It's a shame Consort never got the feel that Gael had. Gael required really good dodges sure, but his moves were able to be punished by you rather frequently. It felt like even though he's clearly the bigger and more maneuverable enemy you were still able to have a pretty much equal fight with him, with constant back and forths and only one or two combos you really needed to back off for. "Technically" you can get that feeling with Consort but that's only after learning all his exploits and dying repeatedly, which wasn't really required for Gael imo. Gael's fight, even as you're experiencing it for the first time, felt naturally smooth to learn, whereas the feel of Consort never did with the constant extra light attacks on basically every move.

Agreed. I still feel the bosses are ironically the big weak spot for ER. I mean, I love the open world, exploring, killing mobs. But the bosses put up so much pressure, with endless combos and next to no attack windows to players. Parries are next to useless, too, I only ever use them against Crucible Knights. Maybe Zamor dudes would be wise to parry, too, but ER doesn´t want you to use the Lord Gwyn strat against most bosses to give you time to do - anything. I am AWARE that this is intentional. Yeah, Miyazaki wants us to either co-op (pushing PvP on us, once again) or use Spirit Ashes. Hey, I love my ghostly little sidekicks. But I kinda preferred a boss building where YOU and your timing make room for countering the bosses flurry of attacks, not some other entity distracting them so you could ever attack. In the DLC I seriously started to exploit the iron jar aromatic and my heavy armor + colossal sword getup to just mindlessly trade into some bosses, like the holy porcupine hippo thingy. Just because those bosses tend to be such a nuisance and - I don´t even WANT to learn their timings, to be honest. Just feels like their endless combos never end. I don´t get how some people don´t want to summon, you just dodge for 2 minutes straight without attacking. That´s no fun at all. Gael on the other hand, though ? Or Watchers of the Abyss ? Now they felt fair and fun. Challenging, but with natural windows for attack for the players. I quite miss this boss design philosophy from Dark Souls and hope it returns in FromSoft´s next game. Fingers crossed. Or just give us Sekiro parries, then I don´t mind at all XD

@@murphieslaw6932 I think parrying became a way more satisfying and less cheesy playstyle in Elden Ring. For starters, it wasn't possible on most bosses in the older games. And the fact that you need multiple parries makes fights more engaging and fluid. You parry a boss, you hit them with a R1, the boss usually does an attack you can't parry, then does a parryable attack again, repeat until you get a riposte. In general I really enjoy fighting Elden Rings bosses. I think it has their best boss roster. And I'm not summoning by the way. It's just that people have misconceptions like the infinite combos thing. They are more complex and demanding sure, but that is what is so great about them. If you are having trouble with the combos, I would recommend for you to think of these bosses like this: They behave very differently based on your playstyle. Being close to a boss and rolling to their sides is when you have most windows, while rolling away is punished heavily for example. The side you choose determines the follow ups and the size of your punish windows.

I'm dreading the Consort fight. I think that's been my issue with a lot of Elden Ring bosses with some exceptions: I feel like I never truly learned most of the moves regardless of how I fought them (with or without summons). I learned Mohg's moves properly because I was only level 79 when I fought him while my left arm was broken. I could use my left hand only enough to move my character around. I'd summon the Mimic (who was not maxed out at the time), go back to the healing flask, and leave it there. No maxed out weapon or anything. Most fun I've had with an Elden Ring boss yet until I got to Bayle. Bayle was fun and reminded me of how fun dragon fights can be. That Erdtree Avatar was a pain in the ass with three phases a la Friede, but I still felt like I could learn its moves without as much bs going on. I feel like a lot of Elden Ring boss fights end up just being lessons in exploitation with weaknesses and cheese. I'll happily fight the Nameless King and Gael and so on repeatedly before I fight many of the Elden Ring bosses again.

In Elden Ring Gael's cape hit would have probably been enough to kill you instantly or take 75% of your healthbar...

One of my favorite things I noticed when fighting Gael is that his teleport is just him putting down his summon sign near you and then activating it himself. I love that detail so much. Gael and Nameless King both feel really fun and good to fight. I say that knowing I'm shit at fighting him. I'm so bad at getting the timing right with the cape and such. Nameless King was one that I really truly felt I learned. To the point that when I finally killed him right before bed one night I was almost in tears from it. As for Midir, yeah, I beat him on my first try only because I knew to stay at his head the whole time and to not summon for him. I went in embered from the Spear of the Church fight and that's the only reason I made it. I dodged that first big AoE of phase 2, but then I didn't notice him winding up the second one and it hit me full on. I should have been dead. I didn't see anything in my health bar; had to have been like single digits of health there. I healed the fastest I've ever healed in a game. I never saw much by way of the crazy lasers since I stayed close to him and would chase him down any time he ran/flew off. I'm pretty sure I never saw the super crazy laser attack in phase 2 at all thanks to staying in his face. Soul of Cinder gave me way more trouble than he should have. Goddamn lance/spear form fucked me up. One of many reasons why I hate both fighting enemies with thrusting weapons and using thrusting weapons. The magic using part I was fine with, but I hated every time he brought out the spear form. I also did not know he had a heal move. I never saw him heal in the attempts I made against him. It was funny watching other players try to parry him in phase 2 and realizing that, no, parries don't work anymore. Well done with this broken sword run. It's been a treat to watch and very entertaining. Fucking love DS3.
