Open all hours had a weird time-span. The pilot aired in 1973, the first series didn't come along until 1976. The second series came along in 1981, and the fourth series had to wait until 1985.

Explains why they looked older each time. Especially Gladys, the nurse.. she looked like the mother in later episodes for the young nurse appeared in earlier ones. ☺️ May they rest in peace. 💐

You live around the corner from 'we are' it is filmed? Is there a school in the neighbourhood by any chance?

I thought he did it pretty well. He's cute enough to make it plausible (almost).

At 2:47 Granvile looks like Colin Firth

He played a good role, but he didn't look a day under 40.

This is a good reflection of post war England albeit, funnier
@ffcbulldog666 Absolutely mate. Strange that a cockney kid would be knocking around oop North though.

Is Granvile supposed to be in his 20's? He was born in 1940. He was over 40 here, and looked even older. It was absurd casting if he was supposed to be in his 20's.

Yeah, but I think it makes it funnier when they keep talking about him like he is an adolescent

@@victoriousrufus6747 Don't be an idiot. Someone can ask a question without being told by a raving fanatic that they 'don't like it' and thus shouldn't watch it. Bear in mind that just because you are a total, brainless fan of something, that does not mean that someone coming to an old series for the first time does not have trouble suspending disbelief. People who like a show that they saw in their youth may just accept it because when they were a child they had no critical faculties and didn't question anything. Also, in the days when these were made, British television was extremely low-budget and production values were quite poor. So a modern viewer, coming to this for the first time is going to be quite confused as to why a man who looks to be in his seventies is treating a man who is in his forties as though the middle-aged man was twenty. Not to mention that the elderly man is apparently dating a woman who is closer in age to Granville than to the elderly man. Why a woman Gladys's age would want anything to do with an old fart like Arkwright really stretches belief. One wonders how the original audiences just fell for it without any questions. No doubt the actors were very famous and people would have accepted them in anything - especially given the poor general quality of BBC television in those days.

I don't understand why nurse Gladys, who seems to be the same age as Granville, is dating someone who looks like he's in his 70s.
