I have watched many about opal hunters and miners. One thing that has continually struck me as a bit odd is why are they always showing that it is hot-- Also there are people who live underground. Why go climbing back out into the heat if you can live where it is cooler. Now, I understand having to go topside to process our mined material or to even go to another site but all else is a mystery to me And you don't have the wind blowing and worry about rain leaking in I must say that is one tough old german

@@petergoode813 cutting opal is my passion.. I'm hoping to be able to the cutting wheels.. As I've only had a couple of parcels of opal to cut so far I've been using my dremil..my family have going up to lightning ridge since my great nan first went up there prospecting on top.. My pop and my dad and uncle became obsessed with mining..i remember being down the mine around 5 yr old.. I worked up the ridge for ten yrs..my dad ended up buying a drilling rig 9inch test drill.. They found a new rush out the grawin opal field.. I haven't had a chance to go back since losing my dad a while back.. I still have a hut at the 3 mile.. Which is close to town.. If you want to find the good opal it's not in town..there is opal fields scattered in every direction and some very hard to fine.. But out on these fields is where you need to go a bit of local knowledge would help alot.. There is many crocks who will take an advantage if the chance arise.. It is like the wild west sort of once you venture away from the tourist parts in town.. Problem is the people who are on good opal don't want people to know.. But I wish you awesome luck I wish I was doing the same.. Maybe we will pass by chance someday..just keep your guard up..also unless you really know what your doing don't buy online.. The pictures can be manipulated and make the opal look much more spectacular than in real life.. My uncle has only just finished up there..my grandfather who passed last year ..he new everything there was to know about opal and lightning ridge.. A bloke named Johny Jones a big opal dealer..my pop was his boss on the riad gang and pursued him to go up for a look and he never left and made millions.. I'm not sure if his still up the ridge the last time I caught up with him he was getting on.. But maybe I could ask him for some contacts or even my uncle.. Any way the only time you want to be up the ridge is late autumn winter(perferable) and early spring.. The rest of the time it can go days Even weeks above 45 and at night 42 it's unbearable.. If you would like me to chase any of those leads up let me know..

Benjamin Gray i thank you for the info that is very help full i know what you say is true i spend some time up in white cliffs back in the 80th i put down 13 core test and so call mate got all the opal as i had spend all day repiging my clam as someone pulled out my post eny iny info you got would be great full as i won't to but at least $10,000. Worth of good rough opal so i can go back to Portland in Victoria coastal town and cut and polish which i love doing so eny info would be very much a pressurised thank you for your story i know there some bad people out there i bought some on line only $45 Worth good for the price green and red white opal i am going back one day back to them vill out north of white cliff the hold opal fields
