Ookpik Waltz (fiddle lesson)

Ookpik Waltz, also know as the Canadian Waltz, was written in 1965 by Frankie Rodgers. In this fiddle lesson I show three versions of the tune; the original; the much slower Jay Ungar version, and the Altan version.

Another great tune selection and great coverages of the versions. You mentioned Texas shorty he also played in contests Chancellors Waltz written by his father . Another tune he played was a crossed tune Benny Thomasson version of Black Mountain Rag that involved a complete section of plucking . Thanks for all you do for fiddling. Mike

I was just using this song as an example yesterday when a VERY good young fiddler was asking me about the difference between Canadian and American "Old Tyme Fiddling" !

I would imagine that Canadian and American old time fiddle styles are both very diverse, so we're always going to be dealing in generalizations.!

@@TheFiddleChannel yes, always generalizations, and the radio has led to a homogenization as well. I have also found there is a big difference between eastern and western Canada, I'm in Saskatchewan, and have tryed a couple times to play with a maritimer and just can't the rhythms are just too different. Ookpik Waltz is a great example though isn't it of how a song changes, As Frankie Rogers played it is the way I play it and is a very common Waltz tempo in my part of the world, I'm not convinced that the Ungar and Altan versions are the same song anymore. Anyway as always, thanks for these videos, I enjoy learning the history etc.
