Opatija is a tourist centre, one of the oldest in the Mediterranean, and a climatic health resort. It is located on the northern Adriatic, about ten kilometres from the port of Rijeka and at the foot of the Učka mountain and the nature park of the same name. Due to its natural beauty and beneficial climate, in the 19th century it became a place for summer vacations and recovery for the Austro-Hungarian aristocracy and wealthy individuals of that time. Merchant and patrician I. Scarpa from Rijeka had built a luxurious villa (Villa Angiolina) with a park in 1844. The villa was often visited by numerous acquaintances of the Scarpa couple. The year of its construction is considered the beginning of tourism in Opatija. During the 1880s, several hotels were built, and in 1889, Opatija became the official health resort of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy.
