I went to school in Bologna in the 1960's. I don't think I'll be going back, but I loved that town, particularly the Center(Centro). I look at videos of Bologna and feel quite nostalgic.

My family of three travelled to Bologna approx. 2005 and took day trips to Ferrara, Modena, Firenze and Maranello. It was really unforgettable and would like to go again.

Yes, renting a car was unnecessary for a 7 day trip. Plenty to see in Bologna alone.

You should add that you can watch movies in the Piazza Maggiore. The list of movies they show over the summer months is incredible. They will show anything from 90s American crowd pleasers, 50s French movies, and silent movies with a live orchestra. The movies are part of a film festival every year
