Honestly, I hadn't expected Kavakos of all people to have such a beautiful interpretation of Tchaikovsky. He's always accused of being too "academic" in his playing, but this performance hits all the right spots emotionally. And of course you can always rely on him to be accurate. What a player

There's something about his tone that is brisk and rustic, yet collectively so tidy at the same time. I find that juxtaposition really addicting and satisfying to listen to. The old familiar pieces sound new to my ears, like rediscovering them all over again.

Magnificent playing, love to see Kavakos in “the Zone” where the music takes all his energy. I wish his fans would build him a KZbin channel of his own with all his pieces featured. He sets the bar as high as it will go for musicality. I also love the videos of him going to visit his luthier friend in London, especially the one where he is reunited with his Stradivarius!

I respect Kavakos but I feel he missed the mark on the first movement. It was far too slow in the beginning (for my taste) and later, he almost seemed to rush, as though to catch up. He also played it very emotionless. The final few minutes (of the first movement) were better, but even then (and actually, throughout the entire first movement) he played with time too much and there is such a thing as too much rubato. I'm sure it was to some people's taste, and he aced the other two movements, but it was't for me.

@@musicalme27 I took the opportunity of your commenting on my "critique" to listen to this again - I've certainly changed my mind before; about interpretations, pieces, even composers - but in this case I stand behind my initial assessment. I wish you lots of joy with it though - I didn't say it was a bad performance, just that it wasn't for me, and I stand behind that too :)

I agree. I didn't get anything out of Kavakos. What's more, his poor phrasing and mote expression made me missing the more of Alena Baeva's playing. The concerto is made for her not for the cool hand Kavakos.
