We're Olivia and Nathan 👋🏽
The Magic of Mackinac Island, Michigan
Mackinac Island in Michigan felt like a theme park:
a short ferry ride is required to get there
there are no cars allowed only horses and their carriages
you'll find the majestic Mackinac Island Grand Hotel rivaling the imaginary Grand Budapest Hotel
there are endless mounds of fudge (check out Joann's Fudge) and good restaurants
you can take a dip in the crystal clear waters #unsalted with an arch rock to hike up to
You get the idea. This place has a rich history, and although this is not a travel guide per se, we do share what an action-packed day would look like on the island!

I lived on Mackinac Island for a season....back in 1994? It was wild and weird and awesome.....Biked everywhere, worked in a T-shirt shop...our employer paid for our housing on the island. A bunch of us lived in a house. It was fun. I love going to the Mission Point Resort and going to the bar and sitting and looking out at the lake while having pizza and a drink....There was a fancy restaurant in the middle of the island...and the biking trails throughout were so cool! Lots of history and I may have encountered a ghost!!!

First went to Mackinac Island summer of 1974 ! Had children 1978/'81/'84. Went back to island each summer for 25 years ... Stayed for 4 days ... Children would go to each fudge shop every morning for free samples and would be wired before breakfast! Stayed most years at The Chippewa/ ... Also some years at Island House/Lake View ... Never enough $ for Grand Hotel but Mom (myself) spent much time at GH sitting on porch and hanging out in the gardens ... Saw many different stores on island come and go ... Kids loved Fort + we always took the Carriage ride ... Was there the year the electricity went down (!) ... Mom (me) now lives in nursing home and didn't think l would ever get there again but cildren/grandchildren bringing her(me) summer of 2025! 😊

The biggest thing about Mackinaw Island is the history and you didn't share any of that. The beautiful old homes (some from the 18th century), the fort, the churches, the gardens and the interior of the island. If you stay until the last ferry back at 11pm you'll have several hours with out all the tourist and its so beautiful after dark. Not to mention coming back on the ferry with all the lights lit on the Mackinaw bridge. I spent a season working at the Grand Hotel in the late 90's. It's not like Disney! Its a real place that many people call home. I encourage everyone to come and experience it for themselves. Bring your own bike, get away from the docks and explore. Mackinaw city is tiny and fantastic too.
@ONWorldTravel
@ONWorldTravel 3 жыл бұрын
That is true Gail, Mackinaw has a very rich history. We read a lot about the history but chose not to share it in the video. We wanted to do a more visual/lighter video on what the average visitor would experience. To be honest, we could have easily spent more time there and learned even more about the history. Thanks for sharing, all the best!

Having lived there, one would think you would know how to S P E L L MACKINAC ISLAND!! There's a different spelling between Mackinac Island and Mackinaw City. And Charlevoix is definitely pronounced "CHARLEVOY" and NOT "CharleVUWAH"... just so irritates me to watch all these dumb vlogs of young people RVing cross-country like they're doing something so uniquely bohemian yet they so rarely bother to research and area's history or simple pronunciation of where they are. Ask a local. They'll at least know how to pronounce where they are, and if they don't know much else about the area,, they'll likely know someone who does. It's real simple.

I am wondering what time of year did you visit, as it seemed rather cloudy and overcast. It's a place that I would like to visit just because my grandmother (God rest her soul) is from St Ignace. Also, from what I gathered in this video it seemed to be a major tourist attraction for seniors citizens; is my observation off base? You two looked like the youngest (in your age category) on the island in a swarm of elderly. I am wondering what is the hottest sunny summer months to go visit, as I would not like to be there on cloudy, rainy, overcast days. At any rate, great video!

Well, to be fair to the horses and the people walking bikes, Mackinac Island is surprisingly hilly. Just walking up to the fort can wind you if you're not super in shape.

My brother met his wife up there when they were both working at the Grand Hotel for the summer. In fact, he had to change the flag on top of the hotel, the one at the highest point of the hotel. That would be a great view! It would take me all day to change that flag, I wouldn’t want to come down.

The building on the left that's green,is that where the fudge is made at on the huge piece of marble? I haven't been there since I was around 10 years old, I'm now 57. Memories, first went the when I was camp than my parents went..

Yea they make it on these huge marble slabs in each store!! Definitely lots to choose from, felt paralysis by analysis as soon as we walked in 😂 had to pick the right one!! I’m sure it’s changed a lot, would be interesting for you to go back! All the best!

Since the island is on the east side of the Strait of Michilimackinac, it is in Lake Huron. But, the reality, from a topographic perspective is that Lakes Huron and Michigan are arms of a common lake.

Wife just bought up the idea of us going there in 2 weeks. We never been there and I never heard of it and we're from Chicago. I was planning to drive south to Myrtle Beach. But still debating if I should check this area out? 🤔

Do the island i live 20 minites from the island now, been there plenty of times but never gets old always new things to see. Stay away from the main strip and bike the whole island if you can. Way better time in my opinion. As someone who has been to the island and myrtle beach multiple times i say go to the island. I always feel at peace there
