I'm new to scratch building , but I'm a practical bloke who doesn't like to lose bits of fingers using scalpels and steel rules , so I found an old 12" rule and using some spray adhesive stuck some 180 grit paper to one side . It doesn't move with medium weight pressure and doubles as a fine file . :-)

Hi Tony Another interesting build. When you were measuring I was shouting at the screen that the tank plates were normally 4 ft square in those days but you ended up with the correct dimensions in the end. The second building looks more modern to me. Regarding your tour of the layout, this was great to see how you had squeezed everything in. I assume the line does not go any further beyond South Shields. Keep up the good work.
@TONYNORTHEASTERN4 жыл бұрын
Hi Alan. i thought i could here my ears burning, lol, 4ft square that works out about 15mm in oo gauge, at least if ever have to build another one, i now have the sizes. The line does stop at south shields. it use to go down the quays and dock yard to bring in the fish. and supplies. but that was long before the station itself was built. but some traffic continued for a while. but mostly the passenger services took over. thanks again for commenting stay safe..........best wishes Tony

Thanks Tony that is interesting for me as I am new to the hobby and just finding my feet with everything , does anyone use Balsa-wood now a days when scratch building as I bought some 2mm with a view to having a go at some stage, but from what I have seen most modellers seem to favour card or plastic. @@TONYNORTHEASTERN Hi, thanks for the info! @@TONYNORTHEASTERN Hi Tony, I can't confirm that...I've been living down in the south east for 40-odd years! One thing though - I remember at the time, the received wisdom was that there were never going to be any new lines built. And yet, within a couple of decades, it all kicked off again!

Hi Tony. From the colour photo of the water tower, I don't follow your logic that the outbuilding is detached from the water tower. Just because the wall of the outbuilding is set back from the water tower, this doesn't mean it is detached. I think you need to do some more research if you want your model to be accurate.
@TONYNORTHEASTERN4 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul. thank for commenting as always. your comment has made me think so i checked up the old survey maps. and the water tower does stand alone. the small building was add on...thanks again for your input...........stay safe....Tony

Tony, I tried looking on some old maps to see if the water tower was attached to the other building maps.nls.uk/view/120934218 but you see the cut off point !! - I've stitched two OS25 maps of the area circa 1915 and it shows the signal box , and then two other square structures both of which are detached. As to what box on the map is the water tower, that would take some further research.... If you can provide an e-mail address I can mail you the image, or just overlay maps.nls.uk/view/120934209 with the link above - Hope that helps
