Morning Charlie, if I had a hat on I'd take it off to you. That is a brilliant, strong, neat piece of building. At long last my brain can now see, imagine, what you're doing. How the station will come into it and how the trains appear from the helix. Very well worked out. Good luck with keeping that amount of track clean. But I'm sure you've taken that onto account. Charlie the whole area is going to look fantastic and what great photo opportunity you'll have very soon. And the running sessions you'll have will be fantastic. Keeping track of a all the trains will be marvellous to see. Good for you. Bet you can't wait to get back to running trains! I hope you can continue with your supply of materials in this new lockdown. Charlie you and your family stay safe, I'm looking forward to the next one Eddy xx

Another enjoyable and informative video. Especially like the way you show that you don’t need to be an expert joiner to build such good baseboards. It’s worth noting, when buying plywood from B&Q, and other suppliers, they offer a free cutting service, so you can just the board you need, and get them to cut it to suit, including all your strips in one go, saving you time, money and effort. x The Bigfella x

Charlie, as far as I'm concerned I could watch you screw every screw so to say you won't bore us with every detail I think you are wrong. It all adds to the learning curve and ideas of how things can be done. So don't skimp on filming on how and what you are doing. This is facinating watching it all come together. I must admit though that the maths are a little bit beyond me. Keep the vids coming. Also, just a thought if you haven't already done so, the horizontal pieces of the "T" should be tapered to support the board. Regards, Terry
@ChadwickModelRailway
@ChadwickModelRailway 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Terry, I'm so pleased that you enjoy the videos. When you say tapered, do you mean the top angle of the "T" piece? Regards Charlie
@nickcoles518
@nickcoles518 3 жыл бұрын
@@ChadwickModelRailway I had the same thought - while you are dropping the height of each T, the top of those T's is flat. So when/if you come to screw the track bed to the top of them the track bed (with the thinner ply) may have an odd profile. I.E. You will get slope - flat section - slope - flat section - slope etc

@@ChadwickModelRailway Hello Charlie, that is how I am reading this comment. However, instead of tapering the top of the ‘tee’, it may be possible to assemble the ‘tee’ with 1no screw and wood adhesive. My thought is you would be able to place the baseboard on the ‘tee’s and the angle of the top of the ‘tee’ could be adjusted to follow the underneath of the baseboards. My regards, David.

For what it's worth my entire layout is of open baseboard design made of that 9mm ply from B&Q. Similarly, I went for a brace every foot. It's held up pretty well in the 12 months that it's been together - only aprox a half mm sag at most of the track bed between braces. All the best, Jon M.

Very interesting. I had something similar on my mind where i would fix the first support each end as transition into the gradient allowing the ply trackbed to flex to adapt to the gradient then fix supports to hold in final possition, a simiar way you can use a long thin strip of wood to help possition flexible track icluding transition curves. Some day i'll actually get to build my own layout with thanks to you I have more ideas rolling round my head. Hello Charlie. Interesting and well presented video as always. On our club layout we have a fiddle yard below accessed via long inclines at 1 in 60 (avoiding the drag of curves on a helix) and even that is a challenge for some locos with long trains. Steep pulls lead to slow running and you can end up with trains spending much more time running hidden than they are on the scenic section. We seem to spend quite a bit of time peering underneath to check what’s going on and to sort out running issues. I know you are using magnetism for enhanced adhesion, but I would think very carefully before committing to such a steep incline.

Thanks, Charlie, for the helpfull idea with the T-timber. T Think of using upsidedown U-timbers to get an alinement for a reaining plywood layer for the retaining wall. If you do your retaining wall as a big piece of stones perchance you would like to make it more interesting by using a SCALE CAST. mould. So you cast your walls and stanchions from gipsym and primer and paint it. It is a bit more work to be done but by painting the stones individually you can overtake your viaduct and get a step further in realism. Due to your intrest innsound reduction cramped silkpaper (used for securing pottery on transport) maybe a good and cheap matetial. glued under the plywood bars with the track from below using hotglue. I do stop every friday for your progress till nearly a year and be so gratefull for your service you do to all of us. If anybody tells me "Do not know hot to beat my time to death - lockdown is sooo boring." I do send them to your channel... 😊 Best wishes to you from Berlin, Chris

As ever a fascinating video. Glad to see you adopting the "shamelessly steal good ideas" principle. The McKinley green ropes translated into white for Chadwick. That will help identify where you can get more than one train into the storage yard ways. I'm sure you will continue the powerbase into this slope as it will be needed at least until the whole train is out of the helix

@@ChadwickModelRailway Yes - the McKinley Railway is a fascinating story. Such a shame that there haven't been any videos for quite a while - but with the lockdown situation it's obvious that you can't go and visit and their team are probably unable to meet to work on the layout anyway. Something else to look forward to getting back to normal. Back to this video - I do find it amusing that you use good old Imperial feet and inches for all the horizontal measurements and metric mm (or cm) for vertical.

Charlie, I really impressed with the progress you are making. Like some other comments below, I think you will end up having to add a layer to the helix, but if you rotate the existing helix 120 degrees so that the 120 degree extended entry at the bottom is level, it might save a lot of adjusting of the existing gradient and get you the right height overall. Regards Andrew

Hi Charlie. Barrie Davies recommends you make sure the 'D' in the tension lock couplingis smooth and has no rough spots as this should stop carriages derailing when being pushed back by the loco. Nice hints about the open frame and risers. Will look to see if I can incorporate them into an under baseboard storage sidings! Someone answer the telephone!

Good work Charlie. My one small concern while watching this, is that it sounds like you'll suddenly go from the flat viaduct board... to the angled new board... but doesn't have a gradual change of angle. If that is the case, then you could end up with the knuckles of your Kadee coming undone. Perhaps the first 'T' support after the board joing should be a touch higher to create that gradual angle shift? Cheers Laura
@ChadwickModelRailway

A very good point Laura. However I think adding the extra level to the Helix is inevitable which will in reduce the angle of the approach track. hopefully that will remove any hump. Regards Charlie

My gosh Charlie that line into the helix looks like a ski slope!! I would strongly advocate for adding another loop to the helix lowering the clearance between each loop to the absolute minimum. If one has to choose between two conflicting criteria, to me, reliable operation on the mainline is paramount. Then deal with the resultant increase in the grade into the station. Scenically it would be easier to "sell" a short steep approach into a station than an overtly unrealistic length of steep mainline.

I’m with you on this one mate, I think you’re pushing on an open door. But it’s worth checking it out to see what is viable. Regards Charlie

@@ChadwickModelRailway It would be nice to keep enough gradient to make it 𝑙𝑜𝑜𝑘 like the main-line is climbing a bank. I would have to agree though, that does look a wee bit steep, even for BR(W). If you ease the gradient using the helix, the climb to Barnstaple may help to give more of an illusion of the main-line climbing too, in the opposite direction. Coupled with whatever actual slope remains in the main-line, it should still look pretty impressive. Something that occurred to me: the junction at the top of the hill might look more impressive if you can use some fancy, very gentle pointwork, giving a really realistic profile to the flow of your lines. I know someone makes "𝑒𝑥𝑝𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑠" points - Peco? As an important feature on the layout, that might help avoid the slightly unrealistic junctions we see all too often , on 𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓 layouts of course.😁 Please don't skimp on filming the construction of the open-frame scenery. You won't "bore us"; this is something that isn't often covered. Happy New Year Charlie. I wonder what Chadwick will look like this time 𝒏𝒆𝒙𝒕 year.

Charlie, fantastic...watched this about four hours ago, and been thinking on your design, think two things, 1, I would probably adjust the helix... yeh I know but whenever I arrive at solutions for a problem, and opt for what I believe to be the easier... invariably I end up bitting the bullet and resolving the problem the harder way... sometimes I do the hard way first and wish I’d done it the easy way.. but not often. 2. Charlie, the support ‘T’ braces if you used two pieces of timber either side of the vertical, you could make the long top edge follow the line of the slope, providing 150mm (length of top of T) of support instead of just the corner of the timber, just an idea... very best wishes.
@ChadwickModelRailway
@ChadwickModelRailway 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Vic, I’m sure that you’re right regarding adding an extra layer to the Helix and I will explore that as the build progresses. I’m a little confused on your second point, what I thought of doing was adding a longitudinal strip on the T piece to support the track bed along its length. Is that what you mean? Regards Charlie
@vicf5726
@vicf5726 3 жыл бұрын
@@ChadwickModelRailway Hi Charlie, nearly, rather than your T pieces going from front to back, at right angles to the upright. Set the top part of the T at the angle of the slope, attached to the upright, you would need two pieces, front and back of the upright and parallel to each other, if this doesn’t make sense I’ll send a photo. Keep doing what your doing sir genius channel!

Hi Charlie, just a thought... Next time you build an incline like this, figure out the exact start and end point. Then put a long enough level on it, or a plank which you trust to be straight. Now you can screw all the other support structures in place without measuring each single one. If they all just touch the level you have a perfectly straight incline.
@ChadwickModelRailway
@ChadwickModelRailway 3 жыл бұрын
That is something that’s occurred to me. I shall have to bolt together a couple of plywood strips and then check the incline angle. Regards Charlie

Hi Charlie. Will you need to put the magnet system on the connecting up line in this new section or is the slope enough so you don't need to use them? I think as far as couplings are concerned, the versatility of the magnet system looks a good solution when going down hill although it will cost. The alternative would be to have fixed connections of 2-3 coaches with magnet couplings between them.
@ChadwickModelRailway
@ChadwickModelRailway 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Dan, yes I will have the power base on the run up from the Helix to the viaduct. Regarding the couplings, yes I have considered that I would have a magnet every other coach and use the fixed hose couplings in between. Regards Charlie
