without using glue? Maybe with a wire which provides temporary support. I like to hear if you tried it and what are the results.

Hello. Thank you for your detailed explanation on care of air plants. What are your thoughts on using tap water? Other care explanations would suggest using only rainwater or distilled water for indoor watering or allowing tap water to sit overnight to reduce the harmful chlorine and other chemical water utility additives. Thank you.
@onlyplants3 жыл бұрын
That highly depends on the water you get in the tap. City water is highly processed… leaving water exposed to air for a day may remove some chemicals/minerals but not all. Maybe those filter jugs would be a better solution if your tap water is burning your plants?
@maryann99293 жыл бұрын
@@onlyplants Thank you for your response. I have used tap water and ours is from a municipal utility water source but I'm guessing it's heavily treated. I started using distilled water but I never noticed any burning. Appreciate your thoughts as I am relatively new to these air plants. So far so good!

Hello! Thanks for this video. It’s super helpful. I’ve had airplants twice and they all eventually died. 😢 I think I know what I did wrong now because of this video! 😅 Yay!🎉 Can I ask a couple questions? First, what are those blue fertilizer pieces/pellets that you use? Also, where do you keep yours? (Inside or outside).. And finally, what part of the country (or what country) are you in? I’m in northwest Florida now and I’m trying to figure out the best situation for the air plants. I’ve had them in the Midwest before and they didn’t survive. Thank you so much!!! 😊
@onlyplants Жыл бұрын
I have kept airplants both indoors and out. I live in Jakarta Indonesia so its a tropical climate. The care is quite different indoors vs outdoors… but the concept is the same. You want to keep them on the dry side most of the time. They can rot very easily if its pooling water or get too little light and airflow.

once you remove the pups from the mother plant do you throw the mother plant away..or will it keep producing more pups until it dies?
@onlyplants7 ай бұрын
It depends if she has produced the maximum amount of pups she can. If she has available nodes it should sprout into pups. I might even guess that removing established pups will give the plant more energy to active more pups instead of supporting those attached pups
@ProgressiveDiscussions3 жыл бұрын
What is your recommended soaking weekly time frame because I have lost so many airplanes to rot. The Silvery fuzzy ones seem to die with anything beyond a very brief dunk. The general advice of soaking them for 20 minutes or longer seems to rot my plants. My plants are all indoor with very bright indirect light. The species that I had the worst luck with is Bulbosa and Streptophyllis. Ionantha are colorful. Caput of Medusa is my favorite. I wish I could succeed with Bulbosa.
@onlyplants3 жыл бұрын
experts recommend soaking them up to 8 hours... the key is to drain them completely dry, making sure no water is left in the crown. Give it very good airflow, and some direct sunlight. If its not in excellent light conditions I may recommend only misting them and never soaking.
