Thanks for covering this important issue, and trying to solve the plastic problem.

Tableware for parties can be replaced by paper, and other plant fibers, without even converting to cellulose like rayon. You can even use pressed banana leaves paper plates. Tableware for parties doesn't have to travel with contents. Tableware for parties can be replaced by real washable tableware. The problem is shelf packaging. A water bottle has to survive shipping, and sit on a shelf for weeks, without dissolving due to the contents of the package. Shelf packaging is what's breaking into particles in the ocean.

I know one aisle with the tape is shelves of almost nothing but plastic.

There are other videos about experiments with substitutes. Try searching YT. One is made from corn, another from cellulose, one from avocado pits.

The problem is not finding a substitute for the petroleum that goes into the plastics, it’s the petroleum industry themselves. You can come up with all kinds of alternative plastics that biodegrade beautifully, but until the petroleum industry stops ruling the western world, we’re never going to get away from the plastic problem

There should be international laws against single use plastics not made from all natural and biodegradable materials. Since yesterday...

Carbon fibers shaped into utensils, cups etc. and soaked in molten sugar which is then subjected to a high pressure might do the job.

This poses a number of problems. Using plants that are normally intended for food for something else causes huge problems, such as the spectacular rise in the price of maize after the United States decided to use it as fuel, which caused famine in Mexico. In addition, if this product dissolves in water, it feeds micro-organisms and algae, which will kill fish. Not to mention the fact that plastics are a by-product of the fuel industry. If petroleum-based fuels continue to be produced, what will happen to the hydrocarbons that cannot be converted easily into fuel?

Could you use high fructose corn syrup? Maybe companies would stop putting it into our foods.

They're using a food-grade biodegradable coating that makes it waterproof plenty long enough to use (even a few times)

@@jesburns3605 Can it be used as containers?
@jesburns36054 күн бұрын
@@zyxw2000 Based on what I saw in the lab and what the scientists explained about the performance of the material - yes. For dry goods, it would hold up pretty well (unless the coating was compromised) Though to be fair - their goal is creating a material engineered for single- or very limited use. They want it to break down if it gets littered. Or be recycled (dissolved) once it's been used to b reformed into another product.

The answer is NO! We would have to convert too much agricultural land to produce enough to replace all the plastic we use.
@DiakosDelvin6 күн бұрын
Algae, kelp and seaweed are every bit as good at producing sugar as land-based plants are.
@user-245er4ud5 күн бұрын
Seems like a great idea, except... Someone is already doing this and not with a horrible substance to consume like sugar. There is Lentil made single use table wear already being produced at scale. The spoons and forks don't just break down they are even edible, taste good and ARE HEALTHY FOR YOU. People are eating WAY too much sugar as it is. We shouldn't be adding more of that on our plate, that's kind of how the plastic problem started as well, lmao.

Never going to replace plastic. Goodluck with underwriters and insurance companies. lol Plastic isnt the problem. Emissions are the problem, not straws up turtles noses.
