Very interesting. I worked for Diebold in the early 80's as an electronic tech working on ATMs and drive up banking equipment, but part of our training was lock picking and how to defeat certain mechanical dial locks, ie, teller drawers and such. The safes, from floor safes to bank vaults, on the other hand, if the customer was locked out, the method of opening the safe was a long and tedious process of drilling out an access hole to get at the locking mechanism. I remember a "lock-out" on a Diebold floor safe at a local A.B.C. store (manager was the only one to know the combination - dumb move - was shot and killed) that took about 3 hours to finally open. The time consuming part was drilling through about 4 layers of case-hardened steel and cement, and took out about half a dozen high dollar drill bits. I'm not sure what type of cement it was but it was harder on the bits than the steel. What are your thoughts on Diebold safes?

That's a cool trick! Probably useful to know when the batteries die. The important information is that it is a fire safe -- it will protect the contents for some period of time if the room is on fire. People are creative and no safe will keep people out forever. The object is to keep people out long enough. That safe is fine if you want to protect your will, powers of attorney, deeds, computer backups, and other things that are a pain to replace and easily damaged by fire. Expensive jewels and loads of cash are better kept in a safe deposit box at the bank. By the way, at the hotel, someone on staff knows how to open the room safe.

If your safe has a S&G 6150 or similar, the lock itself is pretty much impermeable to magnets. Your biggest threat is somebody never resetting the MASTER (not USER) code so the user code can then be bypassed using the factory master code default. Details of this can be found in 6150 manual. But neverthelss SOME body found out how to open it when i was gone, came back and somebody had put a bullet in the chamber of my AK, dropped the hammer then put it all back together. Its impossible to do that by accident, meaning they wanted to show me they could break into the safe anytime. But my maintenance people of the apt. were all our friends from south of the border, all of whom teach each other to pick locks by age 4 just for a hobby, so i took that into account. When you rent an apt, this always happened and no exceptions, be 100% certain that maint. people WILL enter your premises when you're gone, for no legitimate reason whatsoever just to poke around your shit, and some will even have the gall to leave "CLUES" just to show you they can come in anytime! Robert Maybeth....I know your reply has been sitting here awhile but I have let folks know that you dropped some serious truth here. A lot of our friends south of the border has acquired special talents while attempting to go back and forth. I too lived in a complex where by day most of these fine people were great people to know...but by night some of them would be host to friends that seem to come out of the wood work. Don’t get me wrong, the majority of the long term residents were hard working people but it was their guest who were transients that caused the most problems....most of the times it was the younger ones. Also, where I lived it was the maintenance crew who would wait and get into stuff when everything became quiet. They cleaned me out, watched tv and prepared lunch while I was away. They even got upset when I changed my locks and stopped buying their favorite foods. I love my brown and black brothers but I had to saddle up and get the Puck outta dodge. This is an ongoing problem and it doesn’t matter where you live...someone is always planning on camping out and enjoying stuff on your dime....and by the way that dime has to be adjusted for inflation 😲☝🏼

KALEL KALEL mechanical with a key or combination can't be opened with a magnet. Basically the magnet is effecting a solenoid on the inside which is basically a switch that flips by electromagnetic current. The rare earth magnet has a strong enough force to pull the switch closed without the electrical signal. This would essentially work on any solenoid. There are tons of solenoids in your car and other everyday things

My friend had the exact same looking safe, and we ended up getting in with what we thought was a different way. But now I'm wondering if what he said about shaking it is what we actually accomplished. It was about 5 years ago so was likely the old version he was referring too. Maybe it designed as an anti-theft method? A thief carrying away the safe might accidentally unlock it and dump all the contents on your floor!

Quality has really gone down. Worked for Sentry briefly in the mid-90's in their sales dept. One day we brought up a safe from the manufacturing floor - similar to this one - but was bolted on both sides of the door and had a regular dial combination lock to it. Next to it - we brought in a similar competitor's safe. Laid it on it's back and with a couple whacks with a sledge hammer to the face of the competitor's safe - the door opened. Did the same to our Sentry safe and no matter how hard we tried beating the shit out of this poor safe with a 10 lb sledge hammer - we couldn't open it. In it's defense - this particular safe is really more of a convenience item to keep things from growing feet and walking away by less sophisticated thieves, but it's primary purpose is to provide protection of its contents from fires.

@B. Rippy It ain't going nowhere. I doubt any home burglars for a snatch and grab will be carrying a circular saw with them. Pry bar I'm sure they would have. It is in a corner of a closet so there is only two sides open to be able to cut and when they try to pry up the two sides they may have cut, the top of the safe will hit the wall and prevent any movement. I'm confident they won't get the safe. Thanks for the idea just the same.

+Benargee-I think Mr. Lock's point was that millions of these Sentry safes are sold with the pretense that people are providing excellent security for their belongings when it is indeed not true. I think he is trying to let people know that if you're going to buy a safe, take the recommendation from someone like him instead of advertisement material from a safe company. I think he is also demonstrating the difference between a $250 safe and a $1000 safe...sometimes you get what you pay for. Also, he pointed out another critical flaw with this new "improved" safe in that it does not have a redundant interior hinge like the old version has. So, if you could pop the hinge pin out, you could open it that way, too. So he keyed in on two vulnerabilities in this video.

My cousin had an old safe from her grandfathers business. She had it in her house as a memento in her living room. Had a really nice old fashion paint job with the company name and other graphic's. Her house was broken into and they tried cutting the hinges and drilling it with tools from her garage. Totally ruined the safe. The bad part is she never locked it and nothing was kept in it. She figured no one would damage it if it was open and empty. They must have spun the tumbler before they tried the handle is all I can think of for why it was damaged. If you have one of these old iron safes put a note on it that it is open. Yes there are people that stupid in the world.

Don’t just rely on the safe’s lock. You can add multiple barrier locks that prevent the door from opening whether it’s locked or not and a host of other puzzle-like peripheral barriers that will deter a thief of opportunity and at least buy you some time and slow down a really good thief. Apply the mindset of making it difficult for even YOU to open your safe when you need to. Make it an unattractive target. If it’s easy for you, it’s a piece of cake and a matter of seconds for a thief.

Having said that, I'm not 100% sure it would survive a fire, though. I'm sure it will survive *some* fires, at least, so it's probably better than nothing, and it's easier to find our documents when we need them, too.
