Wow that was a bit of a shocker and why i don't care a lot for flat ground blades...also 1095 is a bit hard for a chopper unless it has a convex ground blade...Love the look and perfomance of that traditional Kukri...Thanks for the video and demonstration...atvb...woods

Good testing, thanks. Ontario knives are a great value for knives, but too brittle for hard chopping. I've used old hickory knives (Ontario,1095) for years and I love them, but they do chip. My Kailash had a minor edge issue when I got it, but after a good sharpening it's a great chopper, very reliable. Being hand made, they're not perfect but with a little touching up their great.

I definitely would say the full-flat grind didn't help either.

The Kailash kukru has been a leader for along time. I have always preferred Kailash forging process. The Onteria should have performed better m. Maybe they need work their version and start considering dual tempers for their blades.

I'm often asked about good value western offerings for those who aren't ready to try something nepalese- my suggestion has been the OKC kukri for some time. The profile is pretty good, the weight and spine thickness is very decent and the grind is quite nice. The handle is welcoming to newcomers and the balance and feel in hand is a step above most western khukuris on the market and well past anything of a similar price level. With this said though the kind of edge failure here is pretty serious and gives me cause to reconsider that. I'd say the geometry likely isn't the issue here but instead steel and heat treat. 5160 when properly heat treated has a much higher toughness and can also see an increase in edge stability with that. It's also very forgiving if the heat treat goes poorly. 1095 should have superior edge holding and max sharpness but it's questionable how important those traits are for an impact chopping tool. I'd say the extreme brittleness here comes down to poor heat treat. 1095 with this geometry should really be up to that kind of work. Thanks for putting the video together! I hear you on the price of watermelons right now- it's been a spendy christmas that's for sure. Take care, Andrew and the team at Kailash

I wish people would look past price and focus on the craftsmanship and quality instead, when considering these knives. Compared to the OKC, an equivalent quality Nepalese khukuri is only $70 - $80 CAD more including shipping and exchange rate, but the increase in quality and craftsmanship is exponential. It is absolutely worth the extra cost, as long as the khukuri is well made. The challenges for newcomers the are to figure out whom to buy from, and what model and also to put up a significant amount of extra money. And they have to do this based on zero experience, while going off the recommendations of others. It also doesn't help that there is a lot of cheap garbage that only resemble khukuris in shape, but are completely inferior in every way. It's not an easy thing to try something new, especially if it costs more, but hopefully this comment (and this video and the comments on it) will help someone make the right choice.

Hey, I don't know why you turned off comments on the GGK 12 Sirupate, but I just wanted to say that I liked it very much and was impressed by how it went through the materials that were cut. Any idea on its weight?

Is the Ontario made in the USA? Best to stick with Nepalease Khukuri 10 inch to 14inch depending on what you are using it for.
