Critics of Korra always say that Bolin and Mako are recycled copies of Sokka and Zuko respectively... - My response is always "what show were you watching?" Bolin is the polar opposite of Sokka... Sokka is always making sarcastic jabs at his teammates, while Bolin is so genuine, he sometimes seems almost incapable of sarcasm... Sokka always has something to prove and wants to take charge while Bolin is usually content with himself... Sokka is always weary and skeptical, but Bolin... try to find a scheme in this series that he doesn't immediately fall for... As for Mako and Zuko... night and day... Mako is always managing everyone else's emotions while Zuko can barely keep his own emotions in check... Honestly, Bolin is more like Aang than Sokka... if Aang was older, a bit more chill, had fewer responsibilities, and wasn't the main character, he would be pretty similar to Bolin... If anyone's like Sokka, it's Mako... he's just much more serious... but he also has a bit of Katara's personality in him... I think people just associate Bolin with Sokka because he's kind of goofy and don't think too much more about either character.... Same with Mako and Zuko... because their firebenders...

I appreciate that you're already calling out how the characters in this series are their own characters and not just retreads of the previous cast, because I remember watching this series when it was originally airing, and haters were _absolutely_ accusing Bolin of being an "unfunny, discount Sokka," Mako of being "lame Zuko," etc. LoK, especially when it originally aired, got a _lot_ of hate rooted in either toxic fanboyism refusing to forgive LoK for not being ATLA season 4, and double standards for a brown woman as the main character of an action series. I won't pretend there isn't legitimate criticism to make of the show, but it frequently got drowned out by the volume and vehemence of bad-faith complaints. It got so bad that for a long time it was hard to be willing to engage even with the good faith criticism, because you knew any inch given to it would be jumped on by the people looking for any new angle to trash the show over.
@Heavenly_Dragon_King Жыл бұрын
As someone who doesn't like LoK as a whole and really dislikes Korra as a character, I never saw anyone complain that Korra was a brown woman. Not saying it didn't happen, but it must've been very few people doing it. After all Kyoshi is a huge fan favorite and princess Yue was liked by just about everyone. I read and watched many critique posts and videos to see if others shared my opinions about the show and characters and the closest thing I saw to that was people calling Korra a Mary Sue, which is arguable seeing how she was able to bend three elements right away no problem without training, but that's up to you to decide.
@ChristieWryte Жыл бұрын
@@Heavenly_Dragon_King You are right that criticism of Korra explicitly for being a brown woman was uncommon, but that's not the only way such biases manifest, and not the criticisms I was referring to. In fact, you raise the biggest double standard I was referring to yourself: the accusation that Korra is a Mary Sue. Outside of fanfiction discussions (and sometimes within them, too), "Mary Sue" is most frequently used as a label to delegitimize female characters for displaying levels of power, competence, and wish fulfillment comparable to male characters for whom such traits are taken for granted. Korra is labeled a Mary Sue for being a prodigy capable of producing a little puff of fire and move a trickle of water as a little girl, while Aang being the youngest airbending master in history gets no such scrutiny. Korra mastering her first 3 elements by the time she's seventeen through decades of rigorous training under the White Lotus is ridiculous, but Aang mastering the same three over the course of a summer at a younger age while spending half his time goofing off is fine. Korra is overpowered despite regularly facing highly competent opponents that she has to work hard to defeat, while Aang all but literally clowning on many of his foes through the first season is no problem. Aang being the last survivor of a wiped out people and possessing a power that is totally unique within the context of his story aren't even counted against him, despite being two very commonly suggested traits of Mary Sues. The "I like [female ATLA character]" defense isn't that rock solid, either, because it ignores a very significant difference between Korra and any of ATLA's female cast that has massive potential to shift perception. That being, that all the badass ladies of ATLA were supporting characters in a story that was always ultimately about a light-skinned boy, while Korra is the main character of her story. Bias and even prejudice are not all-or-nothing deals. A person can be completely fine with people of a certain identity in one context, and suddenly have a problem with them in another. In this case, a biased viewer may be fine or even celebrate non-light, non-male characters being as badass as they want in supporting roles, because as long as the main character is still a light-skinned male, their sense of propriety is not threatened in the same way or to the same degree that a dark-skinned woman occupying that privileged narrative position does. And before anyone says so, yes, I am aware that Aang is not white. The Air Nomads were culturally and ethnically modeled on Tibetans. But consciously knowing that Aang is Asian does not negate subconscious perception, and in ATLA's art style, Aang is fair-skinned with large, round eyes that make him very white-passing.
@Heavenly_Dragon_King Жыл бұрын
@@ChristieWryte Aang never mastered earth and fire by the end of ATLA. At the beach before Zuko reveals Ozai's plan Zuko and Toph both comment that Aang still needs work on his fire and earth bending. Water was the only one he managed to master. Now Aang who is as you mentioned a prodigy bender was not capable of bending other elements until he was taught. Korra just bends 3 no problem. As for Aang clowning on enemies, none of his enemies ever trained in fighting air benders and their defensive fighting style. People's main problem with Korra being a master of three elements at the start is that sometimes it feels like the show forgets that in her fights. At times the show feels like they nerf her for the sake of tension like they do with the avatar state in LoK. Other than that people's main problem with the show in general is Korra as a character, not how she looks, and the story mostly in the second season.

This episode is the first that really shows how out of her element (heh) Korra is in the city. Shes 17 and there’s so many things she has zero experience with from social interactions to political maneuvering. Not to mention, the world isn’t the same as when Aang was on his big journey. There’s no giant war. The Avatar doesn’t feel as needed. On top of that there’s a guy running around that can take people’s Bending which is how one determines who the Avatar is. So that leaves Korra, who’s entire identity is “I’m the Avatar”, feeling shaken to her entire core. Yeah, isolating the Avatar from her parents and other people her age, while also making her entire life about her training to become the Avatar, may have been a big misstep on the White Lotus’s part, just saying. On a different note: Best Girl Asami has entered the chat.
@bthsr7113 Жыл бұрын
I've been noting this in prior episodes. Korra is a capable warrior, but there isn't a proper war. There's insurgency, social issues, and schemes. Even if she could airbending, she'd still be ignorant of the wider politics and systemic problems, and completely oblivious to some of the finer details and nuances. Her struggle isn't learning how to fight, it's learning when and where to fight, and how to battle the shadows with words.
@Astronometric Жыл бұрын
To be fair, no matter if you are 17 or 50. Not many people would be able to keep it cool and give a proper response to the journalists. I think she had a natural reaction. As a viewer it's too easy to say "that was immature" or "I would have done it differently". Even if she would have lived in the city, without being trained in the art of politics and rhetoric she would have probably messed up anyway.
@BGTitanAvatar Жыл бұрын
@Astronometric I’m not saying I would have done any differently in her position if I was raised the way she was and was 17. It is true however that, generally, older people have learned to handle emotions better, and have more life experience (political or not). Of course there are exceptions and such to this generalization. What I was mainly driving at was how Korra had no way to defend against this, no way to prep, especially when she’s also fighting against herself in this moment by suppressing and denying her fear. I think Korra’s reaction here is entirely understandable.

@bthsr7113 Жыл бұрын
She wasn't ready, but while Korra does favor physical training, I never got the impression the White Lotus even tried to prepare her for having a social life or engaging in politics. And by age 17, if she hadn't been prepared for that, I somehow doubt that would have been effectively covered after she hypothetically reached proficiency with airbending, even though the lack of freedom had been holding her back in that. They taught her how to fight, so she could protect the world, but she didn't even know how much things could and should cost, let alone how to make a budget. How to spot con artists, social climbers, and power hungry? She has to rely on her instincts. She needed to socialize and see more of the world. Keeping her cooped up another year or longer while in a holding pattern wouldn't have helped her.

i just started watching the series here but i came to the latest vid to tell you about how to view the story writing since its development was rocky and the show was not treated well at all by nickelodeon. season 1 was originally made as a standalone season with its arcs wrapped up then and there and the same goes for seaosn 2 since that was greenlit near the end of season 1's production and caused problems and inconsistencies with character's personalities. season 3 and 4 however were greenlit together at the end of season 2's production and caused similar problems but due to them being greenlit together, it allowed season 3 to set up some things in season 4. the only problem there was budget cuts were made during seaosn 4's production and leftover budget had to be used from seaosn 3.

@@parsa1372 It's not a thing except when we're talking about the most skilled earthbenders in the world at the moment, and even then not all of them. Lin is the only person in the city who can do that. And even her seismic sense wouldn't cover the entire island.
@parsa1372 Жыл бұрын
@@Spherrum great we have a perfect known person with that ability, lets have her on such an important mission. The range deduction is out of nowhere but okay ill work with that. You dont need the entire island, you just need the main statue building aka where korra is. And believe me she can cove rthat.

I'm curious: Does your model detect crying or do you hit a button to activate the tears on it?

Y'know, I told myself I was gonna stop watching Alicia's Avatar watchalongs after finishing her ATLA series once I saw that she'd stopped watching Korra after Book 1... but here I am... Dammit. Edit: Equilibrium Head-Asses. F-kin dead.

Just cuz they're manipulated by Amon, doesnt mean they're not dangerous. Now I _agree_ it's a very bad move, but from a political standpoint rather than a moral one.

Season 1 of Korra slaps. Amon is the best Avatar villain.

Personally I disagree with you on those people in the raid didn’t deserve it just because they were being misled while yeah they were brainwashed they were still training to cause harm to people they possibly even kill them so that needed to happen because if it didn’t more harm would have come from it than the raid not having happened

Yeah they really pushed what is allowed for Y7 ratings with this show. Especially considering how the season ends with SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS A fraternal m*rder s*icide

Another criticism of Legend of Korra is that she was written to be too invulnerable... Clearly they haven't been paying attention...

She thinks she is but the show shows her over and over how dumb that is.

The thing is that Korra has mastered earth, fire, and water. She is a master in three different elements. But she struggles against a dude that can't bend. The show has a bad habit of making Korra super capable one minute, and then making her incompetent the next for the sake of plot.
@The5armdamput33 Жыл бұрын
@@Heavenly_Dragon_King Struggling against Amon doesn't make one incompetent... The Equalists are masters of their own craft (taking down benders) Underestimating nonbenders is a mistake... look at Sokka... look at Ty Lee... There's nothing plot contrived about her capabilities... she excels at her strengths and struggles with her weaknesses...
@Heavenly_Dragon_King Жыл бұрын
@@The5armdamput33 Sokka and Ty Lee are gifted fighters yes, but Ty Lee still got frozen by Katara and Sokka never won a fought against Zuko. Korra is a master at three different elements. Sometimes it feels like the show forgets that. And the equalists aren't as effective as Ty Lee either. But it's just my opinion.
@The5armdamput33 Жыл бұрын
@@Heavenly_Dragon_King Sokka may not have fought Zuko, but Zuko did draw in a 1v1 against the pirate captain... And the Equalists attack in groups... most benders will lose to them... And benders seem to be at a disadvantage in close range...

Nah, she's just really hot. Though, Asami was visually based on Lust from Fullmetal Alchemist, so technically she does indeed look like a bad guy.
