amzn.to/3aXVYm7 For upright playing you can't do better than this model or price at $184.99
I made these videos as a basic course on playing blues in open D. Open D is a fun and easy tuning to play and compose in. Once you learn the basics you can improvise endlessly in it. You don't have to play slide in open D. A lot of blues as well as folk artists have used this tuning to great effect.
I first started in this tuning 20 years ago. I really wish I would have had someone to show me some of the basics to begin with. These licks and chords in open D are just things I picked up here and there over a number of years. You can tune any guitar to open D. Have fun! You can check out the second video here • Open D Chords and Lick...
If you think tabs will help I have some on my blog at myfreebluesguit...

It took me well over five years to get anywhere near ok at slide. I would have a little go every day after my practice. I eventually found a friend that played slide well. He showed me what he did. I have got to the point where I can jam with it. Well worth learning. I love the sound and being able to make it myself. Your videos are up there with the best on KZbin.

Marvelous, best 38 minutes spent on KZbin yet. Just found your video and may I say awesome job. As a blues fan I just started using this tuning and it is so much easier getting that raw Delta Blues sound. Even though I don't have a Resonator yet, my acoustic sounds fantastic in this tuning. I really like how you combined a compilation of licks. Again Sir, Awesome.

Grossman I've heard of, and I think he has a channel here, I think I watched a guy named Ernie Hawkins there. I've seen Ernies videos elsewhere, but he did standard tuning blues stuff. Most people do. Open tunings are so wide open and yet people will teach just a song in the tuning. I like people to learn to improvise in the tuning as well. I never had anyone to teach me so I was always wandering around in open tunings. That's kind of the way I teach them :)

I picked up a pyle resonator off of Amazon for under 2 bills. Not a life long friend but great sound, once i get a little better, i may move up a model or two, but it is killer to play.. way better slide sound then my Gretsch. That "hub cap" adds a lot.

A handy tip for developing your slide ear. Take some tunes that you know by heart. "Happy Birthday" , "Amazing Grace", or something else and figure them out just on the high string. Once you have the tune confidently under you slide, play it without looking at your left hand. You will immediately know when you dork a note. Correct it without looking. I still use this method when learning new lead lines by ear. I figure them out on one string then once I am sure of the notes I move across the fretboard. Hope that makes sense.

You are awesome man!! Great teacher..I spent a year learning standard tuning and then met Don Young and Marc Schoenberger. I know own amd play 20s and 30s Nationals..Your lessons are So easy to follow..You are easy to listen to Over and Over..I come back over and over to pick up and perfect each little piece. Keep up the good work man!!!! I am 2 weeks into learning, while in school full time, and also working 45 hours a week. But I am getting to the point that music heals my soul while I'm at work and instead of going on a "BREAK", I spend my time at the guitar store; JAMMING and playing on other more expensive guitars that I can't afford! I am really trying to teach myself musical theory, and also learn how to master OPEN D, and even OPEN E, though similar, they both have such unique tones! Glad I stumbled my way into a Guitar Center so I could kick off this incredible journey I have been on! Funny I own 3 guitars by Taylor, and my name is Taylor, maybe it was destiny!!!! HAHAHAHA
