I think the lotus eaters didn't think the cave was harmful either not just because they were chill but the cyclopses didn't mind their existence and probably let them come and go. If you remember the next song, polyphemus isn't mad because they trespassed but instead because they killed his sheep and planned to steal. Had odysseus been chill like the lotus eaters, polyphemus might've let them trade or bargain for some food

This also kinda leads into the Odysseys overall theme of "Hospitality" manners. In this version, yea it is entirely bc they had bad manners. In greek Hospitality rules your ment to greet a host and the Host HAS to feed and be kind to you. But if your rude the host literally gets to kill you. Heck, he even spared the cyclopes' life.
