This isn't really a slice-of-life tho, since it has a romantic progression and character development through time. Compared to SuccIDK which appears to be a 4koma gag comic with static characters in every day situations, it shows the distinction. You could call a romcom a slice-of-life if you expand the definition to "following everyday life", but Marin's definition of "nothing really happens and that's what great" doesn't apply here, imo.

@@JoshTheValiant My Dress-Up Darling is literally a slice-of-life. sure, there is progression, but it is extremely slow, because that's what a slice-of-life does: it focuses on personal relationships (not just with Marin, but Juju, Shinju, the grandpa, and later Marin's friends, etc) and things happening in everyday life (home date, going to the beach, going shopping, doing homework, etc) instead of conventions of other genres. it focuses more on the moments and that warm fuzzy feeling when you read it/watch it than "the plot". like, My Dress-Up... might be also a romcom (a lot of slice-of-life are romcoms), yeah, but it doesn't really focuses on the romance like a "normal" romcom would do. for being a romance story the actual romance is extremely scarce and almost never acted upon. like, a whole season and they haven't even kissed xd with SuccIDK, Marin is talking about a subgenre of slice-of-life, which is called "nichijō-kei" ("everyday type"), which is even more light and simple, but My Dress-Up... is definitely a slice-of-life.

Honestly, when it comes to fanservice/sexual scenes in anime, this one's probably one of the best I can remember. Makes sense in the context of the story, is relevant character wise and focuses on the emotions of the characters rather than in "servicing the fans". Good stuff.

IMO there is a difference between fanservice and sexual scenes. The camera following a character into a bathroom and gives close ups on them taking off their clothes for example is fanservice, this scene is different. Even when there are certain "fanservic-y" shots of Marin's body (and Gojo's 😳) it has a totally different feel. I have trouble explaining my feelings, it's not just that "this is fanservice, but this time justified by the story", it doesn't feel forced.

IMO if it makes sense then it is not really fan service. I think that is something people get wrong about this show...there is a lot of fan service, but every scene where we see something gojo saw, then it makes perfect sense. The idea is for us to feel what he felt, and that bed scene is outstanding in that sense. Every reactor i have seen get that reaction of first extreme discomfort and then laser focus engagement in the moment. Is very very good❤
