The registry is just a big old database containing settings used for the operating system (Windows) and many of it's programs. It can turn features on and off, change security rules, and even keeps track of where programs are installed.

Every user (including built-in users like Administrator and Default) has their own hive in their user path (`%userprofile%`) and the system hive is stored under the system directory. There are more hives, but those are the only ones I know where to find.

As a UNIX lover, the Windows registry kinda sucks. There are upsides to having configurations in a dedicated semi-centralized hierarchical database, but I'd rather just have plain files. The filesystem is all the hierarchical database you need. Besides, configuration files are still plentiful in Windows, so you end up having to manage two separate sources of configuration anyway.

The registry is honestly spooky. You can follow some online tutorial to change one thing and suddenly need to entirely factory reset your computer. I wanted to change the local user folder name, but it turns out that the only way to do so is by just creating a new user on your computer and transferring everything over to it. If you edit the name in the registry and in file explorer so that they match and that windows knows where to look... it doesnt matter: windows will throw a hissy fit because somebody touched his registry and blue screen constantly. I'm actually very surprised that it didn't blue screen while performing any of those actions.

About the thing I miss the least about Windows, after being mesmerized by the sheer elegance and ease of editing, backing up and restoring XML-based .plist files on my multiple Macs over the years, is the Registry. My aversion to it is so big, in fact, that if I absolutely had to use or switch to a PC, I’d much rather use Linux and have to deal with Wine instead. And, indeed, for all my distaste of Microsoft’s telemetry and AI shenanigans, if they outright got rid of it or otherwise phased it out as legacy repository of third-party application preference values (as they so often do with their Byzantine compatibility layers), I might even consider switching to a Windows PC unprompted. Yes, it’s that stupid of a technology.

Electronic of a car is the wrong way to describe register, without electronics you don't have spark in igniter, or any basic function that support a modern engine. Registry is more like the wiring of the operating system. The reason why start menu button wont work, is because the button has no wiring to connect signal to the bits of OS which would open the menu. Registry more is more like the wiring harness and fusebox of your car.

This question is unanswerable. First of all, none of us here know what your pc’s specs are, second, none of us know what OS it is running, and third, we have no clue what is on your pc. I’ll give you some very basic advice that may not be very effective but applies to most computers (some apply to macs as well): • if you have an antivirus and run windows 10 or 11, uninstall it, as Windows Defender is more than enough if you’re not an advanced user, which from your question I get you’re not. • Don’t install stuff from websites that are not trustworthy • Check if anything is tanking your resources with the task manager. If you didn’t follow the previous advice, it is possible a malware is using your computer’s resources without you knowing. • Only if your computer is not a mac or running windows 11: check if virtualisation is active via the task manager. If it is not, go in your bios to activate it. If you don’t see the option to enable virtualisation, your computer is likely too old to perform good with modern software. I could try to help you if you tell me more about your computer, but I don’t guarantee anything.

You’ll have to relearn some stuff but Linux mint is one of the easiest Linux distros to start with, and can run on basically anything (my 200 bucks compaq from 2002 runs good enough for office use with Linux Mint, when is struggled showing the file explorer on windows XP). Some stuff is Windows exclusive (like the adobe suite per example) so if there’s software you absolutely need to run then check for compatibility issues first, but all steam games can either run natively on any Linux or be run with valve’s Proton. Please put every file you want to keep on another drive before installing it though, as they’ll be lost otherwise, unless you choose to dual-boot (installing both windows and Linux side by side, which I can’t tell you how easy/hard it is since I’ve never done it).

for me, registry is far better. you have exact address for every registry on os. meanwhle text files, you need include whole address manually and even check multiple times if your input and format already correct or not. this equivalent as coding at machine level (assembly as text files) vs human level (python, java, php, etc as registry)

Its fake because if every registry was set to 0 then shell would also be 0 which would remove the explorer.exe shell and you wouldnt be able to see the desktop or taskbar. I did this prank to my teacher once where i set shell to 0 and it was very funny because she tried starting explorer.exe through task manager and it didnt fix the problem.
