Working our way through KICK OFF... I think there are two songs left to go!!! Yume Catalog is in the same fashion.
Here's an interesting song. It's one of the only songs on the album that includes members that aren't the "OG Four." And Mamiko gets a leading solo part! Pretty impressive. Anyways, there is a lot of debate about Sonoko and Yuuyu being on this song. They are credited on the song but it is VERY hard to tell where they are singing since there is no live version. So I made an educated guess. Please excuse me if I'm wrong ^^;;;

Thank you for the translation! I've liked this song for a while but didn't realize it was so...cheeky ;) but maybe I should have guessed. I wonder what Dustin Hoffman movie was playing that was making everyone cry? In the early 80's he was in Tootsie...I didn't realize that was a tearjerker.

To be honest... especially in the year 1985 which is when KICK OFF came out, Aki-P was using a LOT of very random English words and references in his lyrics. Personally I believe he was making references to the things he personally enjoyed. For example in many songs written that year he referenced many foreign authors, either by name or through their literature, that very few Japanese people at the time would know. (some examples are J.D. Salinger, Ivan Turgenev, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry) So, I honestly am not entirely sure if this is referencing a real movie or not. It wouldn't surprise me if he just threw his name in there because Aki-P himself was a big fan of him at the time. This behavior kind of stopped in mid-1986 or so as he began to write more and more pop songs and his lyrical work became much more polished. I'm sure record execs were not so happy about his random references confusing people...

I'm so familiar with this Onyanko Club song, but I just heard another song on an 80s internet radio station that I'm sure this song borrowed. If you listen to Mari Wilson's song "Just what I always wanted" (from1982), when she sings 'Just what I always wanted', it sounds just like Onyanko's "Right now, We are.." part. (Which now I can't get out of my head) But hey, it works. 😊

That is interesting you bring this up, because the composer of this song, Etsuko Yamakawa, was evidently a huge fan of Mari. There are plenty of songs she composed that take inspiration from Mari's music, most famously Mari's "Beware Boyfriend" and Onyanko Club's "Umbrella Angel." I did not know about this song being similar to another Mari song, thank you!
