You've created a great atmosphere... one question: those chimneys are so tall! Can you explain?

Yes. The person who built this layout was a 3d artist. If you look again you will see that many of the roofs are an odd shape. There is some exaggeration and some changing of shape to fit a lot in while retaining a pleasing overall look.
